Mexico approves legalising medical marijuana | The Independent

Mexico’s Congress has approved the legalisation of medicinal cannabis.

A bill proposing to allow its use for scientific and health purposes was passed easily in the country’s Senate last December.

On Friday, the Lower House of Congress voted 371 in favour of the bill, with only 19 politicians voting against it or abstaining.

The bill will now go to President Enrique Pena Nieto, who is expected to sign it.

"The ruling eliminates the prohibition and criminalization of acts related to the medicinal use of marijuana and its scientific research, and those relating to the production and distribution of the plant for these purposes," the Lower House said in a statement on its website.

I hope they pass it. I'm for legalizing all drugs. I'm a progressive, but a libertarian on that issue. interestingly enough, William F. Buckley was for legalization of drugs, as well. I believe this would go a long way to pull the rug out of the cartels, etc.

With no drug prohibition laws the cartels would not exist. Without the drug laws, the CIA would not have all that cash it gets from trafficking. That is why the prohibition will never be ended.

Okay, we increase their budget to make up for it. I don't see this as an obstacle, and I'm not that cynical to even accept your premise, but, I'm not real knowledgeable about that particular issue.

I appreciate your honest answer. Yes, the CIA has been in the dope business for decades. Alfred McCoy has written extensively of it over decades. Gary Webb wrote of it in his series in the San Jose paper called Dark Alliance. They abandoned and vilified Webb, but after months of congressional investigation and more, on the same Friday the Monica Lewinsky scandal broke, the CIA admitted that Webb had been correct.

It is an obstacle because the CIA is an extremely powerful agency, and it will not allow the legislative branch to repeal the prohibition from which it makes so much money.

Just because Prohibition has never worked
Cost billions of dollars trying to enforce.
Doesn't mean we should stop wasting time, money and lives.

Why not? How does one equate to the other?

If the program we have doesn't work, wastes time, money and lives, why in the world would we continue to go down that path? Don't you think we should explore options that work?

Of course we should try other options, following a failed policy is insanity!

I will sometimes watch a show called "Drugs, Inc."
There was this one episode where they were interviewing these dealers.

The dealers all stated that they do not mess with MJ any more. This since the many states have legalized it.
They said there was no money in it any more. They were instead concentrating their efforts on coke, crack, meth, heroin, etc. More profit potential and the product takes up less space. So...I believe that Mexico legalising MMJ will only help the Mexican people grow more. It will not really affect the cartels. IMHO
