The House Republican bill to replace the Affordable Care Act (ACA) would allow insurers to charge older workers health insurance premiums five times as much as younger ones and give states the option to set their own ratio, according to published reports.
Under the ACA, also known as Obamacare, plans can charge their oldest customers only three times the prices charged to the youngest ones.

The current ratio is 3 so that's higher costs right off the bat for older americans. And without the mandate, fewer people will sign up. That too will drive up premiums. complaining about "higher premiums” was an official conservative narrative. Oddly conservatives ignored the republican efforts to drive up premiums: sabotaging the risk corridor program, not expanding Medicaid and encouraging people to not sign up.

Well at least republicans will keep the Medicaid expansion. That’ll help restrain premium growth.

Is this bad? What is more disturbing is that Medicare doesn't seem to be being phased out.

The current plan is to shift the cost of more of the Medicaid expansion to the states. Needless to say, many governors (particularly the Republican ones) are pretty pissed off about this.

That said, we should keep in mind there are other forces pushing older Americans to keep working -- and in general, that's a good thing for GDP.

IMO the better way to phrase this is: "The new Republican plan will likely increase premiums for older Americans."

was there a limit before Obamacare? that's a big jump even with the additional tax credit for over 60's

I think the Medicaid should be pushed to the states. The people living in the states where it isn't as high will make out. It will hurt New York aka The Welfare State.

Older Americans have been postponing retirement for quite a while. I thought liberals enjoyed the status quo.

I won't be postponing my retirement because I retired in 2005.

Looks like the House healthcare bill is dead in the water....RIP.

Vern, in post after post, you have repeatedly helped me, and maybe many others as well, grasp what I call a Macro View of the benefits of Obamacare. On a Micro Level, I can happily gush about the Silver Plan that covers my wife and I. If this New Proposed Plan somehow passed with no more than minor adjustment, even with the Tax Credit and paying three times as much in premiums, I would expect no more than Catastrophic Coverage for my wife and I.
With Trump's loose cannon nature, formidable Conservative, DEM and Independent opposition in Congress, absence of CBO analysis, and people in the public like you and me against it , I anticipate a tough row to hoe ahead for this latest New Plan and no way no how does Repeal and Replacement occur by Easter Sunday, April 16th. If we have truly become the Greatest and Richest Nation on Earth, I would hope most of us could reach agreement to make affordable, high quality healthcare for any American that wants it a reality. Thank you for your outstanding contributions to this ongoing healthcare debate!

Great idea, just put all seniors on the private insurance market when they retire where they will be practically uninsurable. What do you reckon health insurance would be from BCBS for a 70 year old with the typical health issues someone that age has? I doubt 25k to 35k a year in premiums would be an exaggeration at all, and every year they would go up. 12k a year in premiums is typical for someone that is just 60 years old.

The reason why Medicare is so expensive to the government is not that it wasteful and inefficient, its that seniors are extremely expensive to cover.

So seniors, a group who disproportionately support Republicans, might get hurt by Republican policies? Gee, that's too bad. Payback's a bitch.

Note: I do personally know some seniors who do not vote Republican, and I do feel sorry for them. But not the rest of the lot.

I understand there will be plenty of coal mining jobs available to them if they need additional income to pay for TrumpCare/RyanCare in their later years.

thanks. Its just a GD shame that conservatives refuse to see the benefits of Obamacare out of some deluded loyalty to liars. If conservatives weren't do blinded by the non-stop lies we could be having constructive talks to improve Obamacare. There is simply no plan that will lower costs to consumers and the govt. And it looks like the republican plan will do neither.

Typical. I've paid into these systems all my life, and now these idiots are going to start charging me huge increases.

False argument, as you well know. This type of measure requires decades to phase in and well thought through and understandable rules. Saying thingy like "Great idea, just put all seniors on the private insurance market when they retire where they will be practically uninsurable." is just so much populist mush.

You believe in other forms of magic or just the magical notion that the private could ever profitably insure seniors at a cost that any of them could afford?
