There's two things to remember:

1) Dumping Trump was almost entirely a fantasy. We knew it was very hard to imagine Trump getting knocked off at the Convention, but it was still possible. Doing it this weekend or next week is just a logistical nightmare.

2) Most of the base wanted Trump to stay. This could have partly been for stability's sake or it could have been because a large chunk of the base specifically wants Donald Trump to be the nominee, but it was very undeniable what was taking place. The aggregate response from GOP Senators, Representatives, and Governors was (essentially) as follows: "it was a terrible comment, and he must apologize and show us he is better than that." That was in the heat of the moment, a day or two before the debate.

Now: Consider his debate performance. Was it bad? Yes. Was it catastrophic? No. He, at his worst, nearly held even from the last performance. Lacking a total Trump implosion, the GOP brass would lose whatever momentum they needed to even embark on something as dramatic as replacing at least half of the ticket. With Pence's public display of support after tonight's debate, this ship keeps going.

What the RNC will need to do is give people a lot of flexibility in how they handle Trump and throw lavish amounts of dollars their way, because it ain't going to Trump. Here's the weird thing. Trump loves money and it's the basis of his appeal. But it, by itself, is having far less impact than we would come to expect (perhaps flying in the face of what we ought to supposedly experience in a post-Citizens United America). With so little ground game, so few mega donors behind him, no personal expenditures, this man is going to nail 42-45% of the popular vote for President of the United States and, at times in this cycle even or ahead of Clinton in the nation's polls.

Is the RNC looking at a November defeat? Probably. But what they are really starting to get nervous about is a somewhat respectable loss and the big fight that comes with that.

Did Trump do enough to stop the sinking ship?? Doesn't look like it. This is NOT over Trumpkins.

Nonevent. They will discuss how to best manage their own campaigns. Nobody's dumping Trump. They can't. What don't people understand about this? People have voted. They could pull all financial support, but basically? The GOP made its bed months ago. Nighty-night.

Most people vote straight ballots. I doubt they'll even suggest not voting for him...although for how many mistakes the GOP has made lately, I suppose it wouldn't surprise me. But it would backfire.

Paul Ryan just told House GOP members that he will not be campaigning with Trump anymore will focus on retaining House Majority. Tells members should make a judgment call for their own districts. https://mic.com/articles/156405/pau...t-still-supports-him-for-president#.IMaE8afbU

This on top of the other meeting scheduled tonight...

Mike Pence still on board, still stands with Trump. rumors were false: Mike Pence: I never considered leaving Trump ticket - CNNPolitics.com

Wow! PAUL RYAN?? And he was such a strong supporter. Holy moly. (Sarcasm, btw)

At this point it feels like the Trump toadies can only dump more garbage on the dumpster fire that is his campaign.
