The War on Thanksgiving

Those, brave, social justice warriors of the right are gearing up to fight and defend Thanksgiving at Trump's and FOX News' request. The evil, liberal hordes have targeted and wish to wage a war on Thanksgiving!

Rise up social justice warriors of the right! Rise up and defend Thanksgiving from...from...from...a bunch of twenty-somethings who have nothing better to do than complain.

I mean seriously. There was never a war on Christmas and there isn't one on Thanksgiving. This is just another "OK, Boomer" moment because you folks on the right have to be mad about...something. So, when Dear Leader Trump seized on a FOX News opinion piece about this, you start getting angry over....a nothing burger. While there are plenty of legitimate things to be angry about out there...you guys are focusing on the burning question of "Happy Holidays!" vs. "Merry Christmas!" and how Starbucks designs their cups, and now...this? Seriously?

I mean, I get it that you want to live in the fantasy world that the Pilgrims and Indians sat together and had a moment together instead of dealing with the historical facts that state otherwise. I get it that you want to believe in the 4th grade fantasy that was taught as opposed to what adults know factually...but that doesn't mean there is a war on Thanksgiving.

Ok, so there's some know-it-all millenial who wants to "cancel" Thanksgiving whereas the vast majority of Americans will celebrate the holiday regardless. But noooooo....you have to get your panties in a twist over a group of millienials who in two years' time will probably be looking up how to cook side dishes. There is no war, there is no issue. But I guess you want to hold onto your anger somehow and this appears to be the cause du jour.

And this is why you get hit with the "OK, Boomer." quip.

We’ve been fighting this war for years by serving lasagna.

Progressives will follow the same fate. Equilibrium will return for a time, as the pendulum swings back the other way.

The last that happened was the revolution in iran

Sure thing? Leftist democrats support giving thanks to God for His blessings on America? Leftists support honoring Christmas celebrations because Christ is the reason for the season? You must be talking about the silent majority of the democrat party, not the loud mouthed leftists.

Well, those things are stupid. TG is when people sit at the table with family they hardly ever see and eat turkey. And Christmas is a good reason to call some of those people to say hello again. God smiles on that stuff. He frowns on pompous bull**** seasonal praise though.

Progressives brought about Prohibition. That didn't last, and Progressives disappeared. The new form will follow the same cycle.

That was just one piece of legislation, arcs address bigger themes

and also given that FDR happened, i wouldn't say progressivism disappeared (which would be impossible since, just like conservatism, its simply a function of human nature)

Prohibition wasn’t progressive. Henry Ford supported it, and he was a fascist like all the Trumpers.

Try again.

Piece of legislation? It was a Constitutional Amendment requiring ratification by 3/4 of the States. That arc changed, and Progressives disappeared as more rational minds prevailed.

This current arc will follow the same path. Somethings will remain, but the elements of restricting Constitutional rights, etc., will not. IMO.

And he didn’t even get it right. :lol:

Lol...the New Deal replaced regressive prohibition and Hoovervilles. Your history lessons are hilarious.

Because it had a high bar to pass and went to our central document does not mean its not a piece of legislation.

The current arc has been going on for nearly 8,000 years now :lol: progressivism will always be around and pushing society forward.

Seems you are a bit confused about the ideology you identify with.

You are trying to connect the march of time and human evolution with a political ideology. That is a false connection.

As a Gen Xer, I just queitely stay out of the line of fire on this one...

The oldest boomers are dying like flies. So, we’ll inherit the earth, eventually. And then we’ll die too. :)

LOL. So you accuse Boomers of getting their panties in a twist over Millennials while you are getting your panties in twist over Boomers? That's richer than Grandma's fruit salad!

Agreed. So it goes. The irony is that in 40+ years our young Millenials will be whining and complaining about the younger generations.

A constitution amendment is by definition a piece of legislation

That is what progressivism essentially is. Its not a function of any particular society but an aspect of human nature. The reason you don't worship Enki is because of people like me.

Now the American expression of progressivism, that still arcs towards justice, but albeit on a smaller scale. For example, we don't have slaves anymore (except for the sex trade unfortunately) or all the other things I already mentioned, all thanks to progressives. I will agree that the prohibition thing was a misstep, but that the price of building things, you make mistakes sometimes.

Seems to me god's blessings on americans didn't help much, the english slaughtered them. The reason for the season is a date picked by man because nobody has any idea of when this jesus person was born and it was easier for the pagans to convert to christianity if god's birthday was around the same time as the yule for pagans. You are however still welcome to believe what you wish however untrue or inaccurate.

As the old saying goes, "Everything has its time". FDR rose to power at the same times as Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin, Tojo, Franco, etc. There are multiple social and technological reasons for this, but it was right for the time. I think that time has passed, but as we see with Putin and, to some extent, in the US, there are those who want to turn back the clock. That won't happen short of a planet-wide catastrophe.

In the end, I agree with you; human society continues to improve as it has done for all of recorded history. Progress. Sometimes that "progress" is two steps forward and one step back, but it's still progress. :)

To everything there is a season,
A time for every purpose under heaven:
A time to be born,
And a time to die;
A time to plant,
And a time to pluck what is planted;
A time to kill,
And a time to heal;
A time to break down,
And a time to build up;

Regression happens. With fundamentalism on the rise in most of the Middle East and homophobia sweeping Eastern Europe, while authoritarianism creeps in here in the US, we are currently in a regressive phase.

Perhaps another dark age (this time, global in scale) is coming. I hope not.

If you are defining Progressivism as "The support for or advocacy of social reform. As a philosophy, it is based on the idea of progress, which asserts that advancements in science, technology, economic development and social organization are vital to the improvement of the human condition.", I agree.

Human beings desire freedom but they often don't desire something they don't know exists. Arab Spring came about directly because of the Internet. Internet Cafes gave a window to the world for Arabs living in squalid, oppressive conditions. Over a few years, after realizing how good others in America and Europe were having it, they wanted it for themselves.

Well, a Constitutional Amendment is more than just "legislation", but I guess we are just splitting hairs.

There is a significant difference between the political ideology contained in "Progressivism" and that of simple human progress.

If you can't admit that, then Progressivism is connected to the atrocities throughout recorded history.

The desire for improved living conditions is probably a large part of what drives this side of human nature tbh. In the world, you have the people saying "what we have right now, this is great and we should not change" and others saying "we can do more and be better". Over time, the second group wins, redefines society. Old social mores fall, new ones are adopted. The previous generation dies and the new generation goes "we achieved this thing and what we have now is great and we should not change" and other groups get left out and go "we can do more and be better".

That second group, fighting for freedom, is where progressivism always starts anew.

Just eat your turkey and enjoy. No need to get angry or upset or throw a fit. What we are complaining about? A day of being thankful? What's wrong with that? We should be thankful every day.
Some among us are looking for a warm place, a jacket, healthy body and mind, some food, clean water, the basic necessities of life, basic freedoms we take for granted.
Count your blessings and be grateful.
