Don’t get me wrong politics is universally dirty, which is why most people don’t like politicians out of hand, but that does not mean things are equal , even if not the same..

Nukes require an operator after all, so nukes don’t kill people, people do... so Nukes for everyone!!

Pick a conservative talking point and it does not stand up to ANY critical thought.

The left/right, conservative/liberal arguments, debates belong to those who belong to each. What has happened as one party moves further to the left, the other further to the right, they're leaving the average American behind. Or as I like to say, without a political party to call their own.
This is the crux of the problem as I see it. The biggest political faction today isn't Republicans and it isn't Democrats. It's independents which for the most part, in general their politics are somewhere in-between the two major parties. Sure you have some independents where the Democratic Party isn't far left enough or the Republican Party isn't far right enough. But for most, the two major parties have moved too far to the left or right for them. So they deserted the party they use to belong to.
Elections today boils down to who wins independents. Neither party's base is big enough to win it by themselves. In most elections it boils down to which party are independents most angry at. Angry at Trump and the Republicans, independents give the Democrats the house. Angry at Obama and the Democrats, in 2010 independents gave the GOP the house, in 2014 the senate and in 2016 the presidency. Angry at Bush and the Republicans, in 2006 independents gave the democrats both the house and the senate, in 2008 they elected Obama. Get angry at Bill Clinton, in 1994 independents gave the Republicans the house and senate and in 2000 helped elect G.W. Bush. and so it goes.
Look back at the big tent Democratic Party when it had both a conservative and liberal wings along with a ton of moderates. They espoused a moderate liberal or perhaps a moderate progressive agenda. If the Republicans hadn't run Eisenhower, the very popular WWII successful general, I have no doubt the democrats would have held the presidency from 1933 through 1968. As it was with the big tent party the democrats controlled the House of Representatives for 40 straight years until the election of 1994 and for 56 out of 60 years. Not any more, first the Democrats kicked out their conservatives and now are evicting their moderates. The moderate blue dog democrats use to make up a very sizable chunk of the Democratic party, are there any left? Fact is now that the Republicans have controlled the house for 20 out the last 26 years.
The fact is both parties have left moderation behind. The willingness to compromise is gone, the idea of taking little steps forward, a steady movement forward for the good of the nation has been replaced by attempts at gigantic steps which results in all or nothing, usually nothing. No time is taken to get the people on board. This in turn get those independents mad and it's time for a change.
Actually having said all of this, I'm happy the democrats have chosen Joe Biden. He's more or less an old fashioned, moderate Democrat who is willing to work with the other side to get things accomplished and the country moving forward. I look on Joe as a return to sanity. Back to normalcy. Now if we could get some old fashioned senate leaders like Mitchell and Dole, Daschle and Lott who respected each other and were willing to work together, perhaps new speaker of the house in the mold of Tip O'Neal, Carl Albert, Mike McCormick and Sam Rayburn, then perhaps we would have a functioning government.
Back to a time when both major parties had respect for the other and were willing to work together. When both major parties recognized each party's goal was a secure, free and prosperous America. Only their path's differed some. Today, it seems each party thinks the other party is out to destroy America and only their party can save her. Each party thinks the other is this country number one enemy and must be done away with. I've said enough. There's no wonder today that 56% of all Americans view the Democratic negatively or unfavorably. The Democrats are saved only because 61% view the GOP negatively. Only Republicans like their party, only Democrats like theirs. Now independents will continue to grow.
