Statutory meaning (decided or controlled by laws) is the means by which people in the labor force in most other nations and perhaps all Industrialized nations, except the United States receive their annual vacation time. Why is statutory requirements an important fact when it comes to employee annual leave? Because the statutory requirement, requires all companies doing business in that country to comply with that basic law in order to continue to do business in that particular country. For instance even people who work at McDonald's in France are entitled to receive a minimum of five weeks of paid vacation time. (30 days with Saturdays but not Sundays counted as holidays) plus up to 22 days of RTT (Reduction of working time) for employees who choose to work more than the standard 35 hour work week with the limit being 39 hours. Further additional hours will be compensated monetarily.
In addition Bonus days are given to people who choose to take part of their annual time during the winter with one bonus day given for every three days taken during the winter time. The combination of all the rules could result in 9.5 weeks vacation time. To be fair I haven't as of this writing determined if these rules or any part of these rules apply to PART TIME EMPLOYEES. If any of you know for a fact one way or the other ,please enlighten me.

The point why I bring this subject up however, is for us to ponder how can (companies succeed) in a country and quite frankly 100s of countries who do the same, while claiming they will go bankrupt in America if America does anything like this. How can a country like France have a have an income tax rate bracket as of 2017 that looks like this,

1) to eu 9807 zero tax
2) eu 9807 to eu 27086 14 %
3) eu 27086 to eu72,617 30% Personal income tax is high but they get Universal healthcare. So they get something for their money. If there is no
healthcare and you
4) eu72617 to eu153783 41% you very ill, you loose your home and go bankrupt in America.
5) eu 153783 and over 45%

and a corporate tax rate of 33.33% .The corporate tax rate in the U.S with the G.O.P. Bill is close to France's so should we expect to see better social
reforms as a result? AT&T since the passage of the bill has announced some bonuses and firings.

While there a lot of factors to analyze when trying to compare the social apparatus of various countries I have only brought forth but a few. Others would be Median income and cost of living. The median income inf France as of 2016 was eu 42,992 while in the U.S it was $60,164
The cost of living excluding rent in France was 11.8% higher than the U.S. while rent was 28.23% lower in France as compared to the U.S. where one euro equals 1.19 U.S.dollars.

I only brought these later facts into focus was in the spirit of fairness to the two systems. These later facts really wasn't germane to my focus of this writing. My Focus is, Why are WE NOT GETTING WHAT WE ARE PAYING FOR? We are the RICHEST country in the world. WHY CAN"T WE AFFORD TO DO FOR OUR CITIZENS WHAT SO MANY OTHER COUNTRIES MANAGE TO DO WITH LESS? My God Afghanistan has STATUTORY ANNUAL LEAVE. The United Arab Emirates has STATUTORY ANNUAL LEAVE. Another question , why aren't more Americans angry. This is supposed to be a government of the people. But all we hear is let's give the poor Billionaires a well deserved break. Please let's talk fairly with one another on this one.

20% VAT on damned near every non-essential you buy and 5.5% on food and water. They also operate on the principle that if people work less hours you can employ more people.

A bit difficult to do when you already start off with attacking Trump's new tax plan.

The small government theory and an idolisation of corporations and the free market in America means that Americans will get 10 days if they are lucky (many get 0), while the rest of the world gets a guaranteed period of 14-30 days.

So, quit your job and start your own business instead of whining. That's what I did -- years ago. It was a lot of hard work at first, 60-80 hour weeks, but now, I take off for a month at a time if I like and I've traveled to all the places I wanted to travel. You can do that when you get off your butt and realize that your life is in your hands, not the hands of some employer.

It takes initiative but the rewards are great.

If you don't like this country.... MOVE!

Like it or not, there are different classes in this nation. Want better work benefits, better yourself and get a better job!

People who are whiners are often the ones who stay in the lower ranks, because employers don't like whiners!

Stand by for heavy rolls with that idea.

Blaming corporate America is far more easier than actually getting out of bed at 4:30 ya know.

Washington State just dictated 1 hour of full pay sick leave for every 40 worked,,,,which works out to more that a week of vacation per year, this on top of another 50 cents min wage to $11.50........that is a huge jump.

I'm not whining. I'm not American so I'm legally entitled to 20 days annual leave per year (I actually get more than 20). I'm just sympathising with the many millions of Americans who get screwed due to the lack of worker's rights. The 'free market' approach to annual leave has spectacularly failed workers compared to a governmental approach.

Meh. Corporate America has done worse than every government in the world when it comes to paid annual leave

Ah - I see - you're just judging a system you are not a part of. Got it.

However, what you're missing is that anyone, and I mean virtually anyone in the US with a little bit of gumption, can break free of the "worker" mold and strike out on his own. That's why the US is still the greatest nation in the world and why people will die trying to get here -- because we offer something many other nations do not -- greater freedom.

