Another clear sign the left is just inventing problems. When you choose to name a sports team, the Indians, the Braves, the Seminoles, the Redskins, that is honoring them and their culture and their history. I don't see anyone being upset about MLK blvd in towns and cites, why not? Because it's a honor to have something named after you. On the other hand some liberals want John Wayne Airport renamed, Why? Because they say he shouldn't be honored in that fashion. It's no wonder some people like the democrats, you don't ever have to worry about upholding a moral principal, any ethical standard or even the law in many cases. You can burn it down, tear it down, deface it, interview with the free movement of citizens, it's endless the laws they break while their leaders remain silent. They are careless and thoughtless in the positions that they assume. Never seeming to understand the consequences long term. Whenever you want to find hypocrisy and lack of ethical stands on anything, just look at the democrats and the liberals. They never disappoint.

The problem with 'honoring' individuals with plaques, statues, memorials, and street signs is that individuals are flawed. Instead of people, we should be revering commonly-held ideals: Democracy, freedom, equity, etc. I wish more Christian conservatives realized the hypocrisy of their idolization of graven images.

On offensive team names, it is not my position as a white man to determine what is or isn't offensive to others, particularly those of that group being represented. We should embrace discussion over controversial team names instead of brushing it off (and this is coming from a Blackhawks fan).

How exactly does the term "Redskin" honor Native Americans? You preach about ethics and hypocrisy from your high horse while embracing a deragatory term.

I can understand teams named after tribes as a way of honoring them, but redskins isn't in that category by a long shot.

I have heard some Natives root for the Redskins because it is a team that (in some way) represents them, but I imagine most find it offensive. I know my mom has always seen the Redskins as offensive along with the Seminoles (more because of how fans act than the name), and she is part of that culture a lot more than I am.

the principle issue is why honor confederates in part for being slavers and attempting to destroy the republic to maintain their "possessions"? OTOH get that its getting ridiculous with some of the more insane calls for GW, and other founding fathers.

And I also get that its in right's best interest to lump these disparate calls all together in defense of their racist heroes of the past.

And I'll be few know, for instance, that Columbus never set foot in America and really was a genocidal arse.

Among the perpetually offended, there are some "Native" Americans. Most are as sane as the rest of us. Of course, most of us having been born here are also Native and American so, there's that...

is "Vikings" also a slur? Buccaneers? 49ers? Browns? Simply applying a name to a team hardly seems to be a slur.

...No?...

I suggest you read the article.

The article is okay if rather generalized. When was the last time you heard cultural appropriation being used in a GOOD way, as per the article's mention of the HIDDEN FORTRESS adaptation? In large part, it's used by snowflakes to complain that some creator is "stealing" from other creators or cultures, which is the way that French fool Roland Barthes used it. He might not have been the absolute first to put forth the concept, but he's among the leaders of that particular pack.

Denial is not becoming on you. Redskins is and always has been a racial slur used by whites to denigrate Native Americans. You are either remarkably uninformed or deliberately disingenuous. While you think that Native Americans ought to take in good humor, it does not change reality.

"Redskins" is a slur. It's like Darkie, Slanteye, Spic, etc. You honor no one by using pejorative terms.

Glad I could help you understand such a fundamental concept. Be sure to ask again, if needed.

You are not correct in your statement that "redskin" is and always been a racial slur. You provide no links to anything that backs that up.
I can agree that by todays standard "redskin" is inappropriate. Along with other actions done in sports. For example the chant and tomahawk chop for the Atlanta Braves. Read the NPR article. Do a Google search.

"According to Smithsonian historian Ives Goddard, early historical records indicate that "Redskin" was used as a self-identifier by Native Americans to differentiate between the two races. Goddard found that the first use of the word "redskin" came in 1769, in negotiations between the Piankashaws and Col. John Wilkins. Throughout the 1800s, the word was frequently used by Native Americans as they negotiated with the French and later the Americans. The phrase gained widespread usage among whites when James Fenimore Cooper used it in his 1823 novel The Pioneers. In the book, Cooper has a dying Indian character lament, "There will soon be no red-skin in the country."

I would not be so quick to condemn a person who has a different view regarding the Washington NFL teams name. Growing up I never took it as a slur. Nor do I consider the Chiefs or Braves to be a slur.

Just as "Black" seems to be a very inaccurate descriptor of the skin tones of "Black" people, so "Red" seems to be a very inaccurate descriptor of people said to have "Red" skin tones.

Same with "White", "Yellow" or "Green". the "Little Green Men" seem to be notably more "Grey" than Green when described by folks wearing tin foil hats.. The enraged Space Aliens might invade and conquer us just over that inaccuracy.

I have not seen every human on this planet. Of those people that I have seen, I have NEVER seen any person that is white, black, yellow or red.

The "Olive" skin tones said to be evident on skin of those native to the Mediterranean areas have always confused me. Again, I've never seen an "Olive" colored person.

As a person with genetic roots in Northern Europe, my skin was closer to red than any skin I have ever seen on anyone else after a Summer afternoon spent on a lake in an aluminum canoe.

Regarding particularly the descriptor "Red" as it applies to skin, though, even with THAT sunburn, a scrape that resulted in bleeding STILL allowed the actually red blood to contrast quite well against my comparatively not red skin.

It really makes no difference. If the "Redskins" change their name to "Champions" they will not be Champions any time soon. That name will only be a name and will not negatively impact any actual champion.

The Chiefs will not feel threatened. ;)
