I can't tell yet from this video if I would vote for him. I like the idea of a gay president, because gay people have to overcome extra challenges. I also like the fact that he was in the navy, proving that he was willing to actually do something for his country.

What I don't like is that, to me, he talks like someone in an infomercial. He does not sound spontaneous or genuine, to me.

The only thing he mentioned that he would do is Medicare for all. Which I think is a bad idea. I know that something has to be done about healthcare, but I do not think that would work.

He's a good-looking young guy and seems smart. And he's the opposite of Trump in many ways. But I trust Trump, crazy as he sometimes seems, more than I trust this guy. And I wanted to like him. I really would like to have a president that everyone loves. But sadly no, this interview does not give me hope.

Voting for someone because they are gay, black, female...(basically anything but white male) gave us Obama and damn near Hagdabeasty. It gave us a 29 yo bartender/communist to congress. Granted, OP i know you did not say that was the only possible reason.

I wanted to like him, but so far as I can tell the man, while obviously smart, by and large offers nothing but empty platitudes thus far. Even with respect to the policy points he seems to stand for, such as MFA, he's been frustratingly vacillating and indecisive; I assume this is because he doesn't want to get pinned down on anything while still courting party progressives.

I just meant his being gay is not a negative, and it's a slight plus. His having been in the navy is a big plus, and gives him a big advantage over Trump. There are things I like about Trump, but his sleazing out of military service is not one of them.

So far I have no idea if I would vote for Buttigieg, just starting to think about it. There is plenty of time.

This interview really didn't go into depth in anything. I have seen some others. I don't like the progressive ideology, but if someone seemed sane and dependable I would consider hoping they become president.

It is almost impossible that I will hope he wins. I just like the gay thing and the military thing. And a whole lot of other Americans will like that.

Fair enough, but i dont think sexuality should be a qualification. So he is gay, so what? How does that translate to leadership qualities? So he may have faced some bigotry. As a Trump supporter posting on internet forums, so have I, but i will be the first to tell you, i should never be considered for office.

No, being gay does not make someone presidential. I just happen to sympathize with gays because I have a gay relative. My relative tried very hard to be straight, and so did Buttigieg. A lot of American liberals will feel that gays have suffered so much, it would be nice if a gay guy becomes president. Same reason liberals wanted a black or woman president.

I agree sex or race is a stupid reason to vote for someone. Just saying it gives him an advantage, among liberals. Not that I'm a liberal in general, but I am in certain things.

But again, what I do not trust about him is his infomercial way of speaking.

Of course being gay has nothing to do with how good of a President he would be. But it probably will be a benefit for him in the Democratic primaries where identity politics has at least some effect.

From what I have seen I like the guy. I would certainly vote for him over Trump but I don't know yet as far as the primaries. I don't really start researching candidates in depth until near debate time.

I can understand liking the guy, especially if you happen to be a Democrat. I am trying to forget about political labels, and just try to look at him as a possible president. I don't like the way he talks, at least in this interview with Rachel. I can't stand how she talks. None of this is intellectual, just gut feeling reactions to his informercial way of speaking. It makes me feel like this guy just wants to be president.

I like a lot about Mayor Pete, most notably that he's very intelligent, which our current POTUS isn't, not even remotely so. Frankly, from what I've learned thus far, I find his character superlative enough that I don't care what be his policy positions. If he be the nominee, I will vote FOR him, which isn't what I did in 2016 when I voted for Hillary because Trump struck me as too reprehensible to condone.

Note:
I'm a "character is 95% of what matters in choosing leaders" guy. I have my policy preferences, but whether a POTUS shares them is of no matter if I have no objections with their character.

Would you please explain what exactly you mean by "the way he talks?" Do you not like his accent, cadence, enunciation, etc?

It caught my attention to. It made him sound a big like a progressive. Why is his sexual oreintation even a consideration? Next you thing you know anyone who does not like him will be accussed of being homophobic

Is there anyone you would not vote for over Trump?

Context matters

Theres a lot i dont like about him.
1. His ideological and mine are not aligned
2. The vindictive tone he has gone after pence with, without good resson, is another turn off

Ted Nugent and Kanye West. :)

But seriously, there really aren't many people I wouldn't chose over Trump. And that was not the case before he took office. I voted third party in the last election, which is normal for me. But after a couple years of Trump I know that in 2020, as unappealing as it may be, I will almost certainly vote for whomever the Dems nominate.

If you have ever heard an infomercial, that's how I think he sounds. It sounds scripted and insincere, like he is selling something (himself). That is not a person I can trust to care about anyone besides himself.

When someone is speaking from their heart, it sounds very different. Now, there are probably liars who are good enough actors to sound sincere. So you can't necessarily trust everyone who sounds sincere. Well, you can't really trust anyone until you have known them 50 or so years. And even then.

As for intelligence -- being intelligent and highly educated in no way guarantees are person will have common sense or empathy or good intuition. Just the opposite, I think. So I am not excited by a candidate being highly intelligent. That applies to AOC also.

I settle for capable, regardless of race, gender, sexuality.

I don't like identity politics either. But it is nice to see someone who has overcome the obstacle of their identity. Being black or gay makes your life harder. Being female makes your life harder if you want a non-traditional career. Some people manage to overcome that, instead of using it as an excuse.

On the other hand, it's getting so that being black, gay or female is a big advantage with progressive voters. That's what conservatives don't like, and I don't like it either.

Obama may have benefitted from being black, even though he was not a typical disadvantaged American black. Buttigieg probably is benefitting from being gay, among young progressives.

I honestly can't imagine taking somebody's race, ethnicity, gender or sexual orientation into account when trying to decide who to vote for.

Well maybe you can't see it, but it's very important to many, maybe even most, voters. I knew a lot of women who loved Hillary because she's a woman. I'm sure lots of blacks loved Obama because he is black.

Not everyone thinks deeply or looks below the surface.

Imo the way to evolve away from bigotry is by not looking at things like sexual oreintation. Saying he should get a chance because in the past he would not of is not getting past bigotry its just changing the face it wears
