Romney Plays The Long Game In A GOP Civil War

That many Democrats now love Romney is the best example of the lack of integrity of those Democrats.

It has nothing to do with "integrity." Trump reminds people of the positives about Romney. I never disliked Romney, but I like Obama more. Same with McCain.

No matter which way you cut it, if Romney runs against Trump as an Independent, the Democrats WILL win.

That said, I would love it if the GOP started leaning more toward Romney than Trump. I’d almost be willing to take 10 years of a Romney Presidency if it meant getting rid of Trump today. And yes, I know a person can only be President 8 years.

I think a lot of liberals would be able to put up with a romney presidency. We just can't continue with the psychopathic, crooked and gobsmacking STUPID trump for much longer. Only the far far far right like trump. The rest of the world DESPISE the miserable rotten *******

True, under certain unusual circumstances it can happen.

Just got to remember to not pardon the outgoing president. Although... in this day and age who knows.

I remember when a journalist asked Romney why none of his adult sons had enlisted to serve in the military. He said his sons were more patriotic than the troops because they had all given up their jobs to help him in his presidential campaign.

The only reason a moderate republican would admire romney is because he is only half as bad as trump is.

back then, Republican standard bearers could speak in full sentences that didn't include superlatives.

Romney could play this well by appearing as the reasonable choice compared to a more divisive contender; it's the best approach if looking to appeal to more voters than those in your base. He's a politician who can be reasonable enough to draw in the folks in the middle.

I think Romney will be the new Jeff Flake....a Senator who talks a big game about his independence and then caves at the last minute to whatever line McConnell jams down his throat.

Romney is said to seek three key positions in Senate: The Foreign Relations Committee. The Finance Committee. The Commerce Committee. Romney is set to replace retiring Orin Hatch as President Pro Tempore of the Senate. Who just so happens to be third in the line of succession. Paul Ryan is retiring and Romney pretty much can hand pick the speaker position. Romney also flirted with the Secretary of State job which actually seems to be a less powerful position than what he has now.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is already starting his re-election campaign for 2020, but Romney is eyeing the job of Senate Majority Leader for himself as well! He is realizing his dreams of remaking the Republican Party in his image and he has plans in place long after Trump is gone. No matter if it's 2020 or even earlier.

Romney as Pro Tem? *L* Maybe if he's still a Senator in 30 years... it could be his 100th Birthday present. Chuck Grassley is going to be the new President Pro Tempore... and probably Finance Committee Chairman too - there's no way in hell he's going to want a show-boater like Romney on Finance. Same with Jim Risch over on Foreign Relations. No committee chairman is going to want to be outshone by some freshman Senator... no matter how substantial his resume is. I think Romney would be a good fit for Commerce... but there he's going to have to deal with John Thune... and where it comes to Senate tactics, Thune can run circles around Romney. By all rights, it should be Thune who is the Senate Majority Leader - in any case, I think it'll be Thune who takes over from McConnell when the time comes to make a change... voluntarily or not.

Anyway, as far as Romney goes... welcome to the NFL, rookie.

How will Romney...as a Senator...pretty much hand pick the Speaker of the House position?

That was my thought. Especially when the Speaker is going to be a Democrat, and Republicans have already chosen Kevin McCarthy as their minority leader.

I wouldn't vote for Romney if he ran for President, no matter how much he prepared.

I'd vote for Ben Sasse, freshman Senator from Nebraska.

He really impressed me with this speech:

I like Sasse a lot, but I haven't seen him actually accomplish much. I would vote for either of them, though I'd prefer some more experience out of Sasse than "College President And Philosopher-Senator".

Truth be told, I regret voting for Obama the second time around.... what did he even attempt to get passed in his second term? Looking back on it now, it seems like 4 wasted years. At least if Romney had been elected, he could have worked with Congress to adapt the Affordable Care Act into something along the lines of the program he passed in Massachusetts.

That is exactly how Romney was defined by Democrats when he ran.

