Poll: Percentage of Americans Identifying As Republican Has Dropped Since Trump Won

The percentage of Americans who consider themselves Republican or lean that way has dropped since Donald Trump was elected president, a Gallup poll found. Those identifying with the Democratic Party have held steady.

The percentage of people who identify as or lean Republican has fallen 5 points from 42 percent of the population to 37 percent, according to the poll comparing November 2016 with November 2017, which was released last week. The percentage of voters identifying as Democratic has remained at 44 percent.

Surprised?

Me neither.

No, I'm not surprised. I keep saying that it's embarrassing as Hell to tell people I'm a Republican now. They think I'm one of those Trumpbots, one of the simpletons who supports Roy Moore, or an alt-right Bannonite.

This is the new Republican Party, led by Trump and Miller and the other lunatics. If they are "Republicans", I'm going to say that I'm not. I am nothing like those people and don't want to be anything like them.

It’s tragic that a-it took so long and b-the other side hasn’t caught on. Both parties are populated by muppets. They are everything that is wrong with the state of politics. You don’t get the politicians we have without the voters we have.

Bingo.

If you asked someone on the left to make a caricature of the Republican party it would be Trump. I'm not surprised people are leaving.

Trump is a caricature of crooked politicians.
Over the top promises, sending govt business to his companies, flip-flopping, lies, etc.

History won't be kind to Trumpco customers.

If you told a republican that, they would most likely say something like "I don't believe in polls" or "the polls are all done by democrats" or some version of that. They totally dismiss any reality that doesn't fit the republican narrative.

That would be a good thing for democrat candidates, except that the republican candidates are smarter than their followers, and they will attempt to use that type of information to rally their troops (donations).

Personally, I think the more moderate/sane Republican voters should abandon the GOP and try and form their own political party. Just let Trump and his goons have the GOP, and watch them self destruct. Start from scratch, and don't let a Trump type situation EVER happen again.

The rise of Trump could have been stopped years ago, but the GOP chose to ignore the problem (and actually created the environment that made Trump's rise possible) and now Trump and the far right have taken over. Ironic, isn't it? A life long NYC Democrat like Trump hi-jacks the Republican Party, and becomes a heroic figure to the far right. We live in some strange times indeed.

While, yes, there are some that are as you describe, but I'm hard pressed to believe that it's the majority.

I also think they've been driven underground by the vitriol from the other side, much as it was during the campaign, which turned out to be a surprise to all those hurtling the insults at them. Might very well be more surprises in store for them.

I don't know. I'm starting to think they are a majority. But it's possible many have been driven underground. I wish all the Bannonites would go underground for good, and start their own party,

I think they are the majority as well. The problem is.. who the democrats put up for the next election.

It is a bit about race, and discrimination etc. At the end of the day.. a lot of white, older folks.. still identify more with Trump.. than they do with some democrat ultra left wing liberals. So while they hold their noses when voting for trump.. they still vote for him.

the democrats have to figure out why they lost.. and that's because they picked Hillary.. and because they have been pushed themselves more left/liberal. If they run a strong NRA supporting, moderate democrat.. they win.

Agree with that last line particularly. I could see a Joe Manchin, for instance, transcending party lines.

Better than Hillary.. but he has to move more pro gun.

on the other hand, if the democrats run a candidate is liberal, passionately champions the values of the liberal and progressive base, and runs a campagin that focuses on the economic inequality plauging this country, the democrats may win anyway

Nope. Tried it.. lost to TRUMP!.. (like holy crap.. you lost to TRUMP.. that should make you step back and ask what is wrong with the democrat party if Trump can beat us)

That's the problem. You liberals don't get it. That's why you continue to wander around trying to figure out why Hillary.. the champion of liberal values and progressive base.. lost. If you try to go more left.. with like a Bernie? You lose easier.

and how much more can the public stand of conservative economic dogma, which has been tried, starting from the reagan administration.... no wait, starting from the warren g harding administration.

Well.. Reagan was elected twice, bush senior elected.. then bush junior to two terms.. and now trump. it seems that the public can stand quite a bit. In that time.. Clinton and Obama.

think about it..

Trump supporters were driven underground during the campaign. Its the only possible reason that the polls were so far off from the actual results.

It seems reasonable that as yet more vitriol against Trump and Trump supporters was spewed, it only kept them there, underground.
