Would you prefer Trump to get out there, pound the table and suggest panic, yelling: WE ARE ALL GOING TO DIE!
Of course you would.

How many of Californias 40 million people died of something else that day? You do not want the government in panic mode, unless there is some political benefit to you.

It like flu deaths. 20 - 30,000 a year due. No one cares because they are the old and infirm. I dont think this Chinese practice run was a doomsday weapon. (Not this time).

On the bright side, earthquakes, floods, and fires have been temporarily cancelled.

The Rank Hypocrisy of Trump’s Ebola Tweets - The Atlantic

On July 31, two days before Brantly was due to be evacuated (and almost a year before Trump began his campaign by descending down a gold escalator), Trump tweeted, “Ebola patient will be brought to the U.S. in a few days—now I know for sure that our leaders are incompetent. KEEP THEM OUT OF HERE!”

A day later he added, “Stop the EBOLA patients from entering the U.S. Treat them, at the highest level, over there. THE UNITED STATES HAS ENOUGH PROBLEMS!” And later that evening, “The U.S. cannot allow EBOLA infected people back. People that go to far away places to help out are great—but must suffer the consequences!”

The next day: “The fact that we are taking the Ebola patients, while others from the area are fleeing to the United States, is absolutely CRAZY—Stupid pols.” And also: “The U.S. must immediately stop all flights from EBOLA infected countries or the plague will start and spread inside our ‘borders.’ Act fast!”

Seems he doesn't like to incite panic and insanity when it's convenient for him, or if his political ass is not on the line.

The fact is, we don't yet know where this will go, but all signs point to the fact this thing is very infectious and could have long term implications for peoples health and the global economy, whether you like it or not, whether you think that's fair or not.

And while I'm not in favor of the full blown panic the American Right Wing Media incited during the Ebola crisis, trying to downplay its significance entirely in the face of what we are seeing, is negligent as a leader.

One minor correction.

In your thread title you say "They hate him for that!"

Actually IMO "they've" (as in the power elites and all the various purveyors of identity politics and "democratic" socialism) hated him ever since he blew their minds by winning the 2016 election despite all assurances it could never, ever happen.

Since then these groups have been seeking some way to undo the unbelievable, and failing that, to prevent a repeat in the 2020 election.

Thus the non-stop efforts to kick him out (failed), roadblock his policy efforts, and denigrate his actions (over 90% negative press) which is working on some.

That side of the argument has been predicting doom and gloom for three years, and now they have this new beacon of hope...another pandemic caused by China (whoda thunk?) they can use to blame Trump for.

BTW, don't count Mother Nature out; there is plenty of time for another natural disaster to try to blame Trump for. ;)

There's a balance between being cautious and outright panic and hysteria, you know? A real leader has the ability to caution people about danger without freaking them out and causing a panic. Trump doesn't have the skills to do that. I think that more than any other time in a president's tenure, keeping the public informed and feeling confident in him is one of the more difficult tasks any president could have.

If there ever was a time or when Trump's authoritarian tendencies would be beneficial and not destructive, it would be now, during the threat of a coronavirus outbreak. Emergency situations require urgent and prompt decisions. Nobody needs to hear "It may just disappear next week, and it may not. We'll see what happens". NO, that is not comforting, that is not decisive and it is most certainly not good leadership.

What would happen if another threat just popped up today or next week? A mass shooting or terrorist attack or a plane shot down, or whatever. Is Trump ready, willing and able to juggle more than one emergency at a time? 'Leadership' -- it's just not what we're witnessing.

Well said. Yes, lots more people are dying of something else. No, the Coronavirus is not necessarily fatal.
But to say it's nothing, we're well prepared for it, when we're not, is just foolish.

Have you ever heard the phrase, “If there is a fire, call me when it’s out”.

The government is not as asleep as the media would have you believe.

The proper reply to the OP is "horse puckey." No one is selling "panic" as the remedy to COVID-19. Ask yourself why someone would write such a thing.

