"Our cultural institutions are facing a moment of trial," the letter begins. "Powerful protests for racial and social justice are leading to overdue demands for police reform, along with wider calls for greater equality and inclusion across our society, not least in higher education, journalism, philanthropy, and the arts."
"But this needed reckoning has also intensified a new set of moral attitudes and political commitments that tend to weaken our norms of open debate and toleration of differences in favor of ideological conformity. As we applaud the first development, we also raise our voices against the second."

There’s something rather satisfying about this. These same people sit back and applaud the destruction of anything they disagree with or are offended by (I thought there was no right to not be offended) then I cannot be too bothered to care when the mob comes for Harry Potter.

Old liberalism and a few CINO conservatives find a spine. Not bad, but disappointingly thin. This is not enough. Unless Democratic Party leadership (Biden, et. al.) are willing to call off their dogs (if they can) then this will continue. And like all such movements, will eventually hang its own.

The complete silence from our former Presidents is telling - for various reasons they are keeping their powder dry.

Well things got out of hand in this regard quite some time ago, and I'm not sure what this will actually do. I think in the world of Internet Warriors, the Cancel Culture cometh. It takes a bit of patience and restraint to understand, to accept, and to process how information comes to us in bits and pieces and through the lenses of slants and emotions.

I would hope that we would grow and learn how to use the tech better and how to process information more completely and how to interact with each other. People shouldn't lose their jobs at every little outburst, everyone has bad days. People shouldn't lose their jobs for **** they said 10 years ago, everyone grows. If we don't fix cancel culture, the generations coming up after it are going to rebel against it. It's time for us on whole, as a People, to grow up and begin to hear each other and stop emotionalized, knee-jerk reactions. But we'll see how it goes.

I reviewed the full list of signatories, and most, like Bari Weiss and Gloria Steinem for example, are from the type of backgrounds that once were doing the canceling. Now they may find themselves being run over by the out of control outrage culture they helped create. And I'll say it; the list is primarily white, Jewish, and old. The next generation of cancellers will not make any distinction between them and a Ann Coulter or a Nick Fuentes. Chickens coming home to roost.

Chomsky and others are saying what I have been saying for ever.... Like 5 years... Finally...

And i don't care about their politics... That so many finally realised the totalitarian s*** we have been dealing with is actually bad...Great change... Let us hope it is sustainable

For Biden or Obama to come out at this time would be pointless. Unless a war of words is what they're looking for.

tRUMP is feeding the dissent with his racist speeches. Perhaps he is trying to bait Biden or Obama.
It is best if they say nothing and let tRUMP continue to attack non white people. He is cutting his own throat with trying to amp up a race war. Don't take the bait.

"There’s something rather satisfying about this". Wow.

You really don't listen to people, do you? It's only a small segment that ever wanted to cancel everything. But you did not listen, or told yourself they were lying.
Instead, you absorbed propaganda that lied about what "the left" wanted.

Never mind that the devil is in the details: what act, when, what consequences.

Never mind that whatever it is, it is the result of a "free market."

They only care because some of them are now being, let’s say, scrutinized. They aren’t standing on principle, they just want immunity.

Oh, maybe it’s not everything but it is pretty much everything they generally don’t like.

Right, and mainstream liberals haven't been flirting and playing footsies under the table with the extreme left at the helm of cancel culture such as Antifa, BLM, and the like. Before you come back with something predictable, BLM most definitely ARE a part of cancel culture.

You mean it would be "pointless" because they know they might alienate some of the same folks who will or could vote for Biden. If the democratic establishment, especially Obama, came down hard on this madness then the intimidated and bullied Mayors, businesses, and institutions might have the reassurance that someone has their back other than a weak Trump. But then cynical political calculations for securing power is more important to the Democratic establishment, not to step in and a try a sister soulja moment of integrity.

A transparent excuse for cynical political calculation is dishonest. You can defend their willful indifference to arson, riots, and the endless doxxing and firing of innocents as a means to an end, but you can't pretend the means is anything other that what it is.

People generally tend to become more poignantly aware of an abuser once that abuser has them in their sights. While I share the (unfortunate) desire to scoff, I'd rather have them arguing for classic liberal tolerance of dissenting voices and competing ideas than against them. If they are willing to be the first to stop applauding Stalin, good.

The left loves and developed the cancel culture. They only now have a problem when it targets someone on the left.

There simply is no reason to take tRUMPs bait.

Yes, it could alienate some folks who could vote for Biden. tRUMP is doing a whole lot of alienating those that aren't the core of his base. No reason to stop or help him. He will lose the election all on his own.

Here is from a speech Biden gave last month.

But there is no place for violence.
No place for looting or destroying property or burning churches, or destroying businesses — many of them built by people of color who for the first time were beginning to realize their dreams and build wealth for their families.

That should end this discussion.

It doesn't. A single statement read from a piece of paper, while Biden returns to the bunker, is as sincere as Hillary and Obama once claiming they were against gay marriage.

Where'd you get the "cancel culture" narrative. I saw a letter that basically told the left not to turn into anti-democracy conservatives

The forces of illiberalism are gaining strength throughout the world and have a powerful ally in Donald Trump, who represents a real threat to democracy. But resistance must not be allowed to harden into its own brand of dogma or coercion—which right-wing demagogues are already exploiting.

I see, your conservative masters called it the "cancel culture". You know, if I was you, I wouldnt so eagerly believe what the same liars who told you President Obama was born in kenya, forged BC, wants to kill old people (talk about projection), the vile and disgusting "stand down" lies and that republicans really really really want lower the deficit if not balance the budget. Until you and yours stop listening, they wont stop lying to you.

CP, what happened to you? You used to at least be honest in your misconceptions. Where did the stalin reference come from?

Cancel culture is a right-wing hoax.

Assuming you are honestly mis-reading, I'll explain: there is an old joking reference about how Nobody-Wants-To-Be-The-First-Guy-Who-Stops-Applauding-Stalin (after one of his speeches). I suppose nowadays we would re-write the joke about Kim Jung Un.

The point was that, in that world, insufficient enthusiasm would cause the Revolution to turn on you (and oh how swiftly and lethally it could do so), and so everyone was eager to trip over themselves to make sure that at least they never seemed to be the one who was least enthusiastic for whatever nutbaggery was going on.

My point here in this thread was that, if these folks are willing to incur the wrath of the Jacobins by taking a stand for a principle that I share with them (namely: the classic liberal ideal of valuing a free exchange of ideas), then I consider that a good thing. They are willing to stop applauding when their own side goes too far and abandons important principles. Good for them.

The Fundamentalist Right was willing to do some of its own cancel culture back in the day. This is a bipartisan (because it's a human) failing.
