Smoking cannabis ages the brain by an average of 2.8 years, new research suggests. This is compared to four years in schizophrenia patients, according to the largest study of its kind. Brain ageing is defined as reduced blood flow through the organ.
Excessive alcohol also ages the organ by 0.6 years, the research adds.
Lead author Dr Daniel Amen, founder of Amen Clinics, said: 'The cannabis abuse finding was especially important, as our culture is starting to see marijuana as an innocuous substance. This study should give us pause about it.'
Reduced brain blood flow has previously been linked to stroke and dementia

10, 15 years from now MJ is gonna get the Tobacco Legal Attack. Just you wait and see.

Harriet Hall has written critically about SPECT scans in articles for Quackwatch and for the Science-Based Medicine website.[18][19] Hall accuses the clinics of misrepresenting an unproven treatment as effective, of concealing important warning information, and of creating false hopes by promising things that can't be done.[18] She dismisses the scans as "pretty pictures" and says that although Amen himself seems to believe in his approach, "humans are very good at fooling themselves".[18]

A 2011 paper co-authored by the neuroscientist Anjan Chatterjee discussed example cases that were found on the Amen Clinic's website. The paper noted that the example cases "violate the standard of care" because a normal clinical diagnosis would have been sufficient and functional neuroimaging was unnecessary.[13] According to the American Psychiatric Association, "the clinical utility of neuroimaging techniques for planning of individualized treatment has not yet been shown."[9]

Don't smoke; vape concentrate.

That is the only way I do it anymore, other than the very occasional edible.

The ecig cartridges are okay. Or dump them into a container and dab with a coil as one would with thicker oil or wax. Smoking is absurd, and I'm not surprised at all that a lifetime of smoking anything adds years to one's brain.

My sister in law is terminally ill, she now uses medical marijuana (she has smoked it all her life, its just legal now), I asked her if she tried vaping, she hasn't, force of habit. I worry about her smoking in bed and causing a fire.

My take on weed us the same as Hitches take on alcohol..."I have gotten more from it than it has taken from me".

I don’t trust my dabbing skills anymore. I did too strong of a hit once and spent the next two hours curled up in the bathroom living out the lifespans of every sentient being in the universe. So I stick to the cartridges now for a more consistent experience.

Its not a surprise to me that the people that have admitted to smoking marijuana on at least a semi regular basis in this thread have some of the dumbest political positions.

H10, It’s been taken from you; you were just numb! :2wave:

A "top" for an ecig battery (4 watts, no more than 7 or atomizer might fry, cheap $10 battery). It costs about the same per gram as concentrates alone.

Concentrates alone require a "coil" to "low temp dab". They're generally a thick oil (which some freeze for ease of use) or a soft wax.

The coil ($40) for concentrates requires a 20w battery ($40).

One can dump the thin oil from a "top" (pictured above) and "dab" that in a coil for greater effect.

I looked your article quickly; 2.8 years against what, a lifetime? Anything done full bore w/o moderation is not healthy.

Right and how much do you have to smoke per day.

Yeah, I'll talk to her again, she has MJ delivered to her house, it helps, but she is also on liquid morphine.

The cartridges are like a joint and a coil like a bong. It's about 85% thc whichever concentrate, but volume per hit somehow matters. I don't find people stare at a wall from a cartridge hit, but will with cartridge oil from a coil.

Thick oil or wax, one heat and smoke free hit from a coil is an hour or two of bong high.

Cartridges don't really compare to concentrate and a coil for impact.

Daily Mail? When will you learn? Find a reasonable source.

Based on the abstract, the hype seems a bit much.

Brain aging? Is this a scientifically accepted definition? I dont think so. And were these people studied throughout their lives, or a one time deal? Unclear from the abstract.

Also, its showing association, not causation - cannabis users would probably have a whole host of other risk factors for brain issues, given that most of them are doing something that is generally illegal.

So overall, its a sketchy surrogate marker that isnt too useful in predicting anything, while the investigators (a guy from Google? WTF?) are claiming you can predict brain aging with it.

This looks like more of a press release than a useful paper. I’ll try to access it later and see what they are really talking about.

UTOPIA will not get here on its own....brains must be properly molded.

So as with all these anti pot studies it uses questionable methods, unconfirmed data and use words such as might, could and correlate. Not surprising once again they are trying to push an unproven narrative to those fearful of weed.
