Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel made a surprise announcement on Tuesday that he will not seek reelection to a third term, opening up the city’s venerable Fifth Floor to an outsider candidate for the first time in decades.

“I’ve decided not to seek reelection. This has been the job of a lifetime,” Emanuel told journalists gathered at City Hall. His wife, Amy Rule, stood at his side, tears in her eyes. It was in the same spot that former Mayor Richard M. Daley announced he wouldn’t seek reelection eight years ago, after which Emanuel came to the job with Daley’s connections and insider background.

Well this took me by complete surprise. I suspect that Emanuel may make a play for running for President or another office.

Likewise the race for Chicago city mayor just got red hot. Here's the current candidates. (I am currently supporting Lori Lightfoot, who seems to be in the strongest position of the pack.)

• Dorothy Brown, Clerk of the Circuit Court of Cook County
• Amara Enyia, community activist, organizer, lawyer, PhD, policy consultant[
• Ja'Mal Green, executive director of the Majostee Allstars Community Center
• Jerry Joyce Jr., former Assistant States Attorney and son of former Alderman Jeremiah E. Joyce
• Troy LaRaviere, President of the Chicago Principals and Administrators Association
• Lori Lightfoot, President of the Chicago Police Board
• John Kozlar, candidate for alderman in Chicago's 11th ward in 2011 and in 2015.
• Garry McCarthy, former Superintendent of the Chicago Police Department
• Matthew Roney, pharmaceutical technician
• Neal Sales-Griffin, professor at Northwestern University's Farley Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation
• Paul Vallas, former Chief Executive Officer of Chicago Public Schools
• Willie Wilson, businessman and candidate for mayor in 2015, candidate for President in 2016

But he's doing such a great job! (by democrat standards)

The question is, "Will Chicago wake up and vote stop voting for failed Democratic policies?".

Emanuel's response to the latest spate of violence and murder was anemic at best.

Not me. That moron was getting blasted from both sides of the political spectrum. He stood zero chance of getting re-elected and he FINALLY realized it himself!

With his record of allowing Chicago's south and west sides to be drenched in blood? He wouldn't be able to get elected dog catcher!

However, i won't be surprised to see him beg for a job with J.B. Prickster if that Madigan buttlicker wins.
