Is there even a bar for Trump to lower?

There has been much discussion about Trump and how his personal behavior has lowered the bar regarding what we expect from our politicians and elected leaders. But now, with the revelation that his attorney paid a porn star $130,000 to buy her silence after a nearly year long affair at a time when he was newly married and a father again - it seems that the bar has been completely removed and no longer exists.

If this story had come to light about any other sitting president in the last hundred years - it would destroy them and totally consume the nation 24/7 and there would be little talk of anything else. Democrat or Republican, liberal, moderate or conservative, that person would be decimated by such a story.

But with Trump, its just item four on the top ten crawl and gets a few minutes of exposure.

You can talk about the economy and the stock market until the cows come home and we can debate what credit Trump and his policies should or should not get for that. But this story gives us ample evidence that Trump was 100% correct that he could shoot someone in New York in broad daylight and not suffer any adverse consequences.

This feeling of political and personal invulnerability is only made worse by the enablers who surround him and refuse to hold him accountable.

Will our politics ever recover from what Trump is doing to our ethics and public morality once the bar has been lowered to this base level or removed altogether?

I think this is what makes that faction of the left so crazy in their hatred for Trump, that there is so much legitimate dirt, so many weapons grade scandals, that any other human in that office would be resigning or pushed out.

But I've asked myself that question a few times. Is this a permanent lowering (burying?) of the bar? Or will republicans be paying for this over the next few elections? I can see "We don't want another Trump" being pretty effective against anyone who tries Trumps approach again.

I remember back in '08, the lawn signs they were putting out. Anyone running against a republican would make a similar sign as their opponents, with the same colors and background, that simply said "vote republican". They paired them with with almost every sign that republicans campaign planted. Anti-republican sentiment was so high that that was the most effective way to spend campaign funds (we're almost always blue for the presidency, but we're not too choosy with governors/congress critters). Personally, I think the '18 and '20 elections are going to be much worse than that for republicans. Most Americans, I feel, are embarrassed enough that this is our chosen leader to get up, get out, and vote for higher standards. I could see a savvy candidate copying their opponents color/design and just putting "More MAGA" on it, and planting them next to their opponents lawn signs lol.

Herein lies the problem, the left has set such low standards and cannot accept it when the Republicans adopt them. We have a President that isn't going to take their bull**** and be civil letting them have a free reign is posting lies, distortions, and personal destruction. They destroyed Bush, McCain, Romney and are now trying to destroy Trump but the actual economic results have the silent majority in his corner and not going to let that happen.

Lowering the bar to the left seems to mean record employment, historically(Pre recession level) unemployment/part time for economic reasons, GDP returning to above 3%, focus on economic growth and activity, America first foreign and economic policies, elimination of the PC mentality, and open honest discussion of what progressive/liberalism means to the average American(Dependence)

That's the problem with the haters. The things of substance are irrelevant to you. The things where Trump is knocking it out of the park are of no consequence. The recovering economy, the diplomatic success that the South Koreans credit to Trump, the exposure of Chinese spy infiltration finally coming to an end: you hate these things or they don't matter. It's all about "Trump said a mean thing in a tweet today". It's pathetic what the haters have to focus on, crying like like children who got a skinned knee.

Actually lowering or even destroying the bar for proper behavior is very much relevent - at least that is what I remember from the Monica scandal.
