Do you guys find it funny or scary that since Trump started calling any news outlet that is critical of him "fake news" that many of his supporters on this forum have begun to do the same?

Ironic. Considering Trump headed the birther movement and created a ton of fake news around that.

It'd be funny if Trump wasn't calling the press the "enemy of the people." That's the stuff of 3rd world strongmen.

I'm glad to have that handle for it. Actually, though, while some of it IS no doubt false, a fair percentage would be better described as a mischaracterization. Some more grossly mischaracterized than others.

Yup. What's that saying about stones in glass houses?

It's funny and scary. Kinda like Orwell's writing.

It's scary but I try to laugh about it, too. Only way to keep one's sanity.

That no doubt has always been true. A little OT, but Trump is the first POTUS to call large parts of the press (basically anyone who doesn't stroke him) enemies of the American people. THAT is what's beyond the pale. The fake news stuff, I just laugh off. Limbaugh has been calling it out while purveying it himself for decades. "drive by"

Trump's demonization of the media is a cynical political ploy. But this only raises the question of why this anti-media position should be politically advantageous? Why is journalism one of the least trusted professions among Americans, vying with Congress, prostitutes, and used car salesmen for the bottom of the rankings? Absolutely no self-reflection from the media has followed the election of Trump, only an orgy of self-righteousness and blame-shifting (Putin spread fake news! Or else it was Zuckerberg.).

President Trump is a motor-mouth, and he tends to speak in a strange, garbled way. He frequently lies. But that doesn't mean everything he says is untrue. And yet, the media often interprets his comments literally so that they seem untrue and fantastical, even when reading them in context shows that what Trump means is something much less outrageous, or at least different.

This isn't rocket science. It's about basic reading comprehension, and the basics of journalism. We're getting the easy cases wrong. Let's step it up.
The media should stop playing dumb about Trump

That is my answer.

If someone mischaracterised Trump as being ineligible for president because he wasn't born in the US, would that be fake news?

They made themselves enemy of the people ot refusing to do their jobs and by refusing to honor the results of an election.

If they dont like getting called out they always have the option of at least trying to DO THE RIGHT THING.

TRUMP IS RIGHT!

The made themselves enemy of the people ot refusing to do their jobs and by refusing to honor the results of an election.

Most of the MSM has accepted the results of the election, even if begrudgingly.

If Trump cares so much about truth in media then why does he seem to be close pals with Alex Jones?

How could they when Trump himself said the election was rigged. Or was that just Trump spreading fake news again?

So was what was presented by Fox/Breitbart/WND about Obama and Clinton but somehow they avoided calling out those media outlets as the enemy of the American people. Could you imagine how people would have reacted had they tried to and meant it like Trump does? We are reaching a point that is beyond parallels and that is why my vote is it is scary.

What surprises me more is that that fact of selective or biased information went uncommented so long. It is true that the problem was more prevalent in Europe and other countries than in the US. But it had become pretty bad by Obama's reelection and should have been more widely noticet at that time.

Yeah, but it swung both ways. The polarization reflected what was happening in the country. It also doesn't delegitimize the media, it just means people have to practice more prudence in discerning what is not said or how it is presented. But most of what is reported is still grounded in facts.

That is quite right. The msm seem to have begun to come to terms with the results of yhe election. What has not happened is a reversion to separating opinon and information.

I thought he said fake NEWS was the enemy of the American people. In fact, he DID say fake news, didn't he? Yes, don't bother looking it up. His first reference at CPAC spelled out fake news. But then he mis-spoke.

Those who wanted someone who very rarely mis-speak, rarely talks off the cuff and parses every syllable should have worked harder for Hillary Clinton.

I find it amusing in one way and scary in many ways that so many media outlets are so incredibly biased in their coverage.

We don't have a news outlet that can be counted on for straight news.

Every large city has an outlet that everyone goes to in times of peril like a very bad storm.

In a nation this size, that we are lacking such an outlet is a shame.

It seems like one of the also ran outlets like MSNBC might want to try this tact out. It sure couldn't reduce their audiences any more than they already are. I think right now the biggest part of their measured audience is when people pass out in front of the screen and their thumb reflexively clicks to bring the box to their channel.

The folks in Hollywood say that family movies are not money makers and yet that always seem to make money.

If there was a straight shooter news network, I'd watch it.

So when Trump was doing exactly that only 5 years ago to Obama, was fake news such a major issue?

I don't CARE what Trump said about Obama. In fact, how many credible newspapers REPORTED he was ineligible to be president? That's what we're talking about here. What NEWSPAPERS report. You should have quit while you were ahead.

I care what the PRESS says to me. Their hyperbolic headlines, perjorative in nature are poisoning the well. Their nonstories that look at everything through "the ugly lens" influence people. We here are the exception. Most of us anyway don't fall for that ****. But the rest of society? Sorry to say far too many of them do.

Of course "fake news" is the enemy. Because everything that is reported of him that is critical they DEFINE as "Fake news". They have even admitted it.

WH official: We'll say 'fake news' until media realizes attitude of attacking the president is wrong - CNNPolitics.com

Sebastian Gorka, deputy assistant to President Donald Trump, said Monday that the administration will continue using the term "fake news" until the media understands that their "monumental desire" to attack the President is wrong.

"There is a monumental desire on behalf of the majority of the media, not just the pollsters, the majority of the media to attack a duly elected President in the second week of his term," Gorka, a former Breitbart editor who also holds a PhD in political science, told syndicated conservative radio host Michael Medved.
"That's how unhealthy the situation is and until the media understands how wrong that attitude is, and how it hurts their credibility, we are going to continue to say, 'fake news.' I'm sorry, Michael. That's the reality," he added.

Translation: You are critical of the president and we will call you fake news regardless of whether or not what you are reporting is true.
