Democrats Roll Out Anti-Corruption Message for 2018

5/21/18

As part of their midterm pitch to voters, congressional Democrats are unveiling a series of policy proposals Monday aimed at cleaning up a "culture of corruption" in Washington. In other words: Drain the swamp. The party says it isn't stealing the slogan and sentiment that helped propel Donald Trump to the White House. Instead, Democrats are returning to an anti-corruption message that helped win back the House of Representatives in 2006 against the backdrop of scandals involving lobbyist Jack Abramoff and lawmakers Tom DeLay and Mark Foley. A decade later, Trump seized on a similar theme, directing voter ire at Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton along with lawmakers of both parties in the nation's capital. And now, with Michael Cohen, Scott Pruitt and others in Trump's orbit under scrutiny, Democrats believe they have a compelling case to make against the current administration and Republicans in Congress. "The American people are sick of getting a raw deal from Washington and they’re tired of broken promises to ‘drain the swamp,’” reads a memo from Democratic leaders outlining various government reform proposals. "It’s an endless cycle taken to a completely unprecedented level under President Trump, demonstrating a blatant disregard for the laws and norms in place to prevent public corruption."

The new reform component is aimed at the Trump administration and includes policy proposals to rein in the influence of lobbyists and high-powered donors and to beef up related ethics laws. Included are calls to pass campaign reform laws designed to empower small donors, and to pass a constitutional amendment to overturn the Citizens United Supreme Court decision on political spending. In addition, the plan features proposals aimed at voting rights, safeguarding election infrastructure, and ending party-directed redistricting. "President Trump promised to fight for the forgotten American, yet Republican-controlled Washington continues business as usual, rewarding the wealthy, privileged and well-connected at the expense of middle class and working families," the Democratic memo reads. "Look no further than Congressional Republicans’ and President Trump’s agenda: billions in tax cuts for the rich, massive giveaways to special interests and the full-frontal corporate assault on workers’ rights and consumers’ protections." "Americans find Trump’s unconventional nature most concerning when the behavior is viewed as abusing power and ignoring standards that protect against conflicts of interest," read the polling memo. In Monday's messaging roll-out, congressional Democrats argue that while corruption appears to be a perpetual theme in Washington, it has been taken to an "unprecedented level under President Trump, demonstrating a blatant disregard for the laws and norms in place to prevent public corruption."

Amen. Donald Trump, his Cabinet, his administration, and the 115th GOP majority Congress have taken Washington-corruption to a whole other level.

And most amazing of all, they are quite open and blatant about it.

Damn. I think they may have a winner here!

As long as they walk the walk, they might get some real mileage out of this.

Interesting. I guess time will tell if it works. On the surface, I think for them it looks good. Especially the tax cuts argument.

I know some people are giddy with excitement over the $7 increase in their paychecks every two weeks and all that, but I wonder how some people will feel when corporations release their quarterly earnings right around election time, and they see them increasing their profits by billions.

By the way, for the record and in full disclosure, I supported the Citizens United decision. I'm just not sure the net results are what I expected them to be.

That is questionable part.

You know, I was just thinking how this message is essentially another version of "drain the swamp", though a harder hitting one.

I think the Dems need to go directly at Trump on middle-class workers and worker protection. The owned that territory before, and as we see from the new owner in the White House, it's a successful plank.

I really think it's time for the Dems to run straight at Trump's supposed "strengths", exposing them for the bull**** they are. Proving Trump is bull****, should be priority #1 for them. Run straight at him, I say!

You know...I'm thinking the **** is going to hit the fan before they can make good use of this pitch. That **** is going to splash all over the Democrats.

The only thing that might be able save them is if they include Obama and his people with their nonsense about Trump. Somehow I don't think they'll be able to throw Obama, Hillary, Kerry and all the rest under the bus. But who knows? The ends justify the means, right?

it is up to us voters to keep democrats walking the walk

When has either party walked THIS walk. How about never. Slogan probably came from a "consultant" paid in the millions.

I am finding more and more that these "political" debates are boring. Partisan B.S. going nowhere.

Well, they did a pretty good job expelling the #MeToo transgressors, whereas the GOP seem to either embrace them or stick with them until the bitter end.

