I haven't been to Italy but in my experience traveling to Europe MJ & N African hashish are pretty commonly available there, & cheap. This type of grow op seems to be uncommon.

My sister looked at this house one time that had a hidden grow room in it. She didn't realize what it was until she described it to me complete with the "And an odd smell I can't quite describe"

There are only 2 genera in the plant family Cannabinaceae: Cannabis (hemp, MJ) & Humulus (hops). Every notice the familiarity in smell between pot & some beers, lagers of which are brewed using hops. Both contain phenolic compounds, a group of chemicals with a similar & powerful odor.

I thought I caught the square footage of the grow room as 5400 sq.ft. I would love to see the blueprints for that size room behind a walk in shower......

There is some serious engineering involved in a grow op that size. Air circulation, odor control, humidity control, lighting, water, fertilizer. Hiding the huge electricity bill is another big problem.

I have a 14 kW propane-fueled Kohler genset & a big basement but odor control would be a big problem as the houses around me are too cxlose together. The authorities monitor high electric bills but not high propane usage. But someone is bound to notice the propane delivery truck pulling up every other week & the genset running 18 hours a day. Plus I'd be paranoid that the electrician I would need to rewiire the basement to handle all the lights, fans & dehumidifiers.
