CNN)President Donald Trump on Sunday shot back at Lavar Ball, the father of one of the UCLA basketball players arrested in China, for belittling the President's role in the students' release.

"Now that the three basketball players are out of China and saved from years in jail, LaVar Ball, the father of LiAngelo, is unaccepting of what I did for his son and that shoplifting is no big deal," Trump tweeted. "I should have left them in jail!"

I wish this was surprising. I wish we were at a time in US Politics where if a sitting US President tweeted anything remotely like this his sanity would be called into question. If UCLA's coach, Steve Alford tweeted this he would have been fired. We hold college coaches to a higher standard than someone sitting in the highest office in the land. Politics aside, the GOP has to know the President is a blubbering man-child, right? Like, there's no way they can look at him, his actions, behavior, and twitter account and believe that the guy they voted for is all there mentally.

The very day they were released, Trump was already tweeting that they're not going to thank him. Demanding thanks from someone before they even have a real opportunity to do so is incredibly petty...and it prevents any possibility of the thanks being sincere. ANY other president would have made the effort to get them freed, but I can't think of another president of either party who would have been so petty, so small, so puerile as to complain about not being thanked even before they had the chance to do so!

Nobody's saying Lavat Ball is great. The issue is Trump saying he should have let Americans rot in a Chinese prison because some guy wasn't falling at his feet prostrate.

Trump is an idiot. Trash talk like this probably plays well with his base, some 30-35% of America. But this type of trash talk has no business coming from a president. Part of being a successful president is knowing when to keep quiet and let things roll off one's back. Reagan was great at this. He knew when to respond and when not to. People can play Trump like a violin. Set a trap for his foot in mouth disease and watch Trump walk right into it. Trump's mouth is his own worst enemy or should I say twitter.

Trump's problem is that he is playing to his base, he hasn't tried to expand that base one iota. Not only are Democrats trying to destroy, independents don't much like him either. Only 32% approve vs. 50% disapprove of Trump. He has his core within the GOP, but he didn't even try to unify the Republican Party behind him. That leaves him with 77% approval within the republican party, but only 46% strongly approve of Trump. That's not good.

Trump had some good ideas, populism isn't a bad brand of politics to play. It may be even in vogue today. But because of his persona, Trump constant need to create needless feuds and to attack one and all who may say something bad about him, instead of treating nonsense and letting nonsense stuff roll off his back. He has to create controversy. The guy doesn't know politics or how to get support beyond his base.

What kind of an idiot steals while in another country, gets caught and then the president has to intercede and the kids Dad acts like a ...............................
instead of saying Thanks Mr. president for getting my shopping lifting kid out of a a Chinese jail.

So his dad's a dick? I won't disagree with that, but you are basically saying what I said. Trump wanted to let Americans rot in a Chinese prison because some guy (who is a major dick) won't worship.at his feet.

Imagine what your response would be if Obama got prisoners freed, then said "no, you know what give them the death penalty" because he found out they were related to conservatives.

The kid's behavior was inexcusable. But this is about the President's behavior.

Trump chose to become a public servant. And when you are a public servant your job is to serve the public regardless of whether or not they appreciate it or not.

What kind of president stoops to his level? Why? He could have let Ball look the fool. Instead his ego just won't allow for that. And for what? So he can be a proud king.

Actually a year ago, most conservatives were cheering his tweets. It just took that long for them to realize that they don't work and makes things much much worse. Although one care argue Trump Jr.'s tweets are even stupider.

Three kids who are minorities able to attended UCLA, travel to China to play basketball with their team and turn around and shoplift.

Hardly the ambassadors one would want to represent your country.

They were facing 10 year sentences in prison.

Trump talks to Xi about their release and in 24 hours they were put on a plane back home.

All the students thanked Trump. But the one father had to be a yahoo. Most normal parents would be so grateful to have their kid back home they would not even think of responding in such a way even if they vehemently disliked Trump. But not this yahoo.

For Trump to respond to this father in such a manor to me makes the father look all that more small and puts things into perspective.

Your upset should be directed at the kid that broke the law and his goofy Dad but your hatred for Trump stops you from seeing that.

No it's not about the president's behavior.... A common courtesy is to say Thank you Mr. President! He got the kid released in 24 hours.
Where is the upset with the thieving college kid. Steals stuff from multiple stores?
