I found this to be a fascinating republican "insider" expose of how republican strategy evolved and what trumpism has done to the party.

Yet another damning indictment of trump and his cancerous effect on republican policy. It also undercuts a whole bunch of partisan arguments we have become accustomed to hearing from the "conservatives" on this board.

Longtime GOP strategist says he’ll ‘work with Democrats’ to defeat Trump | PBS NewsHour

Stuart Stevens is one of the Republican Party’s most successful campaign strategists, with a career spanning decades. In his revealing new book, “It Was All a Lie: How the Republican Party Became Donald Trump,” Stevens admits the GOP uses race as an issue to divide Americans and win elections -- and says the party has abandoned its principles in the Trump era. He joins Judy Woodruff to discuss.

<snip>

If you go back and you read the Pat Buchanan and Kevin Phillips memo that was written for Nixon which really outlined the Southern Strategy, the acknowledgment Republicans can't get African Americans, therefore, the need is either to suppress them or to divert them from the Democratic Party, has been at the core of Republican electoral strategy.

<snip>

Yes, I think that Donald Trump exposed these fault lines in the party, and made it impossible for a lot of us to deny.

It — really, the party clearly doesn't believe in what it said it believed in. I think that, you know, you go back a few years ago, we would have said there's a core set of beliefs, personal responsibility, character counts, strong on Russia, fiscal sanity, free trade, pro-legal immigration.

All of these were bedrock principles. And now it's not that the party has drifted away from these. The party is actively against each of these principles.

<snip>

I think the key issue behind the change, especially of the Republican Party is the fact that most people... And even many people on this board who would vote Republican, don’t understand what they actually believe beyond the bumper sticker slogan.

I can imagine for many they are simply brought up with it, so they sort of hear about, as an example some of the buzz words: Personal Responsibility, Rule of Law and Small Government, we can add more but we’d be here all day.

Okay, so they say Hey, I’m a Small Government Conservative who is for the Rule of Law and Personal Responsibility.

Nothing wrong with that, perfectly legitimate point of view.

But ask most of them to go beyond that, philosophically and Practically... And they haven’t a ****ing clue What it really means or how to apply it.

And not only that, but how the people they support most definitely don’t and merely use it as a slogan for that very reason.

I’m from a far more sceptical culture that views politics with far more cynicism and I don’t get why particularly with the GOP, people aren’t more cynical of their marketing strategy, which is to basically say to their average voter:

“You’re a rough and tumble, individualist tough guy aren’t you? Yeah you are! You don’t need no Gubmint Safety Net or Healthcare, You’re TOUGH!”

And then they steal trillions from you and your children’s future to give a billionaire and massive corporations just a little bit more, or to save them from their own greed when they make stupid bets like 2008, you know, personal responsibility.

All the meanwhile, supporting, passively and sometimes vocally, the voter suppression techniques of that same party to rip away any dissenting voices in Red States.

The Democrats are bad, but it’s all a by-product of this terrible 2 party system.

Republicans take things much further to be extra awful and again at the core of it all, is the Republican Voter, Trump is bad, but he’s only a symptom.

The average Republican Voter doesn’t actually know jack **** about what they really believe and what their party actually does on, I was gonna say their behalf but they don’t do anything on their behalf because Republicans don’t work for their constituents, they just fool them with nonsense every election, they couldn’t even be asked to help them during a pandemic, yet they still vote for them :shrug:

So in conclusion after all that.

Ignorant Voters + A bad political system + Unlimited Money in Politics (legalized corruption) = The ********ery you see today.

Ahh, another conveniently timed story from a "news" partisan propaganda organization! The standard democrat/"news" media campaign line is that "Trump/republicans are dividing us".... This is hands down the most transparently OBVIOUS example of B.S. leftist projection throughout the leftist "news" media's propagandosphere! How exactly is Trump "constantly dividing us racially"?

