In a move apparently designed to appease President Trump’s recent promise to execute narcotics traffickers, U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions this week released a memo urging federal prosecutors to seek the death penalty for "dealing in extremely large quantities of drugs."

Smarting from Sessions’ opposition to state-legal marijuana in places like California, Colorado and Washington state, the new guidelines sent chills through some in the cannabis community.

I think this knee-jerk move has not been clearly thought out, which seems to be a hallmark of Trump administration decisions in the war on drugs. No licensed, commercial pot grower or dispenser will ever wind up on Death Row.

The “knee jerk move” to enforce a law already on the books?

I thought you guys were for states rights? Personally I would love to see the federal government go after a dispensary. It would almost guarantee to get appealed to the SCOTUS and finally a decision made.

Yes knee jerk to equate legally licensed weed operators with Death Row inmates. It's probably unconstitutional ('due process') & patently ridiculous. To quote Gilbert & Sullivan's 'Mikado': Let the punishment fit the crime.

I’m all for the govt ****ing over liberals until they decide to get onboard with states rights. We just spent 8 years of Obama using the federal govt to run roughshod over conservative states.

I really hope Trump pushes this to the limit and maybe we can get an expanded 10th amendment

Except it’s not really legal, that whole supremacy clause and all.

As fur it being unconstitutional probably but that’s for the courts to decide. The Democrats shouldn’t have made the law to execute drug dealers but they did and now it’s funny to hear them whine about it

No one will ever be executed for engaging in legal weed cultivation, distribution or sales. That would be a direct violation of the 8th A. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cruel_and_unusual_punishment to refresh your memory on what it says about cruel & unusual punishment. Not much to decide.

Again there is no such thing as “legal weed cultivation”. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supremacy_Clause to refresh your memory.

As for the federal death penalty act of 1994, I said it was probably unconstitutional but the law is still on the books until the SCOTUS strikes it down

If it ever got to the SCOTUS, the 8th A. would Trump any death sentence conviction. Never happen.

One more reason to move to Canada. Legal at the Federal level this year. Personally I can't wait to enjoy the services that the taxation of this product and medicine will fund, not to mention the savings enjoyed from not having to catch, prosecute, and jail pot growers and smokers.

You know, I think I've been doing this whole "response to Trump" thing wrong. It seems that every single thing he does makes Canada look better, not to mention makes it a more attractive place for foreign money. Can't wait to host all the American pot tourists this summer! Their money will spend just fine up here! ;)

The “knee jerk move” to enforce a law already on the books?

Like slavery, right?

It was a law so should still be legal, right?

This idea that something is right because some politician used drugs to bolster their careers is madness.

I'll say it again:

Conservative liberty: You are perfectly free... to do as you're told.

No one ever accused the media of having common sense. The death penalty was part of Bill Clintons “Contract with America” and was used in one case. It was directed at the cocaine cartel smugglers, not legal pot growers.

It is clear to sentient people that pot is not what was included in the “opioid crisis” context of this threat.

Leave it to the national media to add to the crazies psychosis about Trump.

i dont get it

you want states to have the right to deal with pot laws the way they want to, but not immigration?

Please point to where I said states shouldn't have the right to immigration the way they want to? It is actually conservatives that want the federal government to have control over the states with immigration.

i seem to remember a bunch of people going kinda nutz as Arizona tried to administer immigration laws as they saw fit

and they were all from the left...maybe not you specifically, but they were democrats and progressives

Texas, Arizona...a number of states have tried to curb illegal immigration, and it was all about that being a federal thing

i agree that the states should have states rights

on education, immigration, drinking ages, and yes pot

i think the federal government has way too much power....and the states should take some of it back

Again there is no such thing as “legal weed cultivation”.

Bull****! The federal government has their own medical program with patients who receive regular shipments of the weed Federally Grown.

I believe it is the way they went about doing it that was found unconstitutional. I.e. joe sheriff

so do you want the states to administer ALL of their own stuff, or just the stuff that matter to your side?

if the state of colorado can say marijuana is legal, but it is illegal at the federal level....then the state of arizona can do what they want to with immigration, regardless of federal laws

you cant have your cake and eat it too....

Not gonna happen. We don’t even have the death penalty for aggravated rape.

It’s already happened. No one has been sentenced under it but the law is already on the books

There is no law allowing slavery still in the US code

Liberal intelligence: an oxymoron

What it will guarantee is a huge influx of high grade pot from Canada.

The nation is legalizing it and each province will have its own rules on who grows. Here they intend to ave their friends licensed which will threaten the existing $6 billion a year industry which will look for less expensive markets. The Canada-US border is open and undefended at this end it's all mountains and abandoned mines.

This is idiocy. All my nearly 70 years I have watched government after government go to war against drugs and for 70 years have watched drug makers and suppliers get richer and richer.

It is pure idiocy for ANY government to think we will EVER control drugs in any way. They never have yet and by making it "legal" here, any interdiction would result in a fine at most. You can't imprison people here for breaking a regulation.

Pot should be treated like tobacco, legal but taxed to the hilt. Balance the budget with the revenue.
Likewise alcohol...I don't use any of it so it won't affect me.

Hard drugs should carry long sentencing and hard labor.

Gas tax could be bumped up some as well.

Like so many others, the 8th Amendment doesn't matter anymore. Americans LIKE cruel and unusual punishment. The more cruel and unusual, the better. They LIKE torture, as long as it's done to muslims and people with dark skin, and they like obscene prison sentences for people who have committed victimless crimes.
