Girl dies from meth poisoning after drinking from her mom's bong

A 5-year-old Colorado girl died from acute meth poisoning after drinking from her mother’s bong, getting left for three hours without medical help — despite “seeing monsters and demons,” according to court records.

Sophia Larson drank the tainted water from the bong her mom Stephanie Alvarado, 26, had been using during a drug bender with two cousins after losing her job because of a failed drug test, according to the arrest affidavit obtained by The Mercury News.

Bong water is pretty nasty stuff but I've never heard of adding meth to it. Poor little girl - 3 hours before help was called. They should all rot in prison for life.

They likely did not add it to the water. They likely used the bong to smoke it, which is stupid because it's water-soluble. Tragically, this didn't merely result in them wasting their drugs.
 
Not sure one, especially a child, could drink enough bong water to get poisoned.
 
To think this death could have been prevented had the parents reacted appropriately. There's more going on here than just drugs.

This is a good example why some people should never be parents.

Sounds like her mom was a meth head, not sure you can count on meth heads reacting appropriately.

Hopefully she ends up in jail for a good, long time.

Yep, but drug possession/abuse is a non-violent crime. Of course, if drug possession was not a crime then medical help may well have been sought in time to do some good.

Seriously though meth is a great destroyer of lives. It's sad the epidemic has come to this. I've seen people on it, even in my cosseted neighbourhood, and they give me the creeps. They do not look in control of their lives at all.

Methampheamine hydrochloride is water soluble but crystal meth (free base) is a water-insoluble but volatile oil: Methamphetamine base is a colourless volatile oil insoluble in water. The most common salt is the hydrochloride (CAS-51-57-0), which occurs as a white or off-white powder or as crystals soluble in water.

Some of the free base would remain in the glass bowl of the bong, where the little girl got it.

How would a five year old know there was water in the bong, and even think of drinking it? I wonder if she were taught to drink from a bong, or if an adult helped her drink it.

Your link said she drank some of the water, then this happened. I took from that it was in solution. aka, HCL form. Also, your link said "white powder"... not in "rock"/crystal form

If they smoked base form in the bong, it wouldn't go into solution as you note, so drinking bong water wouldn't hurt her. They'd have had to deliberately grind it up and put it in the water, which would be pointless because, not being in solution, it couldn't possibly go into any vapor (not that it would. Some apparently add alcohol to bongs because the alcohol evaporates as the air is drawn through. No reason to think that would happen with ground-up base form sitting at the bottom)

Smoking crystal meth in a bong will build up quantities of water-insoluble methamphetamine free base in the bong water. Drinking this mixture converts the crystal meth into the water-soluble hydrochloride salt in the stomach where there is free HCl

The free base pot reacts with the hydrochloric acid in the stomach to give water soluble meth HCl.
