"Democrats lost over 1,000 seats under Obama."

When I see this statement on the forum, I can only feel a sense of pity for the historical ignorance of the person making it. Trump screamed about how our elections are rigged and I would say he is wrong. What is really rigged are the voters.

Brian Litwin: The GOP's plot to acquire an unbreakable House majority - Longmont Times-Call

As provided in the Constitution, every state redraws all of its district lines every 10 years, after the census. That means that elections in "zero years" matter more than others. This is where our story begins.
Chris Jankowski — who was one of the leading tacticians of the Republican State Leadership Committee (RSLC) and brainchild of what came to be known as Redistricting Majority Project (REDMAP) — had a brilliant idea, an idea that would come to reshape the course of our history. He realized that Republicans should mount an aggressive campaign to flip state legislatures ahead of post-census redistricting, then press the advantage to both redraw congressional and state legislative lines in their favor. Presidents almost always lose seats in a mid-term election. Democratic turnout always falls in non-presidential years. Control redistricting and you control Congress.

On a state level, the election of 2010 was the biggest rout in modern history. Republicans gained almost 700 seats nationwide, surpassing the 628 Democrats grabbed post-Watergate in 1974. After election day 2010, the Republicans could draw 193 House seats on their own. A party needs only 218 seats to control Congress. REDMAP helped to lock in control of half of Congress until at least 2020. Some of the traditionally blue/purple states Republicans took in 2010 were Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Florida, just to name a few.

GOP REDMAP Memo Admits Gerrymandering To Thank For Congressional Election Success | The Huffington Post

The report — drafted as a summary of the importance of the RSLC’s Redistricting Majority Project (REDMAP) — serves as a breakdown of the broader GOP plan to take control of state legislatures, giving Republicans free rein to mount an aggressive gerrymandering campaign that allowed the party to keep a House majority, despite getting fewer votes in those races overall.
“The rationale was straightforward,” reads the memo. “Controlling the redistricting process in these states would have the greatest impact on determining how both state legislative and congressional district boundaries would be drawn. Drawing new district lines in states with the most redistricting activity presented the opportunity to solidify conservative policymaking at the state level and maintain a Republican stronghold in the U.S. House of Representatives for the next decade.”

So this why we resist. Not because Trump or the GOP won but how they won. They cheated. Their voters could care less and that should tell you something about who many of them are. So I call for an escalation of resistance. If there isn't to be a fair and representative system then why should we respect the system? The system only works if we agree to abide by it and so maybe it is time we disrupt it since the cheaters will never acknowledge the steps they have taken to exploit and undermine the system so they can control it to their own ends.

I remember republicans use of bitch about it when the democrats use to have the same gerrymandered advantage.

What do you propose is done as a solution?

Maybe Democrats should just start running as Moderate Republicans...which would eliminate the two party system and force politicians to run on the issues. Just a thought.

There would be zero accountability if everyone agreed on everything. Everyone in the NDSAP agreed on everything; so did the politburo in The Soviet Union. Look how that turned out.

Gerrymandering has been going on by both sides for 200+ years. Why do you call it cheating now?

I don't think he is saying for them to agree with everything but to destroy the two party system and people vote not for a party but on the issues that person represents.

Lol..The Senate isnt gerrymandered , and neither are Governor races. The Democrats lost 14 Governors over the last 6 years.Trump aslo flipped 6 Blue States and won 30 overall in rhe general.

I feel a sense of pity for forum members who would rather delude themselves into believing Gerrymandering and GOP cheating were the cause of the Democrats staggering losses over the last 6 years and not Obama's disastrous agenda.

Its a agenda thats been rejected thoroughly since the 2010 midterms and thats left the Democratic party gutted and leaderless so Im all for you people not learning a damn thing from the last 6 years
It pretty much guarantees a big GOP win in 2018.

I'm not saying they have to agree on everything. There's a lot of moderate Republicans who don't agree with the current GOP platform ...and with the direction the GOP is currently going...they seem to have a lot more in common with Blue Dog and moderate Democrats than they do the teaparty Trump/Bannon wing of the party. And since Dems don't stand a chance running as a democrat in many of those gerrymandered districts, they might as well join forces with moderate republicans and run as moderate republicans. As you know...it wouldn't be the first time people switched parties.

The tea party is going to go out the same way they came in....on the outrage over ACA...except this time it will the AHCA. The GOP is already losing Kentucky.

From the looks of it that is what happens in Massachusetts. Well Democrats anywhere else running as moderate Republicans. A one-party system would be even worse though.

Appealing to greed and hatred has also been a winner for the GOP and for Trump. They have made a killing telling the masses that they want them to "keep more of what they earn" not mentioning that it also applies to their bosses who will stiff them on their wages so they can get a summer home in the South of France. They will realize they were duped someday, hopefully before they are all thrown out on the street.

If they constantly disagree they'll eventually splinter off into seperate parties, whichbis a good thing.

And, I'm saying that the one party system hasn't had very many positive outcomes. North Korea is a one party system.

As someone else already mentioned, how do you explain the loss of governorships and the senate majority? Not to mention local municipalities.

Now it is done with clinical precision on a street by street basis with digital data that people could never have even conceived of using before and which is extremely accurate at predicting political leanings.

If you had actually reviewed the sources of this thread you would know this had been addressed. The GOP channelled literally hundreds of millions of dollars into those elections, often from outside those states, purely to fulfill the goal of gerrymandering and locking in the House of a Representatives. That was a concerted, organized effort to cheat because they could not do it legitimately with voter numbers, they decided to pick voter locations.

I pity people who comment without knowing what they are commenting about.

Dems were not as smart. What's the name of that organization again that writes state laws verbatim?

I don't call it cheating but the repubs are so much better at it. And as someone says, this is sophisticated 2017. ALEC is writing state laws ALEC Exposed.
And cross check wiped out a few hundred thousand voters. Including my son, someone in the next county with the same name.
I forget the cross check reporter who said the election was a forgone conclusion before it started
