Obama speaking to journalists of Trump v Clinton:
"The bottom line," Obama said at the conclusion of this riff, "is that we cannot afford to suddenly treat this like a reality show. We can't afford to act as if there's some equivalence here."
President Obama: the media is completely failing to hold Donald Trump to account - Vox

The job of the journalist is to report the truth, it is not to assign value to the truth, that is for the people to decide.

The same guy who is always sure that he is the smartest guy in any room is actually really pretty stupid.

To the elitists, the truth is whatever the editor is told to print, and the talking heads to say.

The faces may change as the years go by, but not the agenda.

I know that but consider where we are when a sitting President out in the open calls for such a massive violation of journalism standards.

And yet so many still cant figure out why Trump is here.

One can criticize the media without being in violation of the first amendment. Even a president.

Yes that is true, but what he says the journalists should do they very certainly should not do, THAT is what makes Obama wrong.

Obama is either an abuser of democracy or grossly ignorant or both....which one is it?

And so you're saying that "reality shows" are real journalism and our election process should look like The Apprentice or Big Brother? On what planet are reality shows "the truth"?

BO is stupid? I'd guess that isn't the right word. Misguided or ideological, maybe? Those traits lead to stupidity, though. Look at progressives' immigration policy, for example.

Thinks we're stupid.

Uh, what?

If a candidate says something demonstrably false - not a position, but a factual statement - a journalist would fail in his job if he failed to report the fact that demonstrates the statement false.

Trump just wants to be able to lie out of both corners of his *** without anyone calling him on it. If they do, he cries about "disgusting bias".

Umm.....nnnooooo, Obama is not wrong for stating what he thinks the media should and shouldn't do. That's his own first amendment right.

Obama didn't claim that the job of the media is to 'assign value to the truth'.

I'd suggest actually reading what you link to before linking it.

Save your false indignation.

A journalist assigns value by choosing or passing to report individual stories.

A journalist's only job is to make money for his employer.

Well, us common folk are just stupid to make up our own minds. We need to be spoon fed the opinion that he wants us to have so we can agree with him cuz we r so dum.

The press is supposed to be a cross check. They fail on a regular basis. The majority of the press tries to feed us their version of the truth but it isn't working.
American trust in news media falls to lowest level in history: Gallup poll - Washington Times
A major pollster has some stark news: “Americans’ trust and confidence in the mass media ‘to report the news fully, accurately and fairly’ has dropped to its lowest level in Gallup polling history, with 32 percent saying they have a great deal or fair amount of trust in the media. This is down eight percentage points from last year,” writes Art Swift, an analyst for the Gallup poll, which first asked the nation to weigh in on the press in 1972.

“Over the history of the entire trend, Americans’ trust and confidence hit its highest point in 1976, at 72 percent, in the wake of widely lauded examples of investigative journalism regarding Vietnam and the Watergate scandal,” Mr. Swift said.

What we have now is the exact opposite of what we had in 1976.

The press is supposed to illuminate reality, they are not supposed to be in charge of molding the opinions of the people, they are not supposed to be propagandizers for the elite class, but after several wrong turns by them this is where we are today.

Anyone who calls Obama a moron can't be that bright himself.

Anyway, a journalist job is not to report the truth.

Obama has not made many right calls, the moron tab is well earned, and since a reporters job is NOT to report truth in your estimation what then are they supposed to report?

He's saying they're NOT reporting truth by treating Trump the way they're treating him...

How do you get that out of these words:

I didn't get that from those words, i don't know where you pulled those words from.

What i'm saying is that President Obama is calling out the media for NOT reporting the truth. They are creating a false equivalency. They are doing this for viewership. If Clinton is portrayed as sane and Trump is portrayed as insane, then people will tune out and vote for Clinton.

There is no false equivalency, there is equivalency. Trump and Clinton are equals, they have won the nomination of their parties, and we are a two party system. Obama is upset that he is not seeing his opinion messaged as much as he wants, but it is not opinions on the facts that journalists trade in, it is facts. Yes those facts can and often should be put into some kind of context, but "Trump sucks" is not context, it is one persons opinion on the nature of the facts. Neither is "Trump is not as good as Clinton".

In some ways, they are equivalent. In other ways, they are not.

For example, Hillary and her charity are more transparent than Trump and his charity. It was explained in your link why that is.

Then you report that if there is proof that the conclusion is correct. You say "Hillary does XYZ but Trump does not", but calling one Transparent and the other not is a conclusion from the facts it is not the facts, and a journalist is supposed to report the facts, not their conclusions unless they are universal, and not Obama's conclusion of the facts. Does everyone agree that the Trump foundation is less transparent? I dont think so, so then it is not a fact, it is an opinion.

Truth is too heavy a burden. You won't find "telling the truth" in any definition of a journalist. News journalists report facts of events. A central truth about Trump is he is a liar of the pathological kind, as compared to the strategic kind that Hillary has been associated with. Another central truth about Trump is that something is deeply wrong with him as revealed by the incessant boasting, the evident need of constant attention, the lack of restraint that allows him to talk off the top of his head and say anything at all no matter how outrageous. Journalists report facts that show these things and tell the truth, so to speak, insofar but only insofar as they report with accuracy what Trump does and says and also, and this where journalists often have failed, the relevant factual context.

Actually what they tend to do is rationalize their feelings, and say it out loud as if it were journalism, but really it is all about them, that and supporting their tribe. When that happens truth only shows up to support a lie, or by accident.

No, that's not actually what they do, but that's similar to what you do in highlighting a portion of a quote in a way that distorts its meaning.
