AARP to Alert 38 Million Members How Their Members of Congress Vote on Health Bill

WASHINGTON, March 17, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- AARP Executive Vice President Nancy LeaMond released the following statement today in response to the pending vote on the House bill that would create an "Age Tax," weaken Medicare's solvency, put at risk seniors' ability to live independently as they age, and give sweetheart deals to big drug and insurance companies. In a letter sent to all 435 members of the House of Representatives, AARP maintained its strong opposition to this harmful bill and urged each Representative to vote 'No' on the proposed legislation. AARP believes this legislation will have a significant negative impact on the health of millions of older Americans ages 50 to 64, as well as other vulnerable groups, including poor seniors and disabled children and adults.

"AARP recognizes the magnitude of the upcoming vote on this harmful legislation that creates an Age Tax, cuts the life of Medicare, and gives sweetheart deals to big drug and insurance companies while doing nothing to lower the cost of health care or prescriptions. We intend on letting all 38 million of our members know exactly how their Representative voted. Our members care deeply about their health care and have told us repeatedly that they want to know where their elected officials stand. We will communicate the results of the House vote to our members and the public through The Bulletin, a print publication that goes to all of our members, as well as through emails, social media, and other communications channels.

"This bill, if passed in its current form, will disproportionately hurt older adults between the ages of 50 and 64 by dramatically increasing insurance premiums to unaffordable rates. Allowing insurance companies to charge older adults an Age Tax 5 times or more than others for health insurance, and reducing tax credits to help pay for it, is quite simply unfair.

"AARP is also concerned that this bill weakens the fiscal sustainability of Medicare, reduces cost-sharing help for out-of-pocket costs for 50- to 64-year-olds purchasing coverage on the individual insurance market, increases the number of uninsured Americans, and puts at risk the health and well-being of millions of poor seniors and disabled adults and children by capping funding for much needed services that allow individuals to live independently in their homes and communities.

"We are also profoundly disappointed that the big drug and insurance companies were given sweetheart deals while nothing was done to lower the cost of health care or prescriptions. Congress must do more to bring down the unsustainably high health care and prescription drug costs for consumers and taxpayers."

It's starting to get Real for a lot of people ...

If Obama had done his job right, it would not be necessary to roll back the present mess. But it has been well know for a long, long time that we were paying an awful lot for health care.

AARP is just as liberal as the ACLU. But they are right about one thing. Replacing Obamacare is another fiasco in the making. Repeal it and move on.

AARP is a radically liberal organization. That in of itself discredits anything they have to say.

This is how the can gets kicked down the road.

It's starting to get Real for a lot of people ...

So you really believe Seniors are the ones participating in ACA? Do you understand Medicare and why is Medicare even part of ACA? what weakened SS and Medicare were politicians and bureaucrats using the SS and Medicare funds in the past to fund the operating expenses of the US

https://www.ssa.gov/history/BudgetTreatment.html

In early 1968 President Lyndon Johnson made a change in the budget presentation by including Social Security and all other trust funds in a"unified budget." This is likewise sometimes described by saying that Social Security was placed "on-budget."

Now what the left wants to point to is the supposed Clinton surplus but this new accounting system allowed the public debt to approach a balanced budget but the TOTAL debt with SS and Medicare created the 1.4 trillion debt Clinton added to the debt

One way to estimate the immediate impact of this accounting change is to look at the government's actual expenditures for FY 1969. Under the current unified budget rules, the government reported a surplus of $3.2 billion for FY 1969. Removing the "off-budget" items from the calculation would result in a net deficit of $507 million.

AARP made a lot of money off Obamacare. Of course they are anti-government-not-giving-them-an-advantage.

If the AARP was actually dedicated to helping Seniors, they would be advocates for entitlement reform, instead of the current one-day-we-screw-over-seniors plan they defend.

For any large institution, it eventually becomes about the institution :(

It's starting to get Real for a lot of people ...

As opposed to pissing off 50 million who already voted for this change? Yes. The rest of us have to live with govt healthcare for another 20-80 years.

Not for nothing, but seniors are the richest demographic in the country, as well as the largest consumers of health services.

If Obama had done his job right, it would not be necessary to roll back the present mess. But it has been well know for a long, long time that we were paying an awful lot for health care.

It's sad to hear the right complain about Obamacare when they did everything they possibly could to hamper it, at every level of government.

How are seniors living independently when they're using a government program?

independently-

1. not influenced or controlled by others in matters of opinion, conduct, etc.; thinking or acting for oneself:
2. not subject to another's authority or jurisdiction; autonomous; free:
3. not influenced by the thought or action of others:
4. not dependent; not depending or contingent upon something else for existence, operation, etc.
5. not relying on another or others for aid or support.
6. rejecting others' aid or support; refusing to be under obligation to others.
7.possessing a competency

AARP is just as liberal as the ACLU. But they are right about one thing. Replacing Obamacare is another fiasco in the making. Repeal it and move on.
Move on, don't ask me to pay for your $1mm hospital bill then. Good luck on cheap policies that have me paying for your carastrophic illness. Take your pick, my daughter says it saved so many of her employees lives.
While the USA is so competition stupid we will never have reasonable health care. Drug and insurance companies are in it for the money, period.
Isn't that obvious? You really think competition lowers costs?

Keep the gov out of my medicare as the trump voter said.
There's no hope.

Isnt that basic economics? Which is based on thousands of years of evidence. More demand, more supply, lower prices.

Makes me wonder who you people have left that you do find credible other than Sean Hannity and Rush Limpjaw.

It's starting to get Real for a lot of people ...

It got real for the people AARP pretends to represent long ago.

How the AARP Made $2.8 Billion By Supporting Obamacare's Cuts to Medicare

It’s one of the reasons why seniors are more opposed to the new health law than any other age group. So why is it that the group that purports to speak for seniors, the American Association of Retired Persons, so strongly supports a law that most seniors oppose?

The AARP is fading into the sunset as it's mission and principles revealed themselves.

I'm betting they'll be around longer than you or me.

The people who represents you in Washington are doing just fine with their Government Healthcare, always have been.

Even the uneducated are starting to realize that.

Theyre rich enough to get whatever care they want. The rest of us would like to at least be able to use our wages to get what we want too, instead of what they decide to allow us.

How'd that work out for you?

Repeal it, throw 20mm people off, give people cheap policies that cover zero and move on. Die people, die. Anyone who think insurance completion will improve things are dreaming
