A country that was build on its system of government, of communication or conversation and compromise is in a real mess. The division between the parties and a great deal of their supporters on both side cannot see beyond the palm vision which guides their hate.
Politicians are supposed to serve the people, work for the good of the country, protect and defend the Constitution. How much of that do we see these days. The right tries to hold on to its conservative positions and the left keeps trying to make radical changes that half the country doesn't want. We used to work and compromise, not anymore.
If Trump wins the left will go nuts again, probably more impeachment nonsense. If he loses you can expect some gloating from the left and some considerable opposition to everything the left throws out by the right.
I'm afraid the only fix for Congress is term limits. At least we get some fresh blood.

I am not sure that will fix the problem, but it’s worth a shot.

If Congress we’re willing to term limit itself it would not need to be term limited.

So long as this hyper partisanship remains, term limits won't really bring about change because the pool of candidates is tainted by the idea that the only way to govern is through sheer dominance in numbers. The only hope is candidates outside of this paradigm take the helm, but that isn't going to happen overnight because the game itself is rigged to keep those kind of candidates out.

I have a proposal: Stop allowing the televising of Congressional hearings. Make it so that it is much more difficult for partisans to get up on their soapboxes or for people aimed at disruption from disturbing the work of compromise and negotiation.

Exactly what else should we compromise? We've compromised our borders. We've compromised state sovereignty. We've compromised our inner cities. We've compromised our churches. We've compromised our manufacturing base. We've compromised our educational system. We're in the process of compromising our police forces and our very right to public safety! What else do you want? When will it be enough "compromise" to satisfy you?

I don't think term limits will solve the problem. We have an opportunity for fresh blood every election cycle. If a Congress critter is reelected, it is because the people of the state like what they are doing. It takes time to get good at legislating, deal making, finding your niche (military/healthcare/immigration/environment) and learning a lot about it. I definitely agree with you, though, about the rest.

Look what the Dems are doing to Susan Collins, Senator from Maine, who is one of the last moderates left. "communication or conversation and compromise" is how she has always worked. She is being vilified now and there is a national effort by the Dems to get her out. They might win a seat, but the Senate will be the loser, imo. I am not a Republican and I don't agree with her decisions a lot, but I have always voted for her for being a hard worker, well informed and open to all ideas, regardless of party. Plus she is ALWAYS civil. There aren't a lot of congress people like her anymore.

Term limits would at least make some changes in the leadership that has been in charge for decades. I always found it comical that Congress felt the need to put limits on the Presidents number of terms but not their own.

The democrats are looking for power, power to change the U.S. from what it is into a socialist, marxist, communist bunch of crap.

I don't agree with the description, but I agree it's a power play, and both parties are equally guilty. It seems like all they do these days.

I don't think Term limits will be enough. I made a blog post here where I put forth the radical idea of getting rid of everyone in congress and starting fresh with people who have never held any legislative office before. As long as there are still people in congress who have served under the current system, they will pass on to the freshman representatives all the BS that's got things so screwed up now.

Congress needs to go back to what it was in the beginning. A non-career position that pays whatever the yearly income is for the average American household, plus travel expenses and an apartment in Washington for those living more than 50 miles from the capitol. We also need to impose new congressional ethics laws. One would be to forbid people in congress from accepting any paid positions from any company or their affiliates who have lobbied congress. Another would be to make it criminal for elected members of congress or members of their staff to make false and/or slanderous public political statements, like Adam Shiff did time and time again for more than 2 years during the Russia/Trump collusion investigation. If you do those things and impose a term limit of 2 - two year terms, or 1 - four year term, we might actually end up with a government that works for the people again.

I know... It's a pipe dream that will never happen, but one can dream.

We don't need term limits. We need smaller districts (which translates to more members of the House)