He's just calmly lying to everybody that there's no problem, like getting the number of cases from 15 down to zero when there are 70 and counting. Calmly making senseless statements like ““Well, I don’t think it’s inevitable,” (contradicting Messonnier and the health officials who spoke after him Wednesday.) “It probably will, it possibly will. It could be at a very small level or it could be at a larger level. Whatever happens, we’re totally prepared.” Yeah, this guy’s got a grip on things.

Trump has already eliminated the pandemic preparedness unit in the White House in 2018 and cut public health programs over the past several years. Now he’s eliminating the PhDs from leadership positions and installing wunderkind like Pence, who thinks tobacco doesn’t cause cancer and stopped an HIV needle exchange program in Indiana, which is proven to help prevent spread of HIV. Yeah, this is somebody we want in charge to prevent the spread of a disease.

Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar had advocated for far more than the $2.5 billion that was ultimately requested by Trump, about half of which is reallocated from existing funds. Azar was demoted and replaced by Pence. At Pence’s request, Mulvaney sent out an email to administration staffers and Cabinet secretaries ordering that all communication about the virus be routed through the vice president’s office. No sense in having some truth-telling PhD informing the public as done in the past. Yeah, nothing to be worried about there.

An HHS whistleblower complaint alleging that more than a dozen HHS employees were sent to receive the first Americans evacuated from Wuhan, China, the center of the outbreak, without protective gear or adequate training. Carpe diem.

Trump has really put rapid response into slow motion incompetency. And I didn’t list more that his admin has done to make this thing such a mess. Yeah, real calming.

It isn’t the Coronavirus that is the doomsday, Trump is the doomsday virus on America. What a piece of work.

BTW, we have about 80,000 flu deaths per year.

In the spirit of comparison.

And then Obama waited six months...

But it wasn't until six months later, October, that then-President Obama declared a public health emergency on what was already a pandemic. By that time, the disease had infected millions of Americans and more than 1,000 people had died in the U.S.

CNN reported at the time:

Since the H1N1 flu pandemic began in April, millions of people in the United States have been infected, at least 20,000 have been hospitalized and more than 1,000 have died, said Dr. Thomas Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. [emphasis added]

Fact-Check: Obama Waited Until 'Millions' Infected and 1000 Dead in U.S. Before Declaring H1N1 Emergency | News and Politics

So, in comparison...Trump and Obama both advising the same calm, but Trump actually doing something about it now instead of waiting till a thousand people have died.

Trump will tweet anything that helps him with money or votes. Let's go back and look at his Twitter history and see what he said about other politicians and other situations. Like firing Presidents if the DOW drops. Or Muslims celebrating.

Plus, the OP is being overly dramatic like a 1970s soap opera.

There's a lot of emotional investment in Dear Leader.

There's a lot of emotional investment in Dear Leader.

Their hate drives them.

Fear can be a powerful drug. Even after a president has shown us his lies and corruption. He just needs to keep the spotlight on Mexicans.

So that is the tRump supporter set of choices????

Run around ranting and wailing like he does over impeachment, his wall, immigrants, NATO, yadda yadda yadda....

Or lying about how fast a vaccine can be made, or 'the best response in history', crap like that.

Or grave but calm response being honest for once- yeah I know fat chance of that... :doh

The tRump/Pence response reminds me of the poor fella who fell off the top of a 30 story building. As he passed each window the people inside cried out- "Poor man!" but he smiled back and said- "so far, so good!"

It didn't turn so well in the end... :(

You and Pence compare a COMPLETE run of the flu with the START of this virus... :doh

We haven't even gotten to the end of the beginning, tRump lies about how fast an EFFECTIVE vaccine will be available. I heard Pence repeat the same thing BushII/McCain said as the stock market crashed earlier- "The fundamentals of the economy are sound"

Fool me once.... :peace

Reading the title of this thread reminded me that it is probably not a good idea to carry a weapon during i.e. a hurricane evacuation. Now translate that to a mass panic during an epidemic.
Keep calm, don't give into hysteria. Look our for your neighbors.