In my opinion, the world is populated with two types of people, the "makers" and the "takers." The US is a great place for the makers, who start businesses, create jobs, provide ever-increasing products and services. But, the takers, those who go complacently to their 9-to-5 office jobs (or burger-flipping jobs), those who watch the clock and try to do as little as they can to draw their paychecks, those who whine about not getting enough days off, are gaining a foothold. A smaller foothold here in the States than in other places, but, they're making inroads.

There's an undeniable problem with that -- when the takers grow stronger than the makers, the economy crashes, as it did in Italy. It can't be helped. When governments place the value of the takers over the value of the makers, they are already on a down slide. It's only a matter of time.

Ask Italy.

If you don't like your benefits from a certain employer then carry your happy self down the road.

Overall......many or most established employers offer pretty good leave/vacation benefits according the the labor statistics.

Government doesn't have to compete for the money they take in.

It's easy for governments to be generous with other peoples money, and this is historically true.

What is 20% vat?
I have already mentioned that the cost of living is 11.8% higher than in U.S. for merchandise etc. but I think I said 28.33% less than U.S. on rent.
The conversation that I was hoping to have isn't about whether one would prefer to live in France over America or vise a versa. The conversation I would like to generate is why can Companies survive economically in France while France and other countries offer so much to the people in terms of social benefits. Yet companies in the U.S say they can't do business in America if we get benefits anywhere close to this? Seems not to ring very truthful to me. Yet American's pay high taxes, so then why can't we get a better deal for our money?

A bit difficult to do when you already start off with attacking Trump's new tax plan.

I don't recall attacking anything. I presented the same scenario that another forum user put forth to prove how great the plan was. The only difference was that person said that the two children were under 17. It's entirely fair to put forth both scenarios.
But since your so worried about the GOP tax bill let me ask you a valid question, DO YOU KNOW WHAT A PASS THROUGH COMPANY IS AND WHO THAT BENEFITS? I'll give you a hint (BELIEVE ME BELIEVE ME)

Attacking Trump's tax plan means you can't talk fairly?

Well ,I didn't attack the GOP TAX plan. I used a scenario that another forum user put forth but instead of having two children under 17 as that person did, I had two children over 17. That person also compared the GOP plan to 2016. That would only be fair if we are currently living in 2016. I more fairly compared the GOP tax plan to 2018.

The small government theory and an idolisation of corporations and the free market in America means that Americans will get 10 days if they are lucky (many get 0), while the rest of the world gets a guaranteed period of 14-30 days.

That is true. So two questions come to mind.

1) If corporations in those countries can succeed, why are we told they can't succeed in America if we get benefits like that?
2) Why can't American's get a better deal for their money? Why wouldn't we demand it?

France has 6 guys with rifles as their army (not quite but close)

Who the hell do you think protects their ass? And Italy, Sweden, Denmark, England, and so on, and so on.....

We are the worlds police force....there can be NO comparison as long as that is the case

We can stop tomorrow....i would have zero issue bringing our troops back, and dismantling the bases we have built

But when a hot spot comes into play....our boys wont be going....we can send the Italians, the French, and the Swedes to play with the NK or the Chinese, or the Russians

We as a country have to make this decision....because so many other decisions flow from this one....will we be the big dog with the big stick, or will we cut defense and go back to more of an isolationist country and to hell with the rest of the world

You cant have it both ways....

Well ,I've worked hard all my life. So for you to pretend to know otherwise is unkind and unfair. Secondly, If all American's were owners of businesses then the potential for consumers would surely suffer. Thirdly not all people are endowed with the same abilities. While we are not all capable of doing the same things, we all have the same needs. The "Kinder and Gentler country" That was so affectionately referred by George H.W. Bush seems to fit the notion that we care for ( the least of thee.)
Finally, I'm 67 years old. I'm not in any way able to benefit from any such policies even if they were enacted today.

Well again I'll tell you that due to my age, any such reversal of public policy couldn't possibly benefit me.
Secondly I have worked hard all my life. So please don't judge when you know nothing of which you speak.
Thirdly; I think,You and Mr. Scrooge would make ideal friends

Stand by for heavy rolls with that idea.

Blaming corporate America is far more easier than actually getting out of bed at 4:30 ya know.

I have all my life worked hard and have gotten out of bed a lot earlier than that.

Can we now that you all have had your fun attacking me, actually have an intelligent conversation about this?

Well I have counted way over 150 other countries before I stopped counting that have made this transition to legally mandate certain benefits for their work force.
When you think about it, a work force is part of the Commons. Just like a natural resource is part of the commons. A government that is (of the people and for the people) should certainly have some input as to how that (HUMAN RESOURCE) is utilized. Don't you all agree with that premise?