So in general I think Dems may have the upper hand in this, besides just that above.

On the surface it's a good platform with a positive message but the devil will be in the details. If they try bludgeon the gop over the head with it by trying to say that's it's all on the right and they on the left are squeaky clean. That may blow up in their faces.

People gravitate to positive messages like hope and change, make america great again, etc... mudslinging only goes so far.

Well there's hope but both parties have a huge precedent against doing what they say they're going to do.

The problem is you need proposals which will help middle-class workers. Do you really think that the party of open borders, and against trying to fix our trade deals is working for middle-class workers.

Cheap slogans are just that. Do you think that Pelosi's chant for HIGHER taxes will bring more factory jobs to America? Really expected a better response from you.

With the possible exception of Bill & Hillary, and Hillary's was greatly fabricated, I see no reason to dump those you've mentioned.

In relation to Trump, Obama would be a poster child for anti-coruption, in my opinion.

I think the Dems would go far running as the party of values, though they would have spin their abortion stance as that of valuing a women's freedom. It might be doable, if they run on integrity values, and family values in the context of the newly acquired SCOTUS definitions of same-sex marriage.

The democrats are likely going to get a surprise on this come the fall. The image is that the Clintons are dirty and therefore the democratic party is dirty; 'lock her up'. I believe those sentiments run much deeper than most people believe with the exception of Trump.

From what I see, "corruption" isn't a direct issue and by raising it directly remind everyone the Clinton Foundation...."blah, blah, blah..." It's simply too soon to expect the hate for Hillary to fade. (btw - the only way I would vote democrat this fall would be if the entire Clinton camp was legally barred from participating.

Having said that, I believe it is a mistake to think this is an aberration in American politics; it is the new order of American politics: isolationist, everyone for themselves, and a tearing up of all things international. Not only is NAFTA done, so is NATO, NORAD etc. The new, underlying message in European politics is "we're on our own'. That same sentiment is being expressed in the halls of Parliament in Canada and the capital of Mexico. One thing I have always known is that the various civil services of countries usually have a very accurate read on things. In this case they are praying for the best but planning for the worst.

The world we knew of Americans in white hats riding in to save the day are gone forever, what lies ahead is animosity and suspicion as the administration undermines trust in everything the way they have destroyed trust in American institutions.

I'm glad I'm not young.

and the Republican party is the party of Glitz, gilded facades, and bottomless corporate greed.

Yep. It's probably going to turn into a mud-slinging contest.

You may change your opinion when the indictments for Obama officials start coming.

Trump got elected on a platform of cracking down on illegal immigration, cutting taxes, boosting the economy, increasing jobs, bringing jobs back to America, and cutting regulations. And he's doing a fine job. That's not corruption, that's being true to one's word.

Yep. It's probably going to turn into a mud-slinging contest.

Turn into?

What do you call what Trump has been doing? He has gone out of his way to undermine everything and anything, now he's created a new boogie man, he was "infiltrated" during the campaign.

They won't find any evidence and he will respond by saying they didn't find any because they are corrupt. His slimy followers are already planting images of democrats going to jail. 17 people charged in the Mueller investigation and it's a 'witch hunt', Trump's paranoia erupts and the nation will have to stop while he gets hi way.

Baby Driver

And you are right. The Dems have got to come around to supporting a secure border.

If I were them, I'd make a run at Trump and the GOP to close the border in exchange for DACA passage. Those are both winners, for the majority of the country. And "secure border" doesn't necessarily mean "a wall", though it may.

I have no idea why the Dems won't get behind a secure border, because they really need to to. A secure border is a separate issue from other immigration policy, but it is something I suspect nearly all American's agree upon.

let me run by you quote from a game: it is from a artist who takes ideas from his art pupils and discards the students when they are no longer of any use to him. he justifed the act with this quote
Livestock are killed for their hide and meat! this is no different you fool!

basicly the art teacher sees his students as nothing but tools.

the mindset of the republican party is the same as that artist: they consider the american people to be expendable tools used to obtain higher office.

Yeah, but now I suspect it will no longer be asymmetrical slinging. The Dems will be getting into the thick of it.
