Coca-Cola is best known for its eponymous caffeine-based drink, but the firm now appears to be experimenting with a different drug: cannabis.

According to Canada's BNN Bloomberg, the drinks giant is in talks with local producer Aurora Cannabis about developing marijuana-infused beverages.

These would not aim to intoxicate consumers but to relieve pain.

I believe there are hundreds of trademarks already registered for pot-based products. Where Coke treds Pepsi won't be far behind.

Interesting, however they really couldn't cash in on the endeavor with current federal laws the way they are. Even with states that have legal marijuana, Coke would have to produce in each of those states and only distribute in those states because shipping it (even to other states that have it legal) would be committing a felony.

I’m waiting for Coca-Cola to bring back cocaine; from Wikipedia:

Pemberton called for five ounces of coca leaf per gallon of syrup (roughly 37 g/L), a significant dose; in 1891, Candler claimed his formula (altered extensively from Pemberton's original) contained only a tenth of this amount. Coca-Cola once contained an estimated nine milligrams of cocaine per glass. (For comparison, a typical dose or "line" of cocaine is 50–75 mg.[64]) In 1903, it was removed.[65]

I would prefer they have an option for real cane sugar instead of corn syrup first.

I am not surprised in the least. Coca Cola used to have a bit cocaine in it. I wish it still did.

They could start in Canada, I guess.

I know one coke drinker who would be happy.

Test markets in places like Zimbwawe.

Coke has legions of lawyers looking at all aspects of this. They are a major political contributor & can get what they want.

Cannabis Could Be As Large As Soft Drinks Industry, Says Analyst

The cannabis industry has enormous room for growth.

The cannabis industry has only just started to take off and investors could still expect to make a lot of money in the space, this according to Nick Giambruno, chief analyst at The Casey Report.

"This is a real industry that is emerging after 80 years of insane prohibition. When you consider the recreational, the medicinal, and the industrial uses of cannabis, this is going to be an enormous industry, it could be as large as the soft drinks industry," Giambruno told Kitco News.

Giambruno noted that there are many cannabis stocks on the market, most of which are "junk," and that investors should find companies that really distinguish themselves, like those involved in the cannabis oil sub-sector.

Real money people have looked at this market & see $$$.

Not sure they could even do that with current laws for entering and leaving the US since they are a US based business.

They have a subsidiary, Coca-Cola Canada. It is not like they would be bringing it over the border, they are doing something completely legal in another country.

It is for the Canadian market, where weed will become legal next month.

I'm talking about them being a US based company there might be US laws that prevent them from engaging in that.

Let's end the drug war so we can put coke, back in coca-cola!

The headline is a bit misleading. Coca Cola looks interested in infusing drinks with CBD oil, which is legal in the vast majority or all states, and isn't regulated as a controlled substance by the feds. It can be made from hemp or cannabis, but has no intoxicating properties - it's meant as an anti-inflammatory. I talked with a guy with several 'vape' shops and apparently some states require that sellers certify it's made from hemp, but there is no way to test that assertion - it's the same oil whether made from pot or hemp. Pot isn't legal in Tennessee but CBD oil is sold in vape shops and health shops all around here, and apparently can be vaped or ingested orally or through the skin as lotion or oil.

I've been thinking about trying it for arthritis, although the evidence isn't there to support it as effective except anecdotal.... One of those 'can't hurt' things. I've seen no bad side effects attributed to CBD oil.

It will show as a positive on drug tests for pot, so those tested at work can't use it, or at least need to make sure with their employer before using it. Thousands of workers in Oak Ridge (Y-12, and other nuclear energy/weapons contractors) are subject to random drug tests and the advice is for them to avoid at all costs because it could cost them their jobs... My employer, me, doesn't care. :peace

That's not a sure thing because CBD oil can and is made from hemp, and also from pot, and legal in lots of states like Tennessee and Alabama where pot is not legal in any form. There are companies that ship it around the country now. What I've heard from CBD oil retailers is DEA and the rest aren't paying attention to it because it's not intoxicating in any way. I'm thinking if Coca Cola gets in on the action, they won't have any problem getting it cleared with the Feds if that's what makes them money. It should be legal so that's a good thing, and would clarify the rules for the little guys selling it now.

Yes, back in the days of corporations with conscience, Coca Cola voluntarily removed the cocaine before the Harrison Act went into effect.

Another product containing cocaine was Vin Mariani, with rave reviews from the sitting Pope. Not sure if it was voluntarily removed, or if it fell victim to the Harrison Act in 1914.

I have tried CBD oil for aches and pains of arthritis an old age; not favorably impressed...

Sounds like rubbish to me. The article quotes a source saying it'd be in the "recover drink" category which is code for being able to put something eye-catching on the label to trick the gullible in to buying it regardless of what (if any) effect the ingredient has. They'd play it like they already do with things like caffeine, ginseng and guarana. In the UK (and I suspect North America too), they wouldn't be able to claim actual pain relief without selling it as a medicine, though they might go along the "alternative medicine" con of implying rather than outright stating.

Thanks for that. When I heard about it I read several articles claiming near miracle benefits, and was excited for a while, but the more 'legitimate' the source the more doubt I had about whether it was worth the effort. Haven't gotten around to trying it yet...

I've tried a number of things over the years for psoriatic arthritis, which is similar to rheumatoid, and have found only a few things that seem to help - staying off gluten and in general a 'clean' diet of mostly meats, veggies and fruits, fairly big doses of fish oil (1200 EPA, 600 DHA), turmeric (Turmaquik brand) and glucosamine condroiten MSM. The latter two seemed to really help a persistent knee problem that I suspect was/is arthritis related.

Someone suggested turmeric to me a while back, and one night my wife was out of town and I sat in bed and read for hours about the benefits. It's pretty amazing stuff - I encourage you to do some research on it. Anyway, even if it doesn't help my arthritis, there are still lots of benefits for those of us looking at 60 or older. And the type matters a lot - the raw stuff is basically not very bioavailable at all, and Meriva (the patented brand in Turmaquik) is about 30 times more bioavailable than raw turmeric. My doctor doesn't know if it's related, but since taking it my PSA dropped from an already low level in half in a year.

I have arthritis including gout, and I started using the CBD salve on my feet and ankles since the beginning of this year. It has made a very big difference. It cannot handle gout, but it does a good job on simple aches and pains in my feet.

I also sometimes use the oil under the tongue, but it does not seem to be as effective for me.

I too use curcumin for years and find it most helpful.

From all the meme's that I have seen on FB; CBD oil = snake oil.

In pill form it is used to treat glaucoma George Bush 1 used it

There has not been any human studies though, for CBD oil. https://www.aao.org/eye-health/ask-ophthalmologist-q/does-cannabidiol-oil-lower-raise-eye-pressure

Studies have shown that THC lowers the pressure, but at a much lower amount than other drugs.

My point though is that right now regardless of what uses CBD oil may or may not have, there are snake oil salesman looking to make a profit selling CBD oil. And they make all kinds of outlandish claims. After googling you should get the impression that CBD oil is a magic drug that cures everything and they will sell it to you.
