President Trump campaigned as one of the world’s greatest dealmakers, but after nine months of struggling to broker agreements, lawmakers in both parties increasingly consider him an untrustworthy, chronically inconsistent and easily distracted negotiator .

As Trump prepares to visit Capitol Hill on Tuesday to unify his party ahead of a high-stakes season of votes on tax cuts and budget measures, some Republicans are openly questioning his negotiating abilities and devising strategies to keep him from changing his mind.

The president’s propensity to create diversions and follow tangents has kept him from focusing on his legislative agenda and forced lawmakers who might be natural allies on key policies into the uncomfortable position of having to answer for his behavior and outbursts.

Congress blaming Trump for why they cant get anything done, why this is the worse Congress in living memory, has become a popular sport.

Most likely impeachment related.

The article speaks of Trump as a negotiator, his ability to get things done. He couldn't even negotiate a health care plan, because he knew nothing about it, and didn't want to learn. All he wants is his name on something. Tell us just what he has been able to negotiate through Congress.

The really sad note here is that the Republican lawmakers are somehow surprised that Trump is an untrustworthy man. I mean, golly-gee-whiz, people, what the heck was your first clue?

Wasn't Trump supposed to fix it?

Seriously? The republican congress's fault? He has a republican congress and senate for God's sake! Other president's could only dream of that!

That was the plan before the plan was to offload Trump ASAP, before Trump did not have enough power of the people to take over the R party.

He's had plenty of chances and for a while the republican congress gave him lots of leeway. There comes a time when your own party realizes you're an idiot and you aren't much of a leader.

Trump tried and failed to take over the R party, this is not a normal situation, as you should know, certainly so after all the news headlines about how the party is in civil war. And once the Elite Class went on strike against the People's Choice even before he sat Trump was relieved of all expectation from reasonable people that he is to blame for the lack of function in Washington as leaders can not lead without followers and without hands to get the work done.

Instead of making excuses, how about these lawmakers just write and pass a bill. Trump has already...more than once...told them what he wants. If the President likes it, he'll sign it. If he doesn't, he won't.

Sounds to me like they are setting up excuses...with the help of the Mainstream Media...for them to NOT pass a bill. Which is what they want in the end.

The Congressional Elite con job continues...

This president has zero idea of what he wants. Just yesterday congress asked him specifically to tell them what he wanted in a health care bill, still no answer.

Since Trump will sign anything they send to his desk, the failure to get anything done lies 100% with the republican congress.

So just give up nine months in? I thought we were supposed to give him time. I guess there's no stopping the establishment then huh?

When they actually had something concrete Trump said it was too mean because Schumer told him it was. Trump is a backstabbing hypocrite.

Exactly.

Those of us who voted for Trump (well those people I know including myself anyway) knew he was not a politician, but rather a salesman with knowledge of business dealings. Despite all his superlatives during the campaign, we knew he had no "big plans" ready for when he got into office.

We expected, as did he, that the Republicans in Congress had a whole list of ready-for-action legislation regarding everything they've been complaining about for 8 years. That they were locked and loaded, only needing a Republican President to pull the trigger.

Well they got one, and he made his promises of success based on their promises of such legislation. Now they want to blame HIM for poor negotiation skills?

What's to negotiate!? They control both damn Houses of Congress, and a willing President.

So where are all those promised bills where all he had to do was sign? He'd look good and they would look good, and stuff would get done.

Instead, nothing.

The Mainstream Media is helping the Republican congress to do nothing?
Bit of a stretch, innit?

Politicians deal in graft and favors. The Republican Party got so locked in to obstruction mode that they're incapable of governing. The party of "No!" has become the party of "Can't!"

I agree most of it has to do with the whining and complaining from the Conservatives in the Republican Party. It was clear they were just the party of no but Trump is not helping when he aligns with Democrats more than Republicans.

Trump has promised a whole lot, and failed a whole lot.

Yep he has always been a con artist, he promises anything and everything and never delivers. That's why he went bankrupt seven times. Four of those were casinos. How big of an idiot do you have to be to bankrupt not one but four casinos????

It appears you guys aren't hearing much about the NAFTA talks either.

Prepare yourselves because it looks like Trump is going to rip up NAFTA regardless of the talks. Sources from Canada and Mexico say the US is bargaining in bad faith, will appear to agree to something one day and publicly reject it the next. Word is that Trump is pursuing a 'zero sum" strategy which means they want a win for their side on every file, all take no give.

We are heading into a trade war that will cost thousands of jobs on both ides of the border, more in the US than Canada. We are after all, your largest supply of goods, more than China and the EU together....and I can't wait to hear the hateful anti-Canadian rhetoric when those prices go ballistic.

It's classic American politics though. There isn't ONE economist who agree with the Trump crowd, all say a trade war with Mexico and the Canada will hurt the US more than Canada or Mexico.

So this bit of news has no surprise at all for any Canadian whose been following the talks. It should be plain as day, Trump's ego is bigger than Uranus and he HAS TO WIN...a win maybe for him with his nut bar supporters, but devastation to the North American economy.

I knew that the Rebellion was in deep trouble DEC and proclaimed it a failed attempt in first week of FEB, then in AUG I think it was I decided that America almost certainly does not start to get our **** together till BIG PAIN hits, because we are too ignorant right now to get there.

Wow so you give up after nine months after spending eight of those months telling us to give him time.... :hitsfan:

Negotiations can be drawn out, you know. And they can require behavior that appears quite inconsistent with the goals. I am not saying that this is necessarily, what is going on right now. But I also don't see much that speaks against it.

To know, we'll have to sit and wait.