Last i checked, its NOT Trump who's CONSTANTLY trying to separate Americans into racial and ethnic groups, then lumping ALL nonwhites into the "black group", then turning ALL members of the "blacks" against the "whites"! Thats what the left does on a daily basis! AOC publicly blames "white people" for literally all the world's ills, tells ALL nonwhites that "you are all black", in order to pull off the standard Marxist proletariat v bourgeoisie war, with blacks as the proletariat and whites as the evil bourgeoisie that MUST be defeated!

There are state democrats calling for an END to history classes in grade school, because "American history is too white". Others are constantly talking about a new thing called "toxic whiteness"! Saying that objective thinking and hard work are "symptoms of toxic whiteness"!

yawn...

It sucks when a party elite finds out that the party rank and file decides they want a different direction for the party.

It's not surprising that party elite will abandon his party and help the other party defeat the will of his own rank and file. Like the Dem Elites, the Rep Elites expect the rank and file to just shut up and vote like they are told to vote.

Look up the rise of Gingrich and the tactics he introduced to our politics.

It is a period of much study. There's lots to read.

But at the end all of the "liberals are the enemy of America!" And "never speak ill of another republican" and all the manipulative cognitive linguistic bull**** reinforced by the supposedly independent conservative media that nonetheless delivers all the new narratives with all the same verbiage and imagery on the same day....

And here we are.

But you are correct that our current divide is not organic. It is a product for which there are contracts and pay stubs. The purpose of which is to keep your side's voters from communicating with the enemy.

And let's not forget the Hastert Rule, coincident with the Gingrich era. And he (Hastert) turned-out to be a perv.

What a sad fallacious piece of bull****. Here's a guy that has been a extremely successful republican operative for 50 years working in every republican presidential campaign to as a political strategist. He is intimately familiar with the evolution of its strategy and he's finally become so disgusted with what trump has done the basic principles of the party he has DEVOTED HIS LIFE to, that he has declared himself in active political opposition to his life long party and its leader.

So your response? spew stupid partisan bumperstickers projecting and deflecting.

If you have anything even remotely approaching an intelligent response to the substance of this OP I'm all ears. But if you think your vitriolic yapping dog defense is anything more than empty partisan prattle, you are sadly mistaken.

So, he got fired or demoted, and now he's getting back. NEXT!

I see you subscribe to man the vindictive animal who seeks revenge at the slightest slur. extremely facile excuse to dismiss the content. Yet more expertise biting the dust in republican trumpland. the bench is getting might thin.

I see you beggar the comparison.

The average critic of democratic voters is a self absorbed, self impressed, room temperature IQ ninny. But I swear it doesn't show if you don't bend down.

i would think that anyone with integrity that was duped by Trump will work to defeat him this November.

if you don't know Trump is a con man by now you're an idiot. if you do and still vote for him you're either extremely partisan, have fallen for the Rush/Sean/Fox hate selling thing or are a modern day Confederate.

yep. sure does suck to be a traditional conservative republican these days. Especially in the liberal welfare state of America.

Marxism is only about class. BLM consists of several white people as well as SURJ of which i am a part of. Ive made phone calls to representatives to advocate regulation that would stop the monopolization of prison phone lines or treat them as public utilities in order to bring down the price of prison phone calls for all prisoners, even white ones. You are dismissed. Your hardcore grip of the gop is slipping. Personally i’d like the gop to go the way of the whigs and reform but thats not my call :p

What's more, they don't seem to understand or care if they do understand that trump and his supporters are alienating everyone who is not a white nationalist. They can deny it all they want but everyone knows it's true. Trump is the most vile person to ever hold the office of president and yet look at his approval rating among the gop, it's deplorable that so many people still support this pathological liar. The base of the gop has been told for so many decades starting back with reagan that government is not the solution to your problems, the government is your problem and taxes are bad and democrats even worse. Decade after decade every republican candidate has sung the same old sad song and nothing ever changes for the base of the gop. The southern states in general are the poorest decade after decade and yet they vote republican over and over.

Things won't change unless and until the dems take control of the senate along with the white house.
