Why do conservatives believe lies?

The problem is not that we believe what reinforces our belief system. The problem is the belief system we are reinforcing.

Possible. The thing is what one believes one thinks is true and right. Be that political, religious, no religion or whatever. Hyperbole, exaggerations, half truths, down right lies are told in politics everyday.

Why Are Conservatives More Susceptible to Believing Lies?
An interplay between how all humans think and how conservatives tend to act might actually explain a lot about our current moment.

"Many conservatives have a loose relationship with facts. The right-wing denial of what most people think of as accepted reality starts with political issues: As recently as 2016, 45 percent of Republicans still believed that the Affordable Care Act included “death panels” (it doesn’t). A 2015 poll found that 54 percent of GOP primary voters believed then-President Obama to be a Muslim (…he isn’t).

Then there are the false beliefs about generally accepted science. Only 25 percent of self-proclaimed Trump voters agree that climate change is caused by human activities. Only 43 percent of Republicans overall believe that humans have evolved over time.

And then it gets really crazy. Almost 1 in 6 Trump voters, while simultaneously viewing photographs of the crowds at the 2016 inauguration of Donald Trump and at the 2012 inauguration of Barack Obama , insisted that the former were larger. Sixty-six percent of self-described “very conservative” Americans seriously believe that “Muslims are covertly implementing Sharia law in American courts.” Forty-six percent of Trump voters polled just after the 2016 election either thought that Hillary Clinton was connected to a child sex trafficking ring run out of the basement of a pizzeria in Washington, D.C., or weren’t sure if it was true.

If “truth” is judged on the basis of Enlightenment ideas of reason and more or less objective “evidence,” many of the substantive positions common on the right seem to border on delusional. The left is certainly not immune to credulity (most commonly about the safety of vaccines, GMO foods, and fracking), but the right seems to specialize in it. “Misinformation is currently predominantly a pathology of the right,” concluded a team of scholars from the Harvard Kennedy School and Northeastern University at a February 2017 conference. A BuzzFeed analysis found that three main hyperconservative Facebook pages were roughly twice as likely as three leading ultraliberal Facebook pages to publish fake or misleading information."

Why do conservatives believe lies????? Worse yet why do they continue to post these lies after someone post irrefutable proof that they are lies? This is a common problem on discussion sites like this. So much time has to be spent refuting their lies that they make intelligent discussion impossible. Is that their goal, put an end to a topic they want to suppress ?

Well, your argument fails on the facts.

But then, maybe we believed Barry when he said "you can keep your doctor", "health insurance will be much cheaper", "each family will get....."

Oh look, more lies. It was the right that called Obama the messiah, becuase the right are children and all they have is personal attacks. BEcause the left like Obama, that must mean we thought he was the messiah. THe Obama who was smart, well spoken, took the economy from a near depression to recover and prevent that, who was well respected globally, and 8 years of petty attacks and he came out crystal clean. That must anger you right wingers, havin'g competent dems while you elect idiots and disasters like Bush and Trump

Obama's success irked Trump so much that he ran for President after his birther movement showed him how many Republicans were racists. Trump is still flying that racist flag today.

I dont know anyone who did believe that.
LOL, do you know Barbara Walters?

“He made so many promises,” she said, The Blaze reported. “We thought that he was going to be – I shouldn’t say this at Christmastime, but – the next messiah. And the whole Obamacare or whatever you want to call it, that Affordable Health Act, it just hasn’t worked for him and he’s stumbled around on it, and people feel very disappointed because they expected more.”

LOL That was not even a lie it was a misconception. Obama should have known that insurers are the ones that decide what plans they will keep. The ACA allowed them to keep plans that did not meet ACA requirements but insurers decided otherwise. Meanwhile when is Mexico paying for Trump's wall?

Just look at the gushing praise of Obama you just spewed -sounds lie a hosanna to your MESSIAH. :lamo

THe vast majority of people kept their plans.
Nope.

Sampson Simpson said:
Man, you guys are so dishonest and this is all you have. The onlyh people who didn't get to keep their plans are the handful of people that had completely garbages plans that didn't actually provide health insurance
And yet that vast majority were happy with their previous plans and were forced to give them up. Get your facts straight.

Nope.

The insurers are entirely responsible for what plans are dropped. Stop blaming the ACA. Meanwhile the ACA's benefits are more popular every day. That is only one reason why Trump will lose in 2020. His efforts to destroy the ACA because of his hatred of Obama will be his downfall.

Nice try to defend the undefendable, Obama "Should have known...", yada, yada.

What does the wall have to do with this discussion?

LOL, nice tap dance. Do you serious think that had not ACA been enacted those plans would have been dropped? Posting a theoretical list of what people like or don't like is meaningless.

So, since you're already poking around the Kaiser Family Foundation site check out this page which shows the actual popularity of ACA, not just generic bullet points.

So you admit that considerably more Americans like the ACA than dislike it. And if you break down the ACA's features it is even more popular.

LOL It's easy to be "happy" with healthcare plans when you are healthy. It's when you are not that you see the reality. Cheap plans that don't cover you when you are sick are rip-offs.

You brought up lying Presidents. Trump is the king of liars. Your one example of Obama's untruths is not even a lie. The ACA was written to allow insurers to keep non-conforming plans but THEY decided not to do that. So they are the ones to blame.

Rush Limbaugh first called President Obama the Messiah in 2009 shortly after his inauguration when the stimulus package was being debated. Throughout the presidents 8 years Mr. Limbaugh regularly called the president "The Anointed One", "The Messiah", "The one appointed by God". "His worship".

Barbara Walters used the term Messiah in talking about President Obamas promises in 2013. Ms Walters was not the originator of the phrase. Democrats did not believe President Obama was a Messiah. Democrats did not use the phrase to describe President Obama. It was a term originated and used derisively for 8 years by Republicans.

The fact that conservatives believe that Democrats called President Obama the Messiah is just another example of conservatives knowing something is untrue and posting it anyway as the truth. Which is what this thread is about. Why do conservatives do that?

Uh, that was in both sickness and health.

Bordering on 50% is hardly "considerably more".

Yes the disinformation campaign from the right has done a good job confusing people about the ACA. That's why if you ask about specific parts of the act you get 80% approval for much of it.

Messianic refers to the way the leftist press treated those they were supposed to hold accountable and instead gleefully joined the party.

Literally...

Top Mueller Attorney Attended Hillary’s Election Night Party

If you go to Kentucky and ask the general population about Obamacare; they hate it. If you ask them about the ACA they love it.

Yes, after 8 years of President Bush's sometimes hilarious mangling of English, a legacy entrance into Yale, an insane war of choice and a burst bubble of an economy it is not gushing praise to express relief that President Obama was different.
