Schumer on Government Shutdown in 2013. Hypocrisy much?

You mean citizen Trump, the same man no one took seriously back then, much less when he ran for President himself in 2016?

The same Trump everyone acknowledges had no experience in government? Whom even his own supporters acknowledged to be a "talk first think later" salesman?

You compare him to Senator Schumer who was a serving Senator back in 2013 with years of political experience under his belt?

You can't have your cake and eat it too. Either Trump is schlub novice who should never have been elected...or he is a shrewd politician who knows what he is doing.

Take your pick. :coffeepap:

You seem to be implying that a 67 year old man would undergo such serious growth that at 71 he should not be responsible for what he claimed earlier.
That he was a blowhard then, but now he is a serious player? OK

Trump is sitting in that Oval Office because a whole lot of (won't call them dumb asses, but) people thought he was the ART of THE DEAL...the supreme negotiator...you might have thought that yourself.

So if it is your belief that Trump knows what he is doing by closing down the government (which he stated prior to this was an excellent idea!) than stand by that..and skip this sad attempt to put it on Schumer.

Oh but you expect the Dems to roll over and just give republicans and trump everything?

Of course, not. The demorats only expect that to happen when they hold the majority. The country actually expects the majority party to enact their policies but if to do so requires a supermajority in the Senate (the source of PPACA) then maybe we should try to arrange that.

I found this video of Chuck Schumer commenting on the Republican-led government shutdown over the budget in 2013.

Note what he says at 2:30...

"We want to negotiate but without a gun to our head... We could do the same thing on immigration. We believe strongly on immigration reform. We could say we're shutting down the government. We're not gonna raise the debt ceiling until you pass immigration reform. It would be governmental chaos...the whole full faith and credit in the U.S. currency goes down the drain..."

He was talking about Republican opposition to Obamacare being tied to the spending bill, which the Democrats led by Schumer in the Senate claimed was tying a political issue to a spending bill.

Now he and the Democrats are doing exactly what he said would create the kind of "governmental chaos" he opposed back in 2013.

What happened to not negotiating with a gun to someone's head? Oh, yeah this is different somehow.

I can't wait to hear the progressive-left members of the Forum try to argue shutting down the government over DACA is different. Hard to do when Schumer made that very point and stated it would be "government chaos...the whole faith and credit in the U.S. currency goes down the drain." Meaning no one should do it, as spending bills and unrelated partisan political issues don't mix.

In 2013, Trump said a government shutdown was failure of leadership from the top.

I guess that was also different....

Notice how they are all liars and hypocrites, because this is America @ 2018 where the ends justify the means, where no one has any use for either morality nor civility except in the propaganda sold to the ignorant chumps.

You can thank Trump for that. You can't expect honor and civility from one side and not the other.

Ad hominin against the person who posted. No response to the facts in the post. Typical.

Feckless Trump supporter complaining that I pointed out how much of a hypocrite Trump is. Typical.

Trump in 2013 told everyone on Twitter that Obama was to blame for the shutdown. Now it's not the President's fault. :lamo

You want to talk about morals? I see you aren't active in the Trump affair with his pornstar lover threads.

Asked and answered, both by me:

Red Herring. What Trump did as a common citizen back when he was still ostensibly a "democrat" and had no duty or responsibility as a member of Congress or our government is not equivalent to Senator Schumer then and now.

Nice try at deflection, although I will give you points for an example of Trump's own hypocrisy.

Hmm...I thought Democrats hated "what aboutisms"? :lamo

In any case, Trump did try to negotiate and the Dems responded in bad faith in order to justify not supporting the CR and to score points by blaming the President.

There is nothing in the CR itself that the Dems have any objection to. Nothing.

But instead of passing it and then continuing negotiations on DACA, the Wall, and other Immigration reform, they chose to "point a gun at the Reps head" which Schumer himself said was unacceptable "chaos."

All Congress had to do was pass the CR as written and then IF Trump refused to sign you would all have a leg to stand on.

As it is...you assign full blame to your number one target when you know the fault lies with Schumer and the other Democratic Senators for pulling the same crap Schumer argued against in 2013.

Nah....I don't know that at all. I think you do good spinning though...it's an art form. :sword:

Who cares if they are a member of Congress or not. They are still hypocrites, and Trump is a more glaring one at that. Since you said you had to hunt down this video like you were searching for it and it was hard to find. Literally everything Trump says he goes back on.

See look, I admitted that Schumer is a hypocrite. Can you do the same for Trump?

Apples and oranges. Why? Because he wasn't nearly so concerned about a government shutdown as he was about what we now refer to as the 2013 federal credit default crisis...which is precisely what he was talking about in the bolded parts.

SO the past does not count, when it is your guy. Your hypocrisy is noted!

