WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Cory Booker has reintroduced his U.S. Senate bill to legalize marijuana at the federal level. Beto O’Rourke called for expunging the records of those arrested for possession of the drug. Kamala Harris admitted she had smoked pot - and inhaled.

When it comes to legalizing marijuana, many of the current and potential 2020 Democratic presidential contenders are eager to show they are cool with cannabis.

This might be a smart strategy with the changing age demographics in the U.S. And it's a policy the Repubs would be uniformly against.

If I am a young person, do I want to start breaking the law?

But this is just an excuse, I know not to smoke tobacco, so if I want to stay away from it, I don't need it to be illegal, I will have plenty examples of poor people.

What does breaking the law have to do with it?

Americans have been scofflaws forever.

The law will be respected when it is respectable. Many laws are not respectable, and therefore are not respected by the masses. Perjury is practiced in Congress on a regular basis. The law has become a joke.

Yes, this was my philosophy; the illegal drug war, the illegal drug laws and I lived my whole life as a criminal and poor person.

Laws are there for your protection.

Makes no difference if your neighbor is a criminal, you don't be a criminal.

Still, medicinal use and those for whom it is fit are not provided for, so the people do have a grievance.

Ideologically do we want to exterminate a species?

Do we want to preclude the good joint that makes one appreciate creation?

No.
 
I agree that it should be made legal federally. It will probably take fifty years for some of the backwards states to legalize otherwise.
 
Legalizing it, or at least leaving it up to the states, is something the majority of people in BOTH parties want. But there has been a lot of money fighting against its legalization because it would cut a bit into the profits of some other industries. But I think we are at a tipping point. I am pretty sure it will at least be removed from the schedule 1 list with the next Democratic president.
