Scientists identify 35 genes associated with cannabis use

Pot has been considered safe for 5000+ years. You stop it.

Lot's of things have been considered safe, only to learn later not. When the money is there, and a target rich enough, you'll see.

*sigh*… why do you respond to this post, and not the others? And why are you rooting for me to have my medicine taken away, causing me to face what I face without any help at all? What's in it for you?

The exploitation he speculates can be applied to just about any successful product.

Let's just not try anything new...*just in case!*

Instead of recognizing the potential and overseeing it like we do for everything else. *smh*

Dude, it's not about you, and it's not about medicinal that I am concerned with, it's the recreational drug use. Calm down.

In terms of commercialization and 'corporate abuses', why does the distinction matter?

Look at the opioid crisis...much of that is started and enabled by legally prescribed meds.

But the recreational side destigmatizes the medicinal side, and makes it a lot easier to get access to.

True story: I have a friend up here, where the rules are a lot more relaxed, and he uses pot medicinally. Currently, for the next couple weeks, anyway, you need a prescription to legally have it. It's a technicality now, but it wasn't when this took place.

He went to three doctors, all of whom refused to give him a prescription. The last one he knew personally. That one finally told him the truth. He said his college (the governing body for doctors here, not sure if it's called the same thing down there) would black list him if he gave out prescriptions. He would constantly be under scrutiny, he would get harassed, it wasn't worth it for him - and here's the kicker - despite the fact that he believed it was a good option for my friend. He then told him about a dispensary he knew of that flew under the radar.

Now, in a legal recreational market, doctors wouldn't have to prescribe, but could consult. Plus, tax revenue could fund real studies to determine the benefits and risks associated, and find ways to manage or eliminate the risks.

People smoke dope anyway, Renae. All the time. All we're doing here is making it legit, and attempting to remove the stigma. Recreational is a nice bonus...the real help is for all the people it can help medicinally. When you root for the failure of one, you root for the failure of it all.

Goofy thread.

About the "associated genes" silliness. All they are saying there is that some people are using pot to help with their symptoms. Newsflash, eh?

Schizophrenia is complex. Some people are basically an egg with legs, something is go to crack them wide open. It's also a range of disorders, if the government ever gets it's hobnail boot off researchers necks, then we can get into what's actually going on. The ability of pot to downregulate part of the nervous system opens the possibility that it might be useful in managing some conditions.

There are many thousands of pot studies out there, I suggest you look at some of them. There are also some good Youtube videos, esp. the Israeli scientist that discovered cannibinoid receptors in the brain. This, ladies and germs, is real science.

 "Big Pharma" has the most to gain from legalizing medical marijuana

Could you elaborate on that? Your post #10 did nothing to clarify.
