Did Trump do the right thing by cutting a deal with Dems?

I think he did the right thing. The important thing was to get aid to Texas. That's all that mattered. Senate Republicans would have looked pretty damned stupid holding out for an 18-month extension n the debt ceiling.

For all we know, this was a backdoor deal the Reps agreed to willing to let Trump take the fall...

Actually, 3 House Republicans right here in Texas voted against any kind of relief for Houston and surrounding areas.

I wonder if they were interviewed to express their reasons. Unbelievable. Texas!

Such an ambitious goal could only work IF the Dems could pull some RINO's along with them. Otherwise, Republicans would simply band together (some would certainly be pressured to do so) to block their efforts. Why? Two obvious reasons:

1) Why give the opposition party a victory if you can avoid it; and,
2) ObamaCare is still a hot-button issue the GOP can run on because Obama is still very much disliked among Republican voters.

Although ObamaCare has gain some popularity with voters, no changes will be acceptable by Republicans unless the argument against GOP opposition can be framed as "they're taking your health care away / leaving you out to die / costing your money".

Pull some RINO's with you and the Dems could make a difference in healthcare reform.

The republicans are in the majority but are in a tough spot. Obamacare needs fixing to one degree or another. I think everyone agrees with that. Republicans have just shown that they cant pass anything to address the problem. If the democrats put together a plan (no matter how good or bad it is) that the president gets behind, the media will get behind it as well. Virtually everyone agrees that changes to Obamacare need to happen. The republicans have just demonstrated that after 7 years of bitching, they don't have a plan. If dems put together something reasonable, that Trump gets behind and the media gets behind, the public will get behind it as well. Without an alternative, the republicans will cave in. They'll have to. Its really the only way anything will get done on health care.

I knew that things were rocky between Trump and the GOP leadership in Congress, but this move was straight up spitting in their face. I refuse to believe that Trump will magically usher in a new era of bipartisanship, but it is strange as hell to see the same conservatives who have blasted the "left" and "liberals" for years boasting about this decision. Trump built a reputation as being divisive on everything, a hurricane smacks Texas, and now he is willing to make nice with the same people he has blamed every chance he has had?

I am not a supporter of the amoral Donald J Trump. But I will say that leadership requires being the president of all Americans. That sometimes necessitates reaching across the aisles and making the best deal possible. I can not speak about what his motives may be, only he knows that. But from my point of view, if he is going to be a president of All the people, instead of his narrow base going forward, then good. Let's see what tomorrow brings.;)

That's essentially why he snuggled up to the Democrat leadership: He got tired of losing with Republicans and figured why not give the Democrats a try. Still, it's as you say: Pres. Trump needs a win! So, if working with the Democrats pushes Republicans to "step-up" in order to get BIG legislative things done, then it's a win for all sides but especially for Trump.

* Dems stop mirroring the GOP obstructionist of the last 8 years and show they can stand for something meaningful.
* Republicans show they can govern for a change and not block damned near everything that comes there way if it's not their idea or something they fully support.
* Trump gets to look presidential, in command and in control of the process of governance.
* The people most impacted by partisan brinksmanship finally get the relief they need.

It's a win-win-win-win all the way around...if it works.

If you never had health insurance and now you do and especially if you or some one you love had a serious health condition, you just might consider that meaningful.

I think all of that is true. Oddly enough, democrats are in a very strong position with Trump in office. If they were smart and could get past their hate for the guy, they could get a lot accomplished. Pelosi and Schumer should present Trump with a plan that would gain unanimous democratic support to fix the problems with Obamacare. Trump would hop right on that plan if he thought he could get it passed.

I think that's exactly what Pelosi and Schumer are trying to do. It is about governing after all. I'm spite of eight years of obstructionism, with Mc Connell saying "my primary objective is to make Obama a one term president" things did get done. For all it's ills, the AHCA did save lives, made people healthier and save money via emergency room visit not needed. Given the opposition, that was no small task. Isn't ironic though that the legislation that the republicans and their pundits like to call Obama care, came right out of the Heritage foundation. That's irony! Republicans give Obama credit for their idea.
