Hatch not running -Romney east favorite

Orrin Hatch announced he will not run for re-election for his Senate seat in Utah where he is the longest serving GOP Senator and has served seven terms.

This clears the way for the very popular Mitt Romney to sweep in and take the seat and be a thorn in the side of Trump who he despises.

(CNN)Utah Sen. Orrin Hatch announced Tuesday that he won't seek re-election this year, clearing the way for Mitt Romney to return to the national stage by running for his seat.

He said in a social media message, "after much prayer and discussion with family and friends I've decided to retire at the end of this term."
Hatch, the Senate's longest serving Republican, has wrestled with the decision for months, emboldened by the entreaties of President Donald Trump, to seek an eighth term.
During an event last month at the Utah Capitol where Trump celebrated the administration's decision to shrink the Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante national monuments, Trump called Hatch "a true fighter" and said he hoped the Republican would continue to serve "in the Senate for a very long time to come."
The 83-year-old Hatch set off retirement rumors early last year when he said in an interview that he hoped to see Romney one day take his place. But he reversed course and repeatedly insisted to reporters that he "intended" to seek re-election. Last month, Hatch reveled in the spotlight as chairman of the Senate Finance Committee while shepherding a massive tax bill through the Senate -- attention, friends and colleagues said, that made him lean toward running again.

This could be fun to watch.

Mitt Romney is a fine man, very intelligent and a man who does a great deal to give back to society in the recognition of the blessings he has received in life.

America would be a very different, and I my view better, place had he won the Presidential election five years ago. Four additional years of President Obama's self important neglect of not only Congress, internally, but a general abandonment of international affairs, has led to the rise of the circumstances that brought us President Trump. Romney still has a lot to offer and I hope this is true - he will provide instant leadership in the Senate and the country.

It would be wise for Democrats to expect Romney, should he end up replacing Hatch, to be a shill for Trump. I'm not saying he will be a shill for Trump, but it would be wise to expect him to be.

Eating dinner with Trump isn't the same as kissing his ass. Although, it's close
There's no greater irony than a Trump supporter pointing out hypocrisy; Unless it's Trump himself.

yes - and I bet the taste and smell of Trump ass is not too pleasing for Mittens making him all the more angrier . Trump humiliated him in front of the political world and put it to him good. And Romney is probably counting the days to get his own revenge.

and thats a good thing as Martha says.

2017 is paved with the bodies of Republicans humiliated and insulted by Trump only to end up being shills for him anyway. If history is any teacher then it's not logical to expect different from Romney. Democrats should be focused like a laser beam on stopping trump's legislative agenda by electing Democrats to Congress.

I agree with your comments about Romney. Well said. This would have been a good post had to stuck the subject at hand and not compounded things with your baseless editorial silliness.

I don't like his politics, but he is a class guy that I believe will actually put America first. He would be a meaningful counterweight to Trump and most of the Republican Party that is only interested in putting Trump and Republicans first. We ain't getting a Dem in Utah. A Republican that isn't a wackadoo is an upgrade to the Senate.
