Even before Trump was elected-- apparently before the majority of the country even thought he'd be elected-- some leak-source got hold of the Access Hollywood tape and released it. This was clearly not only an "October surprise," but an attempt to provide any voter who doubted it with proof that Trump was a vile sexist.
The video provided grist for many mills of journalists and comedians, but as far as I can tell, it failed to create widespread disgust toward Trump, except among those who already hated him.
The Mueller probe may or may not provide a "smoking gun" capable of bringing about Trump's impeachment. So far, though, this outcome seems confined to the Left's wish-dreams.
The Ford allegation is an attempt to manufacture a "smoking gun" aimed at the character of Brett Kavanaugh, but it seems predicated not on actual evidence but on something akin to the Moscow "show trials."
There were a lot of earlier attempts to ruin political figures or celebrities with scandals, with the most successful being the outrage against Donald Sterling-- IMO the most successful "smoking gun" of recent years. But I'm not sure there was as much of a concerted scandal-seeking mania PRIOR to the successful manipulation of public opinion of Sterling in 2014.
I wonder if the Lefties looked at Sterling's widespread condemnation and said, "Yeah, let's see if we can drum more of THAT."