How about people who only point to hypocrisy when it is the other guy, but has an excuse when it is their guy? When it comes to the shutdown, I blame every one without regard to party. I will also laugh at those who try and spin it into "the other guy's fault".

That's the problem with those we send to Washington. They are all hypocrites. the debt ceiling you mentioned. How about these senate votes. First under Bush.

Year..Democrats for..Democrats against..Republicans for..Republicans against
2002…….37………………….14………………31………………18
2003……..3…………………...45………………50………………..1
2004……..2……………………46……………....50………………..1
2006……..0……………………44………………52………………...3

Pay particularly attention to the years 2003, 2004 and 2006. In those three years only 5 Democrats voted to raise the debt ceiling, 135 senators voted against it.

Move on to the Obama presidency:

2009 ………59…………………0………………..1……………….40
2010…….....60…………………0………………..0……………….40
2012……….52…………………3………………..1………………..45
2013……….55………………….0……………….26……………….18

Again pay close attention to the years 2009, 2010 and 2012. During those three years on 2 Republican senators voted to raise the debt ceiling, 125 voted against. Strange how a party can either be for or against something depending on whether they hold the White House.

Government shutdowns, it the same thing. Adding Obamacare to the debt ceiling debate back in 2013 had them all in a tizzy. Every single Democrat thought raising the debt ceiling should be just that and nothing else. The republicans saw the debt ceiling as a tool for their political agenda which had nothing to do with the debt ceiling. Today, it is the republicans who think the budget process should be only about the budget and nothing else. Today it is the democrats who are using the budget process as a tool for their political agenda which like the debt ceiling crisis in 2013 has nothing to do with the budget.

Hypocrites one and all. both major political parties ought to be spanked and sent to their room without supper. Actually, since both parties love to play political games for very partisan reasons instead of taking care of the country, they need to be tossed out the window and put on the trash heap of history. They are a bunch of idiots and we all are idiots for sending them to Washington when all they care about is their political party, playing partisan games and not the country.

Excellent data. The years 2003-04-06 and 2010-12-13 show that neither side should be shaking a finger at the other. Mirror images of these BS artists.

Today I watched some CNN and then watched some FOX. What a pathetic dog and pony show.

Not really for several reasons, not the least of which is that (as his detractors often point out) Trump talks tough but often adjusts to reality.

He could sign the temporary CR (which is all this was) to gain time to negotiate a long term spending bill giving the Dems DACA in exchange for wall funding, elimination of chain migration and lottery exceptions, and other border security funding.

That would be part of either a final spending bill or a special bill just for immigration law purposes. That deadline would be the end of March, and even later since Trump does not seem wiling at this point to start the DACA expulsion process.

That's true, but not really quite what I was getting at though. All I'm saying is that a veto threat by Trump on a particular bill is equivalent to an actual veto. He may "adjust to reality," but there's no precedent for him saying he will veto a particular bill and then turn around and not doing so. And he knows, (or should know), that if he says he will veto a particular funding bill, McConnell and Ryan would never pass it and risk his veto because that would only hurt their own party in November.

So as far as things might be being held up by Trump signalling he won't support certain bills that could be passed in Congress, it is fair to blame him even though he hasn't actually vetoed anything. It's not clear to me if that's actually what's happening in this particular case, but I definitely believe we don't have to wait for Congress to actually pass a bill and have it be vetoed before any blame can rest with a President.

Nope that is not how it works. Republicans have the majority in the senate and House as well as the presidency so it is the failed leadership of the republicans that has caused the shut down.

I guess it is time for a civics lesson: to keep the doors open, a CR (continueing resolution) had to be passed. 60 votez are required to pass the CR . The Democrats didn't vote for the CR because they didn't get their way.

That's the reality of it. It's more understandable when you aren't totally ignorant of how the government works, eh?

The republicans could have put DACA in there and some money for the wall (remember Mexico was going to pay for it another lie from trump) and it would have passed. It’s a republican and trump failure to lead. Republicans are at fault.

Too bad your ignorance of reality gets in the way of your talking points from your false god trump.

They could have, but they didn't. They have the majority. Remember?

The Democrats have been rejected by the American people and they picked this hill to die on? Yeah, that might have been a bad decision.

Yeah. I realized a long time ago if one wants RNC propaganda, watch Fox. If one wants DNC propaganda watch CNN and MSNBC.The problem is quite a lot of folks thinks whatever news network they are watching they're getting the gospel. Fact is each has its own political agenda and slants their news in the direction of their biases towards whichever party they are for. There is no more straight news or just reporting the facts, the event. It's all about how they can influence people to view the political scene the way they want the people to view it.

do you often revert to yiddish? or just in select cases?

but schmuck schumer himself told the American public that it would be foolish for the democrats to shut down the government to advocate their preferred immigration plan

other than the span of a couple of years and a different person in the oval office, what has changed to now make shutting down government over the immigration laws a wise thing for the democrats to do
