From the Jackson (Miss.) Clarion-Ledger:

A predominately black public school in Mississippi named after Jefferson Davis will have its Confederate tied namesake stripped next year and replaced with the title of another president whose character students, parents and teachers have said is more fitting— Barack Obama. Davis Magnet IB PTA President Janelle Jefferson announced at the Jackson Public Schools Board of Trustees meeting Tuesday evening that school stakeholders voted on Oct. 5 to rename the school Barack Obama Magnet IB.

“Jefferson Davis, although infamous in his own right, would probably not be too happy about a diverse school promoting the education of the very individuals he fought to keep enslaved being named after him,” she told the board.

A demographic breakdown of Davis Magnet’s enrollment for the 2017 school lists 98 percent of the school’s students as black.

Overall, JPS’ enrollment is 97 percent black.

Jefferson said the school community wanted to rename the campus “to reflect a person who fully represents ideals and public stances consistent with what we want our children to believe about themselves.”
“I wholeheartedly agree with the name,” said Board President Camille Simms.

The announcement brought a jovial mood to the room.

But pay attention to what follows in the article:

Attendees were aware of the possibility that Tuesday’s board meeting could be the last for the district in the long time. The state Board of Education requested in September for Gov. Phil Bryant to declare JPS in a state of emergency. That move would trigger a state takeover.

Bryant is expected to make a decision this week on whether to approve the board’s resolution.

His signature would result in the disbandment of the school board.

It was actually the possibility of being unable to meet again that spurred the board members at their Sept. 19 meeting to delegate their naming authority to PTA groups at three schools —Davis Magnet, George Elementary and Lee Elementary, named after Confederate leaders.

At the time, the board’s attorney Dorian Turner advised that it was unclear whether the board had the authority to abdicate its responsibility.

On Tuesday, she confirmed, however, that the name change would be able to take place for the 2018-19 school year.

There are still logistics to work out, and Jefferson said the school and other partners, such as corporate sponsors, are expected to raise costs for the actual name change.

Updates on renaming efforts for George Elementary and Lee Elementary were not immediately available.

A "state of emergency" requested by the state over changing the names of schools?

So why didn't queen wannabe Hillary become president ?
Because she would of continued where this dude has left off.
...irrational,nonsensical and illogical.
Think you know millions would agree with me. All the more reason why Donald Trump is president.

Yeah, why the heck would any 97%-black school want to change their name from the name of the guy who led the war to preserve slavery to the name of the first black president? Gee, the mind boggles!

I think they should have renamed the school after Harriet Tubman, Fredrick Douglas, Nat Turner or some other black historical figure who fought against slavery.

Lol what? Don't do drugs kids.

Seriously how could you possibly try to make a claim like that?

Wait a minute. Obama defeated Clinton, right? You think the Democrats would have been better off with Hillary in '08?
What did your millions say on '08 and '12?

Gee, I thought he meant don't do drugs because you'll fry your brain and spout nonsense.

You don't care about the killing. You care about your fantasy that Obama is a "dictator".

I know what he meant.
Matter of fact I wonder how many folks voted for Trump and now regret doing so. I wonder if they preferred Hillary instead ?

I think the light will dawn on some of them. Not you of course.

Stop the killing.

Wanna stop the killing? Then stop making it so easy for poor (and pissed-off) people to easily get firearms. And no, don't blame the violence on restrictive gun laws, because gun-shop bans are useless when there's nothing stopping the guns from being bought elsewhere and brought there.

Chicago is seen as having some of the most restrictive gun ordinances in the country. Gun shops are banned, and no civilian gun ranges exist. There is a ban on both assault weapons and high-capacity magazines. But more than 15,000 of the guns traced by the police came from just outside the city limits in Cook County and in neighboring towns that permit gun stores.

When it's very difficult for the poor to acquire firearms, then one winds up with homicide rates that are closer to those like Australia or Japan or all of Western Europe...

...or Indonesia, that third-world 85% Muslim nation that has a lower homicide rate than even our safest state (references on Indonesia available on demand).

But, of course, if you still just gotta make firearms so relatively cheap and easy for the poor to get hold of, then yes, you will - WILL - have high homicide rates. Just ask the state with the highest homicide rate in the nation: Louisiana.
