Papadopoulos' guilty plea is much bigger problem for Trump than the Manafort indictment - CNNPolitics

"In truth and in fact, however, and as set forth above, defendant PAPADOPOULOS met the Professor for the first time on or about March 14, 2016, after defendant PAPADOPOULOS had already learned he would be a foreign policy advisor for the Campaign; the Professor showed interest in defendant PAPADOPOULOS only after learning of his role on the Campaign; and the Professor told defendant PAPADOPOULOS about the Russians possessing" dirt" on then-candidate Clinton in late April 2016, more than a month after defendant PAPADOPOULOS had joined the Campaign."

So, Papadopoulos copped to lying to the FBI about the timing of his contacts with Russians. In his initial interview in January 2016, Papadopoulos was insistent that he had reached out to his foreign contact "The Professor" (amazing!) before he had formally joined the Trump presidential campaign. He was arrested in July, pleaded guilty in October and appears to have been cooperating in between.

It appears that Papadoupolos was flipped and took a guilty plea several weeks before news of his indictment was released today.

Some folks on Team Trump are probably sweating bullets right now wondering what he turned over to Mueller in return for the plea bargain.

Statement from Papadopoulos attorney unlikely to relieve their anxiety:

Never heard of this guy before today and it is curious as to why he felt he had to lie to the FBI about the timing of his contacts with these Russians. You would think people would know better than to lie to the FBI, but apparently not.

Well, that's kind of the thing: I'm pretty sure everybody in the Trump administration and campaign lied about their contacts with Russians. If even one person was honest from the start, I'm not aware of it.

I just have seen a report on CNN, Papadapolous turned over emails from Gates to Manafort which directly implicates an attempt at collusion between the Russian Gov and the Trump campaign. Trump really wanted those emails and this is contrary to what Trump has been claiming for months. The only thing fake here is Trumps integrity. First it was fake news, then it was a witch hunt, now its "oh he was a low level advisor". Do you Trumpsters not see the narrative changing as the story develops, one does not need an anvil to fall all their head to see what is going on here. Trumps team WANTED to sell us out for a win, and your too busy on the Hilldog hate train to see were the actual issue lies.:doh

But for anyone with a brain in their head, the lying stops when it is the FBI asking the questions. Chances are, if they are asking you a question, they already know the right answer.

That's really funny, because he was one of Trump's foreign policy advisers.

If you are able to exercise that level of judgment, then you, my friend, don't have what it takes to be a member of the Trump team.

There has apparently been a lot of drain swampage since last year.

That's nothing compared with the swamp drainage that's going to occur in the coming months.

Sessions lied to congress about it. Flynn lied to the rest of the WH, maybe others. Very stupid, I agree.

Thankfully, most criminals aren't as smarter, or they'd never get caught.

That's a great line!

If that is the case (big if right now), the cookie will crumble. Die hard Trump supporters will need a stiff drink of "fake news" and a freshly laminated victim card.

The worst part of that name is spelling it properly. It took me several tries. :lamo

As we can see he spelled it wrong!

I could not cut and paste the pic I did see earlier. Trump and this low level advisor sitting at a table together, so how low a level employee was this guy, by tomorrow Trump will be tweeting Popadopolous was the janitor. No offense to janitors, an honorable profession, unlike a Trump Campaign Advisor.

What you're reciting is the phenomenon that has surprised me for months. People on this forum and in r/l continue to claim there's nothing behind the allegations despite all the lying done about it by Trump and his cronies. When I bring this up, I still get the responses, "no one lied (like Sessons, Don Jr., etc.. ).

It's a tribal thing. Trump supporters cannot heed any stark evidence that Trump and his crowd are dirty.

Yep, and the NSA has probably listened in on the telephone conversations and read the emails, and then they tipped off the FBI on those conversations, so the FBI already knows what's going on and what the answers should be to their questions they are asking.

Well, then Trump likes his janitor in National Security meetings!

Papadopolous should not have lied. From the plea document, it doesn't look as if he broke any laws -- except for lying about his connections with Russian associates, which is, of course, completely legal.
