Florida man who claimed self-defense after shooting man over parking spot sentenced

Man gets into an argument with a woman over a handicap parking lot. He was in the right. But then her boyfriend comes out of store, sees the altercation and immediately pushes this man to the floor. This man pulls out his gun and shoots.

Now this man has been sentenced to 20 years.

And here we see the problem with having a gun. Simple altercations that would usually result in maybe a black eye turn into deadly confrontations. In this case, one man is dead and another will spend 20 years in prison. I bet he never shot a single burglar.

A gun is more likely to shoot you or one of your family members than any burglar. And if for a split second you make a bad judgment and shoot someone, you can end up in prison.

It's a fallacy to generalize from one idiot with a gun as an argument to disarm millions of normal people. On the same day over 100 people used guns defensively and properly, but you didn't hear about them so you assume they don't exist.

If the man had run over the guy who had shoved him in the parking lot would you advocate banning cars/trucks? None of my tools/equipment (including guns) make me commit any crime with them - your blame the tool argument is moronic.

You need a car. It's a necessity. A gun is not.

My argument is pretty straightforward. A gun is more likely to ruin your life than save it.

If this man carried a gun with him for self-defense but it ruined his life. Almost every day some kid shoots himself with a family member's gun. Every day someone shoots themselves with a gun.

I'm just talking about basic probability. There are just far more ways that a gun can do you harm than the ways in which it can help you.

I'm not advocating taking away guns. I'm just arguing that you're better off without a gun. I can think of altercations I've had with random assholes that might have gone badly if I had a gun on me.

I did not see him say one word about banning guns. He is just pointing out the fallacy that they protect you or make you safer. Far more often than not they ruin your life in one way or another. The most common "use" of a weapon in the home is suicide and after that is for felonies. Protection is way down the list of actual uses. Those are the facts as much as you hate to hear them.

Did you know that roughly a third of U.S. homes with children have guns? In fact, nearly 2 million children live with unlocked, loaded guns. Parents may not realize what a serious injury risk a gun in the home is, especially for children.

Even young toddlers are capable of finding unlocked guns in the home, and they are strong enough to pull the trigger. Unintentional shootings happen to children of all ages. At least 285 children got ahold of a gun and inadvertently shot themselves or someone else in 2017. Adolescents, in particular, are at a higher risk for suicide when there is a gun in the home. In fact, a gun in the home is 43 times more likely to be used to kill a friend or family member than a burglar or other criminal.

A gun, like other tools, has legitimate uses and should be stored (and used) responsibly. Obviously, this was not a case of responsible gun use or it would not have resulted in a criminal conviction. The gun could have been used (shown) to end the attack wthout firing a shot - few are stupid enough to continue to attack someone known to be armed.

You're right that it's a tool. Ultimately, the purpose of a gun is to keep you and your family safe. My point is that there are more scenarios in which the gun does you harm than scenarios where it does you good.

If you accidentally walk into the wrong apartment, you're better off not having a concel carry gun. It only takes a split second to ruin a life you spent years building.

So, as a tool intended to keep you safe it fails.

You're right that a perfect person with a gun is probably safer with a gun but none of us are perfect. We can all lose our temper or misjudge a situation or forget to properly secure our weapon or get depressed and pull a trigger.

I never argued that anyone should be disarmed.

I only argued that owning a gun is more likely to do you harm than good.

Google "child shot" and click on News. You'll always find recent stories of a child shot by a gun some parent owned. My own brother almost shot us all with my grandfather's gun when were kids. It's kind of like buying an alligator to protect your property.

What if the guy, pulled a knife and stabbed the man to death, would your thread be another life ruined by knife ownership?

A very small minority of people use their legal gun irresponsibly. I say legal gun because over 60% of homicides are committed by illegal guns.
And yes, there is a small minority of people will use their vehicle as a weapon, a rock as a weapon, a knife as a weapon and their own fists as a weapon. A few years back, a group of kids went polar bear hunting, hit an elderly man with their fist and killed him. So a punch may not end only with a black eye.

The evidence came in against this evil person and he will pay the price in prison. 20 years isn’t enough for him.

So the 80 to 100 million gun owners in the US don't understand that owning a gun is more likely to do them harm than good? If they did, then they wouldn't own any guns, right?

Imagine the level of hubris it takes to claim that you know what's best for 80 million other people regarding a personal decision like gun ownership.

I've said it a million times, but inside every progressive is a tiny Pol Pot just dying to get out.

A car is not a necessity. It’s a convenience.

Mans life was ruined because he was a monumental moron. He deserved his 20 years good riddance (he should of got more)