It is simple for most Democrats. They love anyone who attacks Trump. There have been no exceptions. Look how much Democrats stopped hating and started loving Comey, though it was Comey more than anyone else who made Trump president by tearing down Hilary for no reason but to do so worse than if she had been indicted. At least she could have defended against that.

I have always admired Mitt Romney for his brilliance. I voted for the man multiple times over a period of years and would do so again in a heartbeat. Mitt Romney famously said that Russia was our next geopolitical foe and everyone even Obama laughed in his face! Four years later we have a President that is owned by ex-KGB strongmen and the Russian Mob. Romney also seemingly predicted in his 47% comment how partisan the country was.

I best describe Romney as the guy in Washington who knows everything about everyone with no power to do anything about it. That's about to change. Romney has pretty much stayed out of the spotlight while securing his election to the Utah Senate. Crushing any chance of a blue wave there. He has 90+% approval in the state. Plus he fared way better than Mia Love. He won the election with 72 percent of the vote. Love lost by nearly 700 votes.

Analysts are confused by Romney's entry into becoming a freshman senator, but one thing most people agree on is that if Trump doesn't run in 2020, Romney will have built up enough of the Republican Party to take it back and be almost undefeatable in a primary. Many believe that Romney will have a hard time beating Trump, but it's smooth sailing to the Presidency if Trump doesn't run.

Another option for Romney could be that if Trump does run, and he does run. He could re-launch NeverTrump efforts and form his own political party, and run as an independent with a number of moderate Republicans at his side. He certainly has the finances to do this, the sanity, and the political muscle.

Romney's rise to President all depends on what happens with the Mueller report and who goes down in the Republican Party. With dozens of sealed indictments and almost no high profile Republican targeted yet, you know senators and house members long suspected of having Russian ties are going down. Romney knows more than we do. That is almost a certainty. He sees an in and he is taking it.

Trump's power past 2020, rests on his current few people remaining, remaining in power and not going to jail. In near or far future investigations which is almost impossible to escape from. Trump has made almost no friends in the Republican Party and does little in the way of basic political deal-making that is required to get things done. With many conservative republicans and others saying he doesn't have the capacity to think that way. He's too reactive and only cares about loyalty without giving it. Romney is a completely different political animal.

Let the games begin!

I'm not a guy who much agreeys with Romney politically, but I respect him for caring. I think he's a decent man, even if I think he's wrong about most everything. Beats hell out of what we have now. Kasich though, now there's one reminds me of guys I might even vote for with an R by there name, like our late Sanator/governor Dan Evans. He was one of that dying breed of Republicans who didn't care which side of the aisle a good idea came from, if it was good, he'd work togther to make it happen, sorely lacking in today's GOP, and, of course reflected back.

Did you vote for Romney in 2012?

I did. Romney had a far more impressive resume than Obama. Smarter and more accomplished too
I liked romney but didnt vote for him. I was going to until he botched the lead at the debates. It exposed his weakness. He would of been eaten alive on the world stage and even domestically by the democrats. He lacks the ruthlessness of obama and Trump. Its ugly but its a prequisite for being potus.

I voted johnson. He best represented my views.

The job of President pro Tempore of the Senate is normally given to the majority party Senator with the longest years of service in that body. So what claim would Romney have in that area?

True

And many of those comittees he would like to be seated at our seniority based. Even with the name recognition and his experience, Romney will still be the new guy on the block.

I like Kasich, but his views on Cannabis are truly prehistoric. The man still adheres to the gateway theory !!

Exactly! I didn't vote in 2008. McCain & Obama were both for a path for citizen ship for illegals & were big global warming
enthusiasts. Obama had actually better foreign policy notions than the war-monger but I could not pull the lever for a
Dem so I didn't bother voting.

I was all set to vote for Romney but as you say he 'he botched the lead at the debates. It exposed his weakness' Candy Crowley
backed up BO on an important issue & Romney stood there stunned in the spotlight, it was embarrassing. I was almost glad when
BO whupped him soundly! Stayed home again. Imagine finding yourself in a foxhole with Romney when the enemy is attacking,

Seeing with astonishment Biden toying with Ryan in the VP debate seconded my notion not to participate
