Times Editor Confirms Change in Approach

On Tuesday, we noted an apparent shift in gears in the New York Times' coverage of Donald Trump, from a more dispassionate approach to a more critical approach. On Wednesday, executive editor Dean Baquet confirmed that this is the case, telling Quartz that:

I think our investigative work—see the [Sept. 17] story on Trump's tax breaks—has always been hard hitting. But we have decided to be more direct in calling things out when a candidate actually lies. The birther issue represents, well, outright lying. And he lied over a long period. It is a real word and we will use it when warranted.

For the people who would not care if Donald Trump shot someone on Fifth Avenue, this will not matter. For the independents and the fence-sitters, on the other hand, more critical media coverage could certainly help them make up their minds as the contest reaches its conclusion. (Z)

You mean the NYT hasn't been biased enough so they're going into overdrive.

Please stop with the "I'm a victim excuse" the MSM is bias and that why we always lose and look like fools argument......

Please try and invent a new thing/person/group of boogiemen you can blame as biased and unfair to yall..........

I have been listening to the MSM thing from yall for over 50 years......... and it has become annoying

Are they going to call out Hillary's lies too? Probably not considering they flat out admit to wanting to influence the election. And people wonder why folks trust the media less and less.

Good grief, they pretty admit that they hope to influence the election in Hillary's favor and you're still all, naw no media bias here. Lol.

I would not expect the NYT's to manage to be better than this after what they have shown us the last 20.

It used to be a great paper, long time ago.

Wanted to be GREAT.

SAD!

Many folks think differently...... It still remains the newspaper of record for the US......

That must count for something.......

And thanks for sharing

Wow, didn't think the NYT could turn into more of a hack rag than it already is.

Actually, there are two fishwraps of record; the other is WaPo. And you need look no further than the old gray two-bit whore's overt, shameless bias in the 2004 election to see why the NY Times has so little respect (except for arts and letters).

Because it worked so good for CNN.
MSNBC Overtakes CNN as Fox News Dominates Primetime Cable News Ratings
CNN averaged 752,000 viewers in primetime, its lowest weekly primetime average since the week of Jan. 18 while MSNBC averaged 775,000. MSNBC has now topped CNN in viewers in nine out of the last 14 days in primetime, including the day of the EgyptAir plane disappearance.

Good on them. I hope they keep it up so they can not learn the same lesson CNN isn't learning.

WHoah! This is SHOCKING! Who knew!!!

Next thing you know CNN is going to admit they are in the bag for the rat party.

I hear a lot of folks say that.............

And sometimes ask 3 questions......
Yet when asked why they say so.........

Or can prove so......

I never get a reply saying they say the papers are liberal.....

Or any "proof" supporting so.........

And the 3rd question is............

Even if liberal what matter does it make?

I love the NY Times. I don't understand why they think they need to change their writing style toward Trump or anyone, I never read it anyhow. I love the Times because it fits the bird cage perfectly, is very absorbent, and the Sunday edition provides enough paper to my bird cages for the week.

The long and short of it is..........the media following the lead of the NYT's will be doing "fact checking" and when a candidate wrong/lies/misstated/makes up/ spin the facts the media will take him/her to account.......

Thus returning to the way journalism once was.......I think that's wonderful

Charming....... but rather expensive..........May I suggest the Washington Times.........it is but one sheet......printed only on one side ......and it's free

The birds only get the best, after all the NYT IS the paper of record.

Are you talking about where the NYT's executive editor, Bill Keller, capitulated to pressure from the President Bush 2 administration to not publish the NSA story, helping to secure the republican re-election ?

Oh no, a news media agency is going to point out when a candidate dead-to-rights lies, that is so unfair! Its a terrible bias to point out when Trump contradicts himself and what he's said. Truth doesn't matter, facts are biased, waaaaah, waaaaaah!

The NYT is known to be bias. Also, change your political lean.

I wish my wife would let me have a bird. I want a pet crow or raven or one of those giant parrots that live for decades.

I love birds, corvids included. I even rehabilitated a wounded feral duck once.
