Smoking strong pot daily raises psychosis risk, study finds

LONDON (AP) — Smoking high-potency marijuana every day could increase the chances of developing psychosis by nearly five times, according to the biggest-ever study to examine the impact of pot on psychotic disorder rates.

The research adds to previous studies that have found links between marijuana and mental health problems, but still does not definitively pinpoint marijuana as the cause.

I can personally attest to the fact that smoking strong pot daily does unpleasant things to your head.

Makes sense. Some stains can make some people paranoid. I don't use cannabis much, and I stay away from strains that make me feel bad in any way.

People prone to paranoid schizophrenia probably wouldn't enjoy weed anyway.

The title says it "raises psychosis risk" but according to the article, it does not establish marijuana as the cause. That makes the title extremely misleading.

It literally is quoted up there that the study "does not definitively pinpoint marijuana as the cause", and if marijuana didn't cause disorders involving psychosis, then marijuana did not "raise[] psychosis risk."

They only mean that there is a correlation. This should not be surprising as mentally ill persons in general, especially schizophrenics, self-medicate with drugs at a higher rate than most people.

Righto.
Which came first- the psychosis or the weed?

The voices in my head disagree.

;)

It isn’t going to make a perfectly sane person crazy but I could definitely see how if you are someone who is right on the border of having a psychosis that mind altering substances could push you those extra inches over the edge.

Besides, daily heavy use takes all the fun out of it. :)

Smoking high-potency marijuana every day could increase the chances of developing psychosis .

We needed a study to determine this?

You should have just told them, JacksinPA.

It's truly wonderful that recreational smokers are no longer thrown into prison. (I think that Texas used to hand out very long sentences.)

But there should be an educational campaign to urge young (and old) recreational smokers to seriously consider whether they are hurting their health in the long run.

An educational campaign has succeeded in reducing tobacco use.

Hopefully, the government will start a non-punitive campaign to convince people to find other potentially less damaging pleasure.
