What does conservative ideology mean to you? For example, is it about small government, god/morality, tax cuts, making liberals cry, etc? Give me a break down of the fundamental principles upon which the ideology is based.

Bonus question: Is conservatism the same now as it was in the 1970s, 2000s, or post-2016? How has it changed?

My answer is in two parts:

1) What is currently the most perfectly Socialist country on the planet?

2) Conservatism is the freedom not to live there.

Ok, you deplorable conservative, this did make me laugh water through my nose.

Probably Denmark.

That's the foundation of conservative ideology? To not live in Denmark?

Oddly, Denmark insists that it not a socialist country. Yes, this "conservative" will stay in Texas.

At least you can take comfort in Canada not being chosen as the best model of a socialist nation. ;)

I heard that the great secret was mostly really cold weather separated by some brief warming periods for the bugs to swarm and breed, but that the beer was better. ;)

Here we have summer and February with loads of yankees coming to spend their winters here - some (damn) yankees like it so much that they never leave, but we have great BBQ and breakfast tacos. ;)

I don't see much difference between liberals and conservatives in the US other than which Wall Street companies benefit. The dems and GOP are both right wing parties. One is just a little more right wing than the other and the other is the only option for arm chair progressives.

Iran perhaps.

Yeah, I wouldn't want to live there and I doubt I would be alive long there anyway.

Back when I was younger and an independent conservative, conservatism meant to me a strong economy and foreign policy.

Yes, conservatism of today is radically different...and shameful...than it was a couple of decades ago...one of the reasons why I became a Bluedog Democrat. I don't even see any real conservative values in the Trump administration and supporters. Or for most of the GOP of today. It's about fear, power at all costs, abandoning any pretense of common sense. Back in the 80's and early 90's, at least conservatives had plans to get to where they wanted to go. You may not have agreed with the plans, but at least they were rooted in some semblance of sanity.

Today...it's Trump or nothing. And fear, fear, fear, fear, fear, fear, hate, hate, hate, hate, hate.........

Okay, but it's more socialist than Venezuela, the boogeyman of socialism. So it really depends on what you consider socialist and whether or not you're consistent.

Norway Is Far More Socialist Than Venezuela – People's Policy Project

The first claim here is that Venezuela is socialist because its government spends 40 percent of GDP. By this measure, almost every country in Western and Northern Europe is socialist, including Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Norway, France, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. Even the US government spends 37.7 percent of GDP.

The second claim here is that Venezuela is socialist because the government raised the minimum wage six times in the last year in the face of high inflation. This is initially confusing of course because presumably Stephens believes it was a socialist country before last year. But it is also more fundamentally confusing because lots of countries have minimum wages and adjust them over time based on inflation. The US established a minimum wage under FDR and has adjusted it upwards more than a dozen times since. Some US states even have minimum wages that are indexed to inflation, meaning they get adjusted every year.

The last claim is that Venezuela is socialist because it has worker cooperatives, specifically 100,000 cooperatives employing more than 700,000 workers. The first thing to note here is that 700,000 workers in cooperatives is not that impressive up against a country with a population over 30 million people. But more importantly, the US also has worker cooperatives, most prominently ESOPs. In 2015, there were 14 million US workers in ESOP companies and ESOPs are directly encouraged by the US government via tax breaks.

If government spending of around 40 percent of GDP, a minimum wage, and a small coop sector equals socialism, then Americans live in socialism every single day.

If you don't already know the answer then you shouldn't be posting here.

Sounds like a true socialist.

Conservative ideology is Trump.

conservative ideology is an oxymoron.

Conservative ideology comes down to one thing and one thing only: Hateful selfish spite.

1. I want to pay less taxes = don't wanna help fellow man b/c "I did it myself"
2. I want No Abortions = women should have kids that they don't want b/c my life sucks and I want others to suffer
3. I want All the guns!!! = Don't regulate killing machines b/c I have issues with my penis size and am insecure in my marriage/life
4. I want tough border laws/fear immigrants = this country is changing too much and I don't like it. Keep those people out!
5. Religious Fundamentalism = I'm right and you're wrong, praise jebus! I also used generational biblical cherry picking to back up my hateful spiteful BS and to occasionally predict the end of the world b/c my life sucks that much.
6. Constitution= I scoured far right wing websites to get the arguments I meme blast on facebook, I never actually read the whole constitution or realize that laws get updated with time. It doesn't matter anyway b/c now I support Trump!
7. Fake News = I don't like what I'm hearing about my side, what about the Democrats???
8. Climate Change denialism= I live in the middle of the country where it's constantly flooding, I live in Central Florida where I constantly get hit by hurricanes, I live on the west coast where I get hit by forest fires, I live on farms, on the plains, or in coal mining towns that were not affected by climate change whatsoever. NOPE. Not 'merica's problem! Also I taught my kids to like animals for some dumb reason...
9. Prominent conservative gets accused of sexual harassment = I don't believe women also Bill O'reilly's coming back right?
10. Watching Whiny Fox News talking heads for hours = Someone agrees with me!!!! Wait didn't they tell me to believe this stuff? Oh well someone agrees with me so who cares if my family disowns me!
11. Something gets banned/changed/redefined = This world is changing too much and I don't like it. I'm stubborn!
12. Love/obsessed with the history of America's wars = I like very basic history that just happens to be very violent too. Who cares about the other eras. Nothing interesting happened in them. Plus things were harder to follow.
13. Democrat becomes Republican = They agree w/me now!!!
14. Republican becomes Democrat or says something liberal = traitor!!

I think that about sums up what conservative ideology has become just a bunch of whiny old fools who no longer care about anything but what Fox News tells them to think. Even if they don't practice half of what they preach. I think there's some part of the older generation who feel that they missed out on woodstock and they hate everyone who even resembles a hippie or has hippie-like beliefs. I think that's most of the root of conservative hate. Around dinner conversations with older people they always seem to have such a fondness of Woodstock regardless of if they went or not.
