Trump critic Sen. Sasse says he's considering leaving Republican Party, calls WH a ‘reality show’

Hopefully those like Ben Sasse will pick up the pieces of the GOP after Trump blows it up. I expect very few leftists to cheer Sasse's courage. Sasse remains a principled conservative and would never, ever consider lending ANY support to the Democrats.

Right, he's a loyal Republican who always, 100% of the time, votes with the Republican party and Trump when it counts. What courage exactly has he shown that I'm supposed to cheer?

Yeah, but I have two minds about this. A lot of left-wing people misconstrue independence for siding with Democrats on at least one of their top priorities. That's not the way it works. Conservatives were not going to expect Elizabeth Warren (or perhaps in current circumstances, Bernie Sanders), who was up until 2 years ago a separate force from the Democratic Party of Obama-Clinton to suddenly abandon the Democratic Party domestic policy platform and to start conversing with Mitch McConnell about putting pressure on (then) President Obama to accept weakening the ACA. What I would like, however, is Sasse to be bolder than the prairie nice guy conservative schtick and, for instance, put pressure on leadership to bring forward legislation on protecting Mueller.

OK, but when you vote in lockstep with the GOP and in lockstep with Trump, what exactly is his problem with Trump or the GOP, other than tone, which in part got them the WH and a majority in the House and Senate and puts them in a position to jam through their agenda? Why would someone who votes like that leave the party, and if they did, who the hell would care? He's a 100% of the time vote with the GOP when it counts guy, who is enjoying the fruits of the party he says he wants to leave, and the benefits of having Trump sitting there in the WH who will sign anything the GOP delivers to his desk.

Besides, he's the same kind of fake fiscal conservative that like to preen for the cameras but don't give a damn about anything except delivering tax cuts to their donor base, then take a bunch of meaningless votes against spending and debt ceilings that are the cost of the tax cuts. I don't see the political courage there. Again, this was Sen. Corker's same strategy, but at least he threw in the towel on another term, so that's an ACTUAL step requiring some courage or unwillingness to play along with strategy he found intolerable.

Your last bolded sentence point is sort of my point. What has he DONE that matters? Nothing that I can see. I don't care what he thinks about in the morning, any more than I'd care about the feelings of some CFO of a pay-day lending company who has "serious concerns" that he shares with friends and family about how the company makes money but happily cashes his fat bonus checks every quarter.

As one of the left,I found Mr.Sasse's remarks to be spot on and quite refreshing. Libs and dems both should be able to put party bias aside when anyone speaks the truth and has the country's best interests at heart. If he's just giving lip service, then shame on him.

What he said was fine, but it's just talk at this point. He votes with Trump and the GOP nearly 100% of the time, and 100% of the time when it counts, and hasn't that I've seen used his leverage as a potential spoiler to demand....anything from the GOP.

What's kind of remarkable is the GOP has sunk to such low levels that e.g. calling out Trump for openly criticizing the DoJ for handing down indictments of corrupt Republicans, and Trump explicitly linking his criticism of DoJ to upcoming elections, is seen as an act of courage, when it ought to be the bare minimum expected.

that's hilarious. Will is a standard statist republican. He's a gun banner BTW.

You people post as if you are from outer space.

Why not just skip the interim steps and call him a communist lover now?

Trump and his minority. Can't live with them, you cant get ride of them.

This is a real problem.

rather than waste space with non responsive nonsense, try to refute what I stated.

Now that IS hilarious. George Will: "gun banner".
I've no doubt you have a link or links to support your argument but I am dying to see the argument.

Not to hijack the thread or anything, but I'm considering learning another language and getting rock solid abs.

Mi espanol es sufficiente por conversación simple ahora pero no progresso en mi abdomenales!
(My Spanish is good enough for simple conversations but I've made no progress with my abdominals)

And I've been back in Los Angeles for six years now!

Uh....not really.

Standard in many ways, but statist not so much.

Another term thought to be "radioactive".....STATIST!!!

Ooooooooooo!!! Everyone make a sharp intake of breath and take forty steps back and shudder in abject fear, STATISTS are approaching!!!

memefacescared2-panel-NOPE.jpg

(facepalm) Could you people sound any more fanatical?
Your buzz word doesn't have any power anymore.

This is the year 2018 - not 1918, not 1818, not 1718...some semblance of administrative state is a reality, we do not live in crude cabins in the woods anymore under lamps that burn animal fat.

Well, an editorial from 27 years ago is compelling evidence he is in 2018 a "gun banner." Prior to that, Ronald Reagan was also a famous "gun banner."

You beat me to it, Jasper! :applaud
I wished I'd seen that back in 1991, it would have made Cheerios (or hot coffee or scrambled eggs) come squirting out of my nose. Looking at it now, it seems to resemble a thought-exercise.

"I, George Will, being of sound mind and body, and enjoying a reputation as a staunch conservative icon, shall now proceed to screw with everyone in a 4000 mile radius by doing a 180 on a sacred conservative position.
Show me what badasses you Righties are by challenging me and forcing me to recant. I'll tie one boxing glove behind my back."

And again, seeing "statists" under your bed and around every corner, not a healthy thing. In fact, it's an obsession, methinks.
I want the public schools to work, freeways to not have potholes and polluters to clean up their act, that doesn't mean I am embracing Big Brother.

And by the way, every last one of you staunch Righties SHOULD have nightmares about one of the things Will said, because truly, whenever ANYTHING causes affluent upper middle class kids to start "dying in such epidemic numbers," banning anything and everything DOES become "a national imperative." almost exclusively from the Right.

gun rights he's hard core statist

Not exactly. He supports the second amendment. He just doesn't believe that criminals and crazies should have guns, and supports expanded background checks. That is exactly what I believe. I own an AR-15, and if I thought he was going to vote to take it away, he would not have my support at all. He isn't coming after my guns, or yours either. He just wants a little common sense. I completely agree.
