THC found in Wisconsin vaping cases that led to illnesses

It's still unclear what's causing the spate of illnesses across the country.

Nearly nine out of 10 cases where vaping led to people developing a severe lung disease in Wisconsin involved the use of THC products, such as waxes or oils, Wisconsin’s Department of Health Services said Thursday.

Health officials said that 89 percent of the 27 people they interviewed who became sick reported using e-cigarettes or other vaping devices to inhale THC, the psychoactive compound in marijuana.

The public health people seems to be blaming components of the vaped material, such as flavorings, for most of the problems. Things like menthol might be a lot worse for your lungs than THC.

The way threads like this are presented is a bit odd. Let's get something clear: the THC itself is not causing the illness.

It's something about the delivery system (for example, perhaps people cough into it and a bacterial culture grows, or some contaminant a certain system shipped with), or specific contaminated oil products. It's also happening in nicotine vaping products. The OP focuses solely on Wisconsin, but nationally it's not 90% THC oil products causing this.

If I ever go for any THC products, I think I'll go for the tinctures added to tea, or under the tongue. Since it happening with nicotine vaping products, I bet your 'coughing and bacteria culture grows ' is the a good likely hood of being the cause.

THC was only implicated because it was in the mixture being vaped. Most authorities hold that THC itself is relatively harmless in the physical harm area.

I'm a big fan of the tinctures they sell in the store I've been to in MA.

One is THC in alcohol base, the other is a full-spectrum indica (the same store has hybrid and sativa as well), and then I have this half-CBD/half-THC cooking oil

I will also point out that THC was not involved in all the cases. Some were nicotine related.

Contaminant it may be, at least in part (vitamin E acetate; harmless to eat or rub on skin, apparently not so great to inhale):

But, "The FDA also told state officials Wednesday that its lab tests found nothing unusual in nicotine products that had been collected from sick patients, according to another person who took part in the call." The THC-containing products are the only ones thus far that had vitamin E acetate; it is not clear at all whether these are only street-bought (aka, unregulated manufacture) rather than store-bought. There's more than one thing going on here.
