California now leads the nation in job creation, projected $1 billion surplus

Yeah, its indicitive of the state of things. Those who think CA's just all doing rosey now that it soaked the millinaires and added sales tax best take their savings and lock and load.

that's your return to the story, and California's debt, and mismanagement.

After 8 years of a failed GOP governor, looks like things are finally starting to turn around in the Golden State under Governor Jerry Brown's leadership. :peace

Yeah through austerity and tax increases...
So he clamped down on spending, cutting university budgets, holding K-12 education to the minimum and slashing health and social service programs. And he gathered signatures for a ballot initiative to raise income taxes on the wealthy and increase the sales tax by a quarter-cent on the dollar
Maybe Washington should take note…Unfortunately this is a PROJECTED surplus much the same as CBO predicted in the late ‘90’s (we know how that worked out)…AND is dependent on the tax increases generating the PROJECTED revenue…
The state is still looking at a very real deficit in the coming year, and projections of surpluses on the horizon, while more realistic than ever before, remain little more than the best educated guesses of the people who are paid to peer into economic crystal balls.

Crystal ball indeed…:lamo

Schwarzenegger did blow it no doubt. Californians elected a movie star, what did they expect?
However you mentioned more than just Schwarzenegger. What for instance, did Clinton fix, that Reagan caused?

p.s. I think its funny that you find it insulting for me to say you went to public school!

Uhhh, you do realize that Reagan's inept policies resulted in the Bush 1 recession, which Clinton solved by raising taxes on the top bracket.

Reagan also left the Iraqi mess, having armed Saddam (amazing how many criminals Reagan armed), and Clinton fixed that with sanctions and air strikes. Then Bush II arived and spent $3T to kill Reagan's creation and let Iran take over the region, another country Reagan armed! And of course 9-11 was in the wings, fueled by jihadist in Afghanistan, amazingly also armed by Reagan.

your a funny guy, for having such faith is california.

my state is pulling in business from California as business leaves to get away for high taxes, CA EPA, the cities which are broke.

As More Cities Go Broke, Is Muni Crisis Finally Here?

Wow, a city in California went broke. If that keeps happening, we'll be in as bad of shape as Alabama -- in 30,000 years.

Which US state has the highest GDP by far? Come on, you can say it!

Can't rebut the facts, so you insult.

Schwarzenegger blew it.

I remember how the GOP practically treated Schwarzenegger as a messiah, just like they treated George W. Bush.

Now that they have ended up as abject failures, conservatives now throw them under the bus, completely disowning them and calling them "liberal Democrats", or some other such teabagger nonsense.

With Clinton it "was the economy, stupid" Don't you remember the campaign? Bush 1 burned up all of Reagans "stimulus spending" and we went into recession. Just like every Republican President before and after. Republicans and recessions are like 2 peas in a pod.

Depends where you are. Those of us in the Bay Area are in pretty good shape. Hell, when I was talking to my mom over Thanksgiving, she told me she'd just found out that her house had appreciated in value by about 40% in the last six months.

If its appreaciating that fast thats bad news. I would suggest that she double check it. If its appreaciating that fast then there is probabley something seriously hinky going on. I would be very wary. Central Valley is having problems right now. So too is Southern California.

Frisco bay property is not cheap at all. Plus 40% thats a HUGE move. 40% sounds like somebodies trying to do what they did here Bakersfield. Look up the Crisp and Cole. They almost single handedly bumped the market in real estate up out here. Then it got dumped because the prices couldnt be sustained. A lot of malfiecence and fraud going on.

Its not hard to reflect a 40% increase in housing value. That is what happens when a beat up POS that was trashed by the people who should have never gotten a $300k 95% Loan to Equity Loan leave in a pile of heap; they blame the lender and tear anything of value they can out of the walls and leave the rubble behind to be sold at $100k. Three years later a rehab company finally gets around to new carpet, paint, and landscape plus repairs and sales it for $140k and liberal say look....I gained 40% equity thanks to the neighbors.

BTW I'm living in a formerly $300k home in the CV of CA that I bought for $129 almost 2 years ago and my neighors got theirs for 30k less this past summer, but you should have seen the place - trashed big time - they are fixing it up nice. Anyway I'm reportedly down 30% this year.

Im going to ask a few small questions.

After unfunded pension liabilities to state workers are figured in, where is the state surplus?

Does this surplus include payment of bond debt?

California has three municipalities in bankruptcy, why isnt Brown doing more to get those cities on the right track?

Is state spending now under control or is it being shielded from scrutiny by large tax increases to make spending look palateable?

For all the worry over the central valley and its economic condition, why isnt the problem properly identified? IE turn the water back on.

Why is the high speed rail still going forward with a price tag the state cant possibly afford if the state might, possibly get into the black?

Why not more California interior oil exploration and exploitation? I understand why not on the coast---may not agree, but understand. But the interior?

Trust me, in the area where she lives it actually makes sense. It's not just her house, it's the entire community. Let me put it this way: my brother went to high school with Steve Wasniak's son. There's a LOT of money in the area. This kind of thing is true to a lesser extent all over the Bay Area. The median house price in San Francisco is steadily rising (I think it's at about $800k right now) and the same is true in most of the East and South Bay.

Frisco? Really?

Act like you've been there, man. The only people who use the term Frisco are complete tourists.

I lived there in the 60s and the 80s and that's what natives called SF.

Frisco:
improper way to abbreviate San Francisco and a sure way to let someone know you aren't from there or spent any real time there.

Seriously? People here hate it now. It's either "SF" or "The City."

I am a tourist there.

Avoid saying Frisco. It will make people want to rip you off and/or punch you. :)

Really? I dont hardly ever go there and then its only on business not pleasure. As for their feelings I could care less seeing as they are screwing me 365 days a year and twice on sundays. I know its blunt but its the way I see it. I am not overly fond of San Franciscans. Check out how they do electrical rates in this state in various sections and you will understand why I say that. We tried to do a coop down here. Still trying as a matter of fact. Seems certain municipalities like us subsidzing their electricity.

I was exaggerating for humor value. You should give SF another shot. It's a fantastic city, and I wouldn't want to live anywhere else (except maybe New York).

I will grant you this it is a nice place to visit. Living there for me not so much. San Fran is hell of a lot nicer than New York by the way. Been to both. Hate to say it but San Fran is better. I dont go much, the traffic is absurd during the weekdays. I like the sticks myself. I can run my equipment and no one gets bothered or cares what I am doing.

Both SF and NY have their advantages. I live in SF, and I've visited NY a bunch of times. My thing with New York is that it's insanely expensive. I wouldn't want to live there unless I was making enormous amounts of money.

Hmmm…

I've expressed, several times, my belief that there are two great centers of stupidity in the United States. Lately, it seems that Than Fwanthithco has not often been making the news for its stupidity, but New York—especially New York City, but the whole state as well to a lesser degree—is making a great deal of news for its stupidity.
