Republicans warn Trump of 2018 bloodbath

By Alex Isenstadt 12/21/2017

A few weeks before Alabama's special Senate election, President Donald Trump’s handpicked Republican National Committee leader, Ronna Romney McDaniel, delivered a two-page memo to White House chief of staff John Kelly outlining the party’s collapse with female voters. McDaniel’s memo, which detailed the president's poor approval numbers among women nationally and in several states, would go unheeded, as Trump eventually went all-in for the ultimately unsuccessful Republican candidate. The backstage talks provide a window into how those closest to Trump are bracing for a possible bloodbath in the 2018 midterms, which could obliterate the Republican congressional majorities and paralyze the president’s legislative agenda. In recent weeks, some of the president’s advisers have taken it upon themselves to warn him directly about the fast-deteriorating political environment. White House officials have convened to discuss ways to improve his standing with suburban voters. And on Wednesday, the president met with Kelly, political director Bill Stepien, communications director Hope Hicks, former Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski and Brad Parscale, Trump’s digital director in the 2016 campaign, to discuss the political landscape. In an interview this week, Stepien acknowledged the pattern of presidents losing seats in Congress in their first midterm election. But he argued that it's far too early to write off the GOP in 2018.

Among GOP leaders, however, there is widespread concern heading into 2018. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) has said privately that both chambers could be lost in November. House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) has told donors that he fears a wave of swing district Republican lawmakers could retire rather than seek reelection. Trump is well aware of the dangers his party faces in 2018, those who’ve discussed it with him say. The president, however, has shrugged off some early setbacks. After the Alabama loss, he gathered with Vice President Mike Pence, Kelly, Stepien and deputy chief of staff Rick Dearborn. The group dived into the results, talking through why the race played out as it did. But some Republicans are still sounding the alarm. Scott Jennings, a former top political adviser in the George W. Bush White House who is close to McConnell, said the president has major political challenges in the coming year: improving his approval numbers, ensuring the party nominates strong general election candidates, and selling his economic accomplishments. “There are 10 months to improve the fundamentals here, and the Senate map is, on paper, good. But maps don’t make majorities and I think there’s a realization that there’s at least a 50 percent chance one or both chambers could fall,” Jennings said. “In less than one year, this first term could be, for all intents and purposes, over if the Democrats take control of either chamber.”

Republicans can [rightfully] sense a political tsunami on the near horizon.

The useful idiots will always be influenced by the Mainstream Media Heck, here's an example:

So, as long as these kinds of people are out there, the Republicans will ALWAYS have problems getting their people elected.

the left has no message or leadership, or money, besides being racist against whites...

Keep bashing liberals, and ignore Nov 2010. It dont look good for the GOP, and no amount of GOP crocodile tears will change that, hope the tax bill was worth loosing the House next year, can you say Speaker Pelosi without your head spinning? You reap what you sow.

Oh, God!!!

We are about to see ANOTHER WAVE ELECTION for the Democrats.

What does this make the total number of predicted wave elections sweeping the Democrats back into power since 2008? Are we up to 5 now including 2018?

EVERY Election seems to be predicted to be another WAVE ELECTION for the DEMS.

Then people vote.

Well, I guess listening to yet another WAVE of predictions of yet another BLUE WAVE is expected.

I grew up in Minnesota and have been hearing that the Vikings will win the Super Bowl this year every year since I was about 17. I'll be retiring next year.

But you know what? WE might do it this year! Hope springs eternal.

Well, if I may take us back a year or so ---- people were predicting a bloodbath for Republicans in November of 2016 too. Predictions mean nothing other than voicing someone's wishful thinking.

Talk about 2010 repeating its self, the GOP will lucky to hang on to the Senate.

I agree. People are going to be really pissed about lower taxes and more take home pay. They are going to be especially angry when they get raises and promotions and get to buy tires on that old car before Obama dug is teeth into the economy. And many of their kids will be missing paying the "individual mandate" and won't know what to do with that money. They should continue to voluntarily pay it!
Yup. Most people will voluntarily throw it all away to teach the Bad Trump a lesson!

1. Stock Market in record territory
2. people seeing thousands of dollars in tax cuts
3. illegal immigration down
4. 1.7 million jobs created
5. GDP over 3%
6. unemployment at 4%

The media is working overtime on it's propaganda against trump. but the numbers don't lie, and historically, when numbers are good. the incumbents of the party in power do well.

SO the Tax bill will cost Republicans the House?

What planet are you from anyway? The house is a lock up for Republicans. So are most State capitols.

