Marijuana Addiction

I did that for years after I finally stopped smoking everyday back in my 20's. It's only been recently--maybe 5-10 years--that I stopped smoking pot altogether, like you know, turn it down when offered some by a friend or at a party.

I even know why I stopped. Ironically enough, taking a toke was a buzz kill. It made me withdrawn and unable to communicate effectively. No fun. Not anymore.

Although, I have to admit. There are few things better than taking a few tokes and then walking in the woods. Or, better yet, a few tokes and then listening to some jams with good headphones.

Sitting in the pool on a hot summer day, watching the monsoon storm roll in....

A lot of dopers think that.

But get zonked on drugs, stagger into the forest, and get bit by a venomous reptile (rattle snake, copperhead, doesn't much matter) and it may end up being the last mistake they make.

If you want to catch a buzz, crack a Moose Head while watching Stanley Cup play on the flat panel.

Have not done shrooms in a good long while. I used to like being in the woods alone in the daytime.

I have to be careful with shrooms. I have had some of the best AND worst experiences of my life with shrooms. I have to keep the dose low or I WILL have a bad trip. I have the best experience now with just 1.5 grams of shrooms while vaping a little weed. I don't do it often, though. I might take weed for granted, but I treat shrooms with the utmost respect and only use them if I am in the perfect state of mind, which isn't often.

Of the 3, I'd rather my kids smoked weed. Alcohol can kill if used irresponsibly, and teens have this scary tolerance for the taste of hard alcohol. Tobacco will kill you eventually, unless something else kills you first, and it won't be pretty. It's also highly addictive and financially crippling. Weed, while not good for you, is the least harmful and least habit forming of the 3 hands down.

That being said I hope my kids don't try anything at a young age, and when/if they do that it is occasionally and not regularly.

I agree if legal. While illegal the criminal record if caught can do irreparable damage to a person. The legal consequences of marijuana are 1000's of times worse than the actual effects of the drug. Where with cigarettes and alcohol the physical consequences are usually much worse than the legal.

I think you hit the nail on the head with what's in the bold. I know that when I was only a recreational user (once a month or less), it was never a problem like it was when I was using it three or four times a day. But, trust me here. If you're smoking it from morning until night, every day for years, you will suffer withdrawals. Nothing like a heroin addiction, of course. But, you do feel like **** for a few weeks.

Back in the 80's I was a frequent weed smoker. Not EVERY day but almost every day. It was like that for several years. In the military, they started what they called "zero tolerance." That put the brakes on pot smoking. I did notice that I started to dream again when I slept. Other than that, I don't recall any other changes in my life as a result of going "cold turkey."

When I retire, cash in, and tell the world to go to hell, I do intend on smoking pot again. That day can't get here soon enough. LOL!

Heh, that was me. Less than one week after I retired from the Army I lit up. :)

Very true, they are not monkey food. In my early 20's I used to eat as much as 9 dry grams 3 times a week. If you want to see Heaven you must also prepare to see hell.

My first time, I took fresh shrooms and used a slap chop to dice up finely, a whole Dixie cup and wolfed it down, oh boy, life was interesting.

I may never do them again, but I still enjoy hunting them occasionaly for friends.

I can hardly describe how much I felt in my element during every phase of the process. Keep in mind in 1981 I hiked the A.T. end to end. I still love spending time in the woods.

I used to pick 'em from the back 40 pasture and brew up some tea. I have had countless good trips on them.

Then, that ONE time I did them, the usual pasture, the usual tea, I prayed to God to come down.

I have not done them since. Lesson learned.

I have too many important things on my mind these days to go visit 'shroomsville.

1 Corinthians 3:11

If you asked me, I'd say pot is addictive but nowhere near as bad as cigarettes, alcohol, cocaine or heroin. Proof of refer being addictive seems to be in the pudding, like when you ask your average pothead the basic addiction questions.

Has use of pot ever resulted in legal problems? Has your use of pot ever cost you a job? Has your use of pot ever caused problems in your family? Do you smoke pot everyday, more than once a day, etc? Do you get depressed or irritable when you run out of pot? That sort of thing.

Now, does pot make you do really stupid, dangerous things or cause people to commit acts of violence like we see when someone is drinking booze? No. But, people do steal for money to buy pot. And, if anyone has ever known a pothead, you'd have to admit they do say a lot of stupid ****, and they do tend to be rather lazy bumps on a log.

So, one has to ask. Would you rather have your kid smoking pot or drinking booze? How about cigarettes? I'd argue none of the above, but if my loved one had to abuse a substance, other than coffee, I'd probably rather they smoked pot than any of the other drugs out there, legal or illegal.

What say you all?

Like sex and video games, pot can be psychologically addictive.

It doesn't cause physical dependence, aka, physical addiction.

Me too, cept I had to go venturing into hell awhile before I got my head right, quite a few times.

Oh well, made me who I am today, so be it.

Just not a road I choose to travel any further.

i turned to drugs for mind expansion & pain reduction. What resulted was pain expansion and mind reduction. Carrie fischer: Actress that played princess leya in the original star wars movie

carrie fischer said the last time she took lsd was in sri lanka: "there was an elephant on the beach. And i thought, now i'm not hallucinating. If there really is an elephant on the beach, then what am i taking the acid for?"

I did notice that I started to dream again when I slept.

Weed suppresses dream awareness (everyone dreams, the question is being aware of them) and has been prescribed for such in cases of problems with nightmares. It's the one real cost of smoking it, especially if one actively pursues lucid dreaming. Lucid dreaming is a means of harvesting the 1/3 of ones life spent sleeping. People worry about losing or gaining a few years while ignoring the fact that 1/3 of their life is unnecessarily spent in darkness.

BUT !!

In addition, dream content provides us a window into our own psyche.

As psychologist Joy Browne has said:
"Dreams are a way of whispering in our own ear." JB

Bad trips are like bad dreams--totally random. A friend walked off the roof of a building back in the late 80's while tripping on Cid. Broke both legs and damaged his back. He said he imagined that the sidewalk was only a few inches away.

His experience sort of woke me up to the real risks of that drug and rid me of the desire to trip. That or I had just discovered coke.

I would say that dope is less addictive than sweet vanilla pudding.

Yeah, but no one gets arrested, fired or winds up destitute from eating too much vanilla pudding....just fat.

....and dying slowly of the failing kidneys, rotting limbs and fouling teeth from diabetes. The up-side is that these are all natural occurrences that would have come by a little later in any event. ;)

On a slight side-note, but related to your post: I am amazed at the ability of the human body's ability to stay alive. Be it Keith Richards or some guy weighing 150 lbs over his ideal weight, freaking humans seem to keep going and going and going...

Yes, indeed! As though they deserved it, too. Quite astounding. Darwin's path of survival is wider, than one would think appropriate.

I have come to learn that they can compliment each other. Get buzzed and pig out on sweet vanilla pudding. With bananas and vanilla wafers. Pure ecstasy. LOL!
