Legal pot and car crashes: Yes, there's a link - CBS News

Does driving while high have any impact on auto accident rates? Legalized recreational marijuana use in Colorado, Oregon and Washington correlates to about a 3 percent increase in auto collision claim frequencies compared to states without such legislation, according to a new Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) study. It's the first one the group has conducted since the drug went on sale legally."More drivers admit to using marijuana, and it is showing up more frequently among people involved in crashes," the study said.
The HLDI is affiliated with the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, a nonprofit research organization that usually focuses on figuring out which cars are safest. The group is funded by auto insurance companies, which have a vested interest in not having to pay claims and -- of course -- hold a bias against impaired driving of any kind.

I'm exited they are taking an in depth on this now that they have evidence. Show the true cost of "Chill dude, it's just mj"

Like how the HLDI is associated with the insurance companies that don't want to pay out, lol.

So first off, I'm sure they can find marijuana in someone's system who has been in a car wreck, but that doesn't mean it was a contributing factor to the crash as it can remain in one's system for far long than is active.

Secondly, CO has some terrible drivers, and it's not because of legal weed. It's because assholes from Texas and California are moving into this state in droves. Probably because we have legal weed, lol.

Lets ban booze while we are at it.

Just like guns don't kill, booze and pot don't kill. It is irresponsible users who do the damage.

You're exited that what? An institute with a blatant conflict of interest finally put something together that sounds scientific and shows weed is dangerous and you can stick it to those stoners on the forums? You need a hobby.

I disagree. California drivers are among the best in the world. We routinely drive 80 in bumper to bumper traffic while on the phone taking notes. We can spot drunks and stoners for a 1/4 mile and know not to spook them with a blind spot pass.

To drive in California, you really have to be good. Our freeways are good, fast, and congested. Our surface streets a celebration of bazzare signage and conflicting lights and signals, not to mention mixing with pharmaceutically impaired drivers, and construction zones.

A Coloradoian (?) would be terrified and crying like a little girl after ten minutes of commute hours on a busy freeway.

We may be the most screwed up state in the nation, but boy can we drive!

You'll never convince the statistically innumerate that the righteousness of their cause has no basis and is misplaced.

So I read this story and I'm really struggling with this graph, it says there is a 3% increase in collisions since 2014 compared to neighboring states. What does that mean? Couldn't that mean there is a 3% decrease in collisions in the neighboring states? Could it mean there is a 3% increase in texting related claims? Where is the link to recreational marijuana in this study other than the fact that Colorado and the other two states legalized the recreational use of marijuana?

I'm not advocating for driving under the influence. Especially Ambien. I just don't get what this is supposed to prove.

And does it take population increases into account?

This sort of hokum peddled off to the easily misled pops up every few years to renew the Chicken Little crowd in their vigor.

And think about it.

California drivers are so exceptional, millions drive without drivers licenses and insurance, knowing they are so exceptional, tested ability, and financial responsibility are little more than an unnecessary nuisance.

Wait, are you suggesting Renae is using a study from an organization with a clear conflict of interest to enable her continued axe grinding? That doesn't sound like her at all...you must have smoked something...lol

Whatever someone with an agenda wants to turn it into.

I am laughing my ass off. You have NO clue. You are not as good of drivers as you think, not by a long shot. American drivers in general are pretty darn tame. California has ****ty roads and their drivers are doing something other than driving while driving. Californians and Americans would be eaten alive if they drove elsewhere. Try Europe or the middle east. South America or Asia.

Some asshole Californian on my way to work this morning. I swear to god those jerks have zero concept of driving.

We should build a wall around Texas and California, save the rest of the Republic some headaches, lol.

Weed be bad, yo!

Excited to see more studies into this threat to the roads.

Never touched the stuff myself, but I have to admit, I've never come across a mean and angry Pot-Head :2razz:

At least wait 'till I get out of Texas first!

Boozers drive 90mph, potheads drive 20mph.

Speaking of walls, has Don received Nieto's check yet?