We are reaping what the left has sown. :lamo

Ignore the polls, and more importantly history at your own peril. We have not even begun to discuss Trumps obstruction of justice charge dragging the GOP down even further, oh this going to get real good lol. Mueller should drag this out at least until Nov 2018 lol. Seen the polls on the tax plan ? Bwahaha

except he hasn't been charged, so you might want to re-write your analysis to reflect on the ground reality.

I see the Trumpers don't like the OP message with quotes by GOP leadership.

Good. It won't be pretty.

That is exactly what the trends are showing. A year long trend, not a short term trend caused by a single event that can jump one way and then settle down to where it was prior to the event in a week or two. I wouldn't be surprised at all if the Democrats take back both chambers. Unless something drastically changes to change the direction of the year long trend, tsunami isn't a bad word.

I tend to call these elections, sea change elections. The first midterm is usually a referendum on the president. So far Trump has turned off all Democrats, most independents and some Republicans by his persona alone. Not so much by what he has did or didn't do policy wise, but his persona grates and grates on folks. Keep in mind the history of the first midterm. The party since FDR what holds the white house has lost seats in congress with one lone exception. That was G.W. Bush in 2002, but he had 9-11 happen which united the country behind him and his party. Here is the history of the first midterms. It doesn't bode well for republicans unless they are living in a fantasy land.

Obama lost 63 seats in 2010
Bush gained 8 seats in 2002 But lost 33 seats in 2006
Clinton lost 54 seats in 1994
Bush lost 8 seats in 1990
Reagan lost 26 seats in 1982
Carter lost 15 seats in 1978
Nixon lost 12 seats in 1970
LBJ lost 47 seats in 1966
JFK lost 22 seats in 1962
Eisenhower lost 18 seats in 1954
Truman lost 28 seats in 1950
FDR gained 11 seats in 1934.

Not true sir. The LW also has Trump bad.

Surprisingly, 18 months ago you could get 500-1 odds of a Trump loss. A Year ago those odds had diminished slightly.

Yes. The Republicans should find a way to win the female vote. Pity they can’t ask the Kennedy brothers how to wheedle one’s way into female voters’ hearts without bowing to even the slightest decency beyond hot air lip service.

Oh I dont think a rewrite will be necassary, thank you Mr Mueller:lamo

i'm definitely motivated to vote against Republicans.

I like Preotista's predictions, unless you draw a distinction between prediction and analysis. In that a prediction is an illumination of the crystal ball gazer's whims and an analysis is the process of examining evidence, from which one can draw a conclusion.

Yes, I want to crush them.

Whatever Hater-aide they've been drinking the past 8 years, some spilled over into my cup.

i feel the same. i find it unfortunate that voting for Democrats is my only viable way to punish them, because the Democratic party is inept and has no message. i'd probably help them with that if they asked me. however, when i have to seriously check Google News every morning to make sure that this dip**** hasn't started a nuclear war yet and then i'm relieved that he hasn't, someone needs to pay for that.

PREDICTION: If the GOP loses the House next November in a big blue wave election - Trump will tell us he was NOT on the ballot and it is not his fault.

PREDICTION: If the GOP loses the Senate next November in a big blue wave election - Trump will tell us he was NOT on the ballot and it is not his fault.

PREDICTION: If the GOP loses both the House and the Senate next November - Trump will tell us he was NOT on the ballot and it is not his fault.

I agree that Trump is an existential threat to the world. I also think Trump is likely very guilty of a host of crimes. He is the crowned prince of Doofusdom, and may be directly to blame for sweeping Republican losses, if they come to fruition.

There is Trump but, I just want to get rid of like the.. Steve King's in congress.

Or this dbag:

ClayHiggins1.png

That is distinguished representative Clay Higgins. (Anyone who mentions 'Christendom' is disqualified IMO.) But anyone who, then takes religious fanaticism to a new level, by essentially declaring a war on Muslims, needs to go.

And if I was Democrats I would take that statement, enlarge it and smear all Republicans with it. Why? (One example) During the Governor race in VA, which Republicans lost btw. The GOP candidate smeared the Democratic candidate as a MS-13 sympathizer. So, no one can say Republicans are above playing dirty political tricks. And then there's Trump who literally called for Russia to hack a political opponents emails from the podium. He said that.

.

So is he a doofus or a master international criminal?

You don't get NY Sarcasm, but lets pretend he did, he challenged Russia to find the 30,000 missing emails, your criminal candidate hid from authorities which were under subpeona. If you think about it, what was bad here, that the subpeonad emails showing crimes would be bad because trump sarcastically stated Russia should find them?

You guys and your priorities, so off.
