China Cashes in on the Cannabis Boom - The New York Times

SHANCHONG, China — China has made your iPhone, your Nikes and, chances are, the lights on your Christmas tree. Now, it wants to grow your cannabis.

Two of China’s 34 regions are quietly leading a boom in cultivating cannabis to produce cannabidiol, or CBD, the nonintoxicating compound that has become a consumer health and beauty craze in the United States and beyond.

Sounds like a move any good capitalist would do. If they sell it legally what problem could there be. Probably a lot cheaper to produce than Canada.

I'm still confused as to why hemp plants were ever made illegal, as I understand it they don't have much of the compounds that are used for recreation.

William Randolph Hearst owned large tracts of trees in the Pacific Northwest that were slated to be converted into news print for his papers. When hemp was found to produce a better quality paper, he used his newspapers & political influence to get hemp banned. I heard that it was legally grown during WWII to make fibers for rope for our Navy.

There is the inevitable debate & the usual conspiracy theory skeptics about this story. Here's one version: Meet the Man Responsible for Marijuana Prohibition - MassRoots

The drug prohibition is founded upon ignorance and deception. Do not expect to see rational policy result from ignorance and deception.
