RENO, Nev. (AP) — Nevada regulators and industry insiders say the state’s first year of broad marijuana legalization has exceeded even their highest expectations, with sales and tax collections already surpassing year-end projections by 25 percent.

Numbers from June are still outstanding but are expected to push taxable sales past $500 million, netting total tax revenue in the neighborhood of $70 million — with about $25 million devoted to schools.

Cash-strapped states should be watching this closely. Expect more states to follow NV's lead.

Great news. Less money going to gangs, more to schools, and less people going to jail for something as silly as pot. Win/Win/Win

Gambling and pot... ouch.

More mellow than alcohol and gambling; you gonna eat the rest of that pot-pie, man?

Best use of a story title in a long time... "smokes expectations"... outstanding.

People stoned out of their minds but the state is happy because they are getting tax money.

Reminds me of the cigarette settlement the states get from big Tobacco. They hope people keep smoking so the
gravy train continues. Sad stuff..

Pass the M&M Peanuts, please.

It won’t be long before the entire state of Iowa, let alone the rest of farm country, gets onboard this green machine.

We already know how MM products are helping to save PTSD lives, both Veterans and really everyone else.

Iowa State University is a world leader in agronomics. It’s all about hybrids with every plant.

Here in PA the teacher's pension fund is underfunded. A neighbor couple are teachers & he told me that after 40 years you only get 60% of your monthly salary as a pension payment. Kind of ironic to have educators pushing for pot legalization in the Keystone State but it may happen.

Nevada legalized marijuana a year ago. So are there more DUIs, ER visits and teens using pot?

https://www.rgj.com/story/news/marijuana/2018/07/03/legal-marijuana-recreational-pot-use-nevada-impact-one-year-later/723963002/

Have we seen an increase in pot-related DUIs?

Short answer: Looks like it.

Long answer:

Since July last year, the Washoe County Sheriff's Office alone has seen a substantial increase in the number of DUI arrests resulting solely from a positive test for marijuana.* In 2017, the sheriff's office arrested 852 people who later tested positive for cannabinoids, or marijuana compounds, in their blood system.

"Marijuana, with some of the THC levels out there — especially these concentrated products — we’re not sure how long their high is going to last. We want people to exercise their judgment responsibly," said Sgt. Corey Solferino, legislative liaison for the Washoe County Sheriff's Office.

If there's money involved, Chuck Grassley will be behind it. Look how many corn farmers he's made millionaires with fermentation ethanol sales & subsidies. And the people with all those $$$ keep getting him reelected.

Where does the rest of the money go?

I would be interested to understand how they are doing this testing. THC can be detected in the blood long after the effects have worn out. Curious to know how Nevada cops have dealt with this problem.

Personally I'm 100% for throwing the book at DUI's of any kind. But I don't think it should be a hurdle to legalization. I mean, if the case can be made on the gun control side that guns don't kill people, but rather the person's choice to pull the trigger, the same can and should be said about pot.

In PA my mom is currently on THC for her appetite, she is a cancer patient and its the only think that has worked in quite sometime so im thankful for it

hoping medical and rec go national soon

an addition to this... the only hurdle i see is detection, but im sure the more states legalize it the more tech/medical companies will work to detect it and invent technology

currently there is not a good system for "under the influence" detection that im aware of so that will need to improve.

With that sort of allocation, NV's county school systems had better start moving up in the rankings. (It's no surprise that the top performing school systems are predominantly in "blue" states. Why Nevada is an outlier in that regard is anyone's guess.)

Glad to hear your mom is getting some relief. I also take pot medicinally, for different reasons. My grandmother could definitely benefit from pot, she's 90 years old, and has arthritis pain and glaucoma. But because of the stigma that has been manufactured for decades, she wouldn't hear of it. And, sadly, I can't be honest about what has helped me so much, because I know it would upset her. I have very little patience for people who continue drive unnecessary stigma around pot.

Just because its in your system (for almost a month after intoxication) does not mean the traffic incidents can be attributed to THC.

To think so is as absurd as charging someone for a DUI for driving 5 days after they had a couple drinks.

i have very little for people that do that about anything when its just a stigma....

thanks, glad it works for you too

Hers is a little different though. its a THC concentrate and not just "medical weed"... from my understanding (which is very limited) its a concentrate form because she doesnt have pain just major issues with appetite so this is the route they go. Lower impairment as far as your stereotypical high and better more consistent as an eating aid.

though full medical marijuana is totally on the table for her if she does develop or need help with pain management.

There are a lot of different options when it comes to medicinal applications, from ingestion method to strain choice... I recommend the Leafly app...it will help make decisions as she goes through the various stages of her treatment, in terms of what options might work best for her.

Sadly there are very few doctors who seem to understand pot as medicine entirely, and medicinal users are on somewhat of a quest to find what works best for them, relying on the community to point them in the right direction.

Best of luck, sincerely.

In 20 years, no one will be smoking. With even just medical legalization comes black market edibles and vape concentrates. No cancer, emphysema or any other smoking hazards.

My head’s really not on any of the politicians right this moment with respect ✊ to these futures ISSUES. It’s with an awesome 😎 4-yo handsome dude growing up a great 👍 farm life.

We’ve done several ‘farm jobs’ together already today and I’ve learned from him multiple times. Right now he’s feeding a bonfire 🔥 Safely and I’m teaching him. Gotta go.
