If the President Lies, Does It Matter? | National Review

The National Review (that far-left progressive tabloid) seems to have tossed in the towel and just accepted that Trump's gonna lie. But even they sound like it might be still hard to swallow...

"Okay. But one more question: Would we be so tolerant of the lying, or the bullsh**ting, if a liberal Democrat were in office? When Trump tells one of these whoppers, a lot of us yawn, I think. A “new normal” can become a regular old normal very quickly. But maybe yawning is not in order."

So the new normal is a serial liar as president who can daily say crap that is well known to be nonsense but is now is suppose to roll off our collective outrage like water on a ducks back because he is a pathological liar with serious self control problems and an ego larger than the Grand Canyon?

No thank you.

They day we accept that is the day we lose the nation.

Nothing to see here... just the Right flailing about, trying to figure out what to do with the monster they've created.

It matters. but how much it matters depends on what the lie was about and the context of it.
As to would we be tolerant of it etc... just saying Bill Clinton pretty much answers that.

You guys never batted an eye when Obama lied. So, really? And does it even count as a "lie" when it's a gross mischaracterization by leftist morons, of something the president said? You people have cried wolf so many times, I no longer believe ANYTHING the propaganda wing of the Democrat party says.

So judge mental.
I'm still trying to find a guy who wouldn't lie about sex.
I just assume the bill critics are not getting enough.
Maybe too old??

Yes, but look at the bright side...
I guess that makes it easier for you to swallow Trump's every ejaculation without question!

You mean you can keep your plan garbage? Read the context.
What do we expect from a white high school boy (leftist morons 2 nd grade insult) and doesn't know the difference between a noun and an adjective

lol..."Trump doesn't lie. The media just mischaraterizes what he says." :lamo

Is that like 'people have called me racist for so many things it no longer has any meaning'? Those positions seem similar.

The American political system began it's decline to this point when Bill Clinton was cleared on his impeachment. By making it a silly issue about a "blow job" they fooled the electorate enough not to care that, yes indeed, he had lied under oath.

That sent a message to every future president: he could lie about anything, and did, with "weapons of mass destruction" then "mission accomplished", then "You can keep your plan", by simply accepting this corruption because 'the other side is worse", you degenerate into tribalism where facts don't matter anymore, it's how much can you get even for the last four or eight years.

Why should Trump tell the truth? His friend, at the time, told the only kind of lie that gets you prison time got away with...so Trump thinks he will too. And, based on his shallow-minded followers I don't lying ever will be an issue

But this ain't the propaganda wing of the Democratic Party. This is the National Review, one of the most intelligent conservative journals out there, founded by William F. Buckley, Jr. (who must be spinning in his grave these days).

Seriously? We had a President that was impeached for lying under oath, the act of telling a lie which was also a criminal act, and your side supported him completely and deflected by saying it was about him getting a hummer in the White House, so he was not convicted in the Senate and from that point forward, lying became not just normal for politicians (as it always had been) but now it was also okay to do under oath.

/example of partisan hackery to point out partisan hackery

I believe that politicians that lie should be removed by the voters in the next election. However, as your post and my example above demonstrates is that as long as the lie comes from your (all encompassing you) guy, you'll (all encompassing you) support them, and if it comes from the other side's guy, it's a threat that the day we accept it from their side, will be "... the day we lose the nation."

I think that Trump should be called out on his lies, but I find it laughable hypocrisy to do so as if no President has lied or broken the law before Trump arrived on the scene.

Let's not just blame Bill Clinton. Kennedy lied to the people on a regular basis. FDR lied to the American people on a regular basis. He clearly knew we were going to enter into the war but ran his entire campaign on the fact he was against us going to war. What about Reagan and the Bush's?? I will grant you this Trump is no where near the professional liar of a Kennedy, FDR, or Clinton. They are clearly the smoothest liars in our history. Just because you are not a great liar shouldn't mean you are any worse than the all time greats.

Man...I just cant get past the thread title. Its exhausting. Cant we PLEASE stop talking about Obama?

I would not want to make a habit of trash talking Presidents, but right here right now is it useful. He openly does what others do but pretend to not do, which makes him the more honest one. We have got to get back to truth and honesty in this nation, Trump highlighting how very far we are from that helps to highlight the problem.

I agree completely. It wasn't the BJ. It was the lying to Congress. We have lowered the bar so much with respect to what we expect from our Presidents that it's really no wonder that we have a lying buffoon as President. We deserve the idiot.

Frankly I doubt the nation would have been in much better shape with Hillary. In my time on these boards I have come to see very little difference between the two parties; they use the same tactics, deny the same type of lies. I have often wondered if the American people would recognize "good" government.

If Trump made a statement, and no one heard it, would it still be a lie?

It's not that no president ever lied before Trump. It's that no president, or anyone else in public life that I can think of, ever lied so frequently, persistently, and blatantly.

If Trump says it's raining, I'll check outside before I get out my umbrella.

Worse was Bush lying to sell his invasion. Honorable mention to Obama for claiming to be fixing the medical system as he pretended to not notice its main flaw, and did nothing about it.

He was Trash Talking Trump as he asked for the job .

Enough said.

You can "keep your lies" and still save $2500.00 annually. :lamo

Agreed! He never made a secret of what he was. Some people just didn't see it. Others did, but voted for him anyway because they thought the system needed shaking up. I just hope the Democrats wake up one of these days and start connecting with people like they used to.
